Some great vocals and enjoyable soul, but there are a little too many slow jams for my taste.

I like some of these songs, but others are a little too down-tempo for my tastes.

I own plenty of soul records, but I somehow have yet to buy any Nina Simone. Should really rectify that. This would be a good one to start with, since it has some of her best performances. I can understand how her husky voice is not for everyone, but I admire how raw and commanding she sounds. Not every song is a banger, and some parts drag, but this is still damn fine stuff. B

Very calming and Their voice was soothing. Not sure if I’d listen to it again but was a decent album overall

Nina Simone has such a great characteristic voice for jazz. I'm only familiar with a few of her songs, so this entire album was new to me. Most of these songs were decent, though not many of them really stuck with me. This slow, vocal jazz style is something I enjoy putting on in the background but not always actively listening to.

Simone’s utterly fascinating vocals had me completely ignoring the instrumentals, which, on subsequent listens really came to fruition as a powerful complement. The soft touch of the keys behind her vibrato on “If I Should Lose You” into the climax is *chefs kiss*. Combined with Simone’s interesting lyrics? We got a stew goin’ here… The arrangements are also really great, from the orchestral to the jazzy to the pop, Wild is the Wind resides in an interesting overlap of styles without feeling incoherent or lacking. 4

I listened through this twice and there are nice songs and some that are not so great for me. I think overall, it was a good listen, but not necessarily something I'd come back to. Sorry, Nina. 3/5
