The Blueprint
JAY ZI’m not sure how Jay Z got to be a billionaire. The production is pretty great tho.

Well written and executed. Cohesive as a concept. It also had a considerable calming effect on my wife, earning it the coveted fifth star. Congrats Van.
I think even if I heard this is in 1990, I still would have found it extremely tiring. Had a drunk pub karaoke rock vibe. Absolutely could not wait for it to end. ‘Joe 1’ is the only ok track due to it being instrumental.
Listened twice thru. Unless its on the Lethal Weapon soundtrack, I do not particularly enjoy the saxophone. Especially trill sax. And the drum machine can fuck right off. The synths were good but I also don’t like them much. However, the stadium reverb on the bigger drums actually kinda made me smile. A little bit. I never realised ‘Everybody Wants to rule the World’ had the same hook as Billie Jean until today. The standout track is definitely ‘Head Over Heels/Broken’. And not just because I pretend to understand the plot to Donnie Darko... 3 stars.
I only really knew Ms Jackson before this listen. It’s kind of an outlier. Big Boi is good but Andre 3000 is unreal. He’s in my top 5 rappers. A list I admittedly have yet to compile. I liked So Fresh, So Clean. I finally understand what my wife has been singing whenever I have a shower.
Amazed that this is from 1971. Childish Gambino was clearly inspired by this album for ‘Awaken, My Love’ a few years ago. Gonna play this loud in my car quite often in future. Really loved the solo on the title track, the vocals in general, and the Hendrix-inspired guitar on ‘Super Stupid’. And the energy rules.
Man in the Mirror is definitely Ashton’s favourite on this. Happy to hear 80’s bass and drums in Sydney traffic. The Way You Make Me Feel is the standout out of 4 standout tracks. The rest is real real average.
Absolutely not in the right mood for this. Hungover, hot, busy, traffic. The strings were nice and I can see how it would have made an impact in the late 80’s, but it just wasn’t for me today.
The Killing Moon feels like it was recorded by a different band. Which is unfortunate as it is the best song by quite a margin.
Memories of paramedic prac circa 2005, loading a patient into the back of the ambulance at the Green Day concert at Sydney Entertainment Centre. Got to see a little bit live. Those first 3 tracks have somehow aged even better than Billy Joe Armstrong. Add in ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends’ and you’ve got 1/2 of the greatest album of the 2000’s. Pity about the filler tracks which bring it way the fuck back to Earth.
My grandparents used to listen to stuff like this. And it actually took me back to that time. So I’m actually ok with most of this album. ‘Georgia On My Mind’ is pretty darn tootin.

Outstanding.
Raucous. Experimental. Joyful. Melancholy. Some missteps but probably my favourite so far.

Brilliant. Formative. Have always loved the sample genre. Look forward to more listens.
Lemmy sounds like his voice isn’t going to make it to the end of every song. The opening title track is a ripper. Huge energy literally from the first note. But it stays high energy the whole time, and I grew very weary. Do not recommend driving to this album.
Feels like a raw Queens Of The Stone Age at the start, moves into a big David Bowie section, and kinda falls off a cliff at the end. I listened through twice tho. Its aged well.
Absolute dopamine hitter. Chased all the anxiety out of my body.
