Enjoyed Blackstar, Lazarus and Dollar Days. Found some of the other songs a little less enjoyable. It is Bowie so I came into the listen knowing that there were going to be some quirkiness. Probably should be on the list because of influence and last album.
Great Meditation music. The sitar is such a cool instrument and Shankar is the premier Indian musician for 9 decades. You are probably most familiar with his music from The Beatles when they were experimenting in the sixties with middle eastern philosophy.
Down to the Waterline was a solid jam. Water of Love was a great tune. It started to fade a little bit by the time got to track number 5. Sultans of Swing could be back ground music for as many times as I have heard it. Starting this challenge with this album and have already involved in two other podcast. Episode 35 in the 1001 Album Complaints “American Idiot” and Episode 20 1001 Album Club “ Genius of Ray Charles”.
Solid instrumental album. Has a very uplifting vibe for the soul. Could definitely be used for soft dinner party music or while having wine before dinner. Not necessarily a album I going to turn on for a drive or doing housework, but good for cooking, drinking wine and cocktails.
This album has always been my angry goto. Mr Self Destruct is the absolute assault, but in a good way, on your ear drums if you are into listening with headphones. I believe headphones are a must for this generation of music. Piggy is not a bad song but nor is it very memorable. Hersey has the feel of the punk club that Sonny Crocket and Rico Tubbs would walk into at the beginning of a Miami Vice episode. Moving away from that image this is definitely a proclamation that Trent is not a big fan of Christianity. March of the Pigs is a raging mosh pit and I love it! Give me the 90's, a stobe light filled club with girls dancing from cages hanging from the ceiling, a little hit of X and "everything is alright". Closer is just a classic. Enough said. Unfortunately it becomes quite repetitive and only holds three good songs after Closer. Eraser, The Downward Spiral, and Hurt. All this being said I would not say this album is for everybody and probably does not belong on this list. Trent Reznor is talented engineer and musician but totally one sided in his lyrics.
This is first time listen for me. I thought the album was arranged beautifully and studio engineered to perfection. Wasn't necessarily in love with the techno rock rave song but the rest of the album is exceptional. They sound they have musical influences from everybody. I heard Morrisey, The Beach Boys , Pink Floyd and others. Really enjoyed and will be doing a deeper dive on the The Stone Roses.
I just have a problem with "Sad Bastard" music. If it doesn't have a strong blues guitar behind the lyrics then it just sounds whiney as shit. It wasn't for me and I could not tell you if it belongs on the list or not.
This album is has the jams you love and some songs you don't know but are charming.
Live music by great musicians. Has the original feel of the 1978 show as they have not dubbed out the audience. Standard classics like "I Want You To Want Me", jammy jams like "Need Your Love"and rounded out with a book like opening and ending with "Hello There" and Goodnight". Good experience but always listen to my music on Apple Music featuring Apple Digital Master and Lossless Audio and headphones.
It was really good but surprisingly long. "Do Your Thing" is 19:27. WTF! Plus it starts to sound like one continuous album of like 30 musicians who got together and jammed. That may not be a bad thing if you are into 1hr 10 minutes (roughly) of that jam. I wasn't and could think of many more Movie albums that belong on this list then Shaft. Finally Isaac Hayes has much better records out where he actually sings on more then two of the songs.
This album was difficulty to listen too. I can not believe that this album should be on this list or that this band influenced music some how. I thought "Song 2" was an Offspring song. It was the only song I recognized or could understand, but this is not saying much as I though it sucked then and now.
Influential in fashion, music style, and attitude in the 80's. Unfortunately, pass a little nostalgia and a trip down memory lane, the music doesn't hold up. Another record I don't 100% agree with being on this list. I guess better then the FAT BOYS representing the rap portion of this era.
Enjoyed Blackstar, Lazarus and Dollar Days. Found some of the other songs a little less enjoyable. It is Bowie so I came into the listen knowing that there were going to be some quirkiness. Probably should be on the list because of influence and last album.
I remember seeing The Jesus and Mary Chains at Loopaloza 1992. They were a middle of the day act and I believe Ministry came on after them. They had a much more edgier style which makes since with this album being their second release and in the 80's still. I was not in love with the first few songs of this album but started to feel more like the band I saw as we got past song number 10. Not a bad album but I think that out of their whole catalog there may have been a better representation of the band.
This album is raw and truthful. While you can hear that Cube is still a young man, he is a undeniable powerhouse This is not for everybody but for those who are interested in a story, Cube tells one hell of a good one. I enjoy the maturation of Cube as he continues to create and now has an expansive catalog. He is also still putting out new content. This unlike LL Cool J album belongs on this list as do other Cube music.
Love this album when it came out. Their space, cosmic style guitar riffs and melodically drum beats makes many of their songs ear worms. I was happy to see my favorite Coldplay "A Rush of Blood to the Head" is also on the list. It is truly their Opus in my opinion.
Dolly can make a bad story beautiful. She has a upbeat way of going through a bunch of negativity and making it sound like a dream. This album is song bye an angel and does not contain fluff. Most song are under 3 minutes and there should be no excuse not to give this story of poverty, bad love, and being overlooked because your a woman album.
I was not familiar with PJ Harvey work. I had mixed feelings on this album. I liked Happy and Bleeding the most. I would definitely give this album another listen as well as some more of her catalog.
Must start by saying that I am not a big Shoegaze band fan. This album displays on obscene amount of distortion with the common sad bastard lyrics. I do know that drummer was in the wrong band. He is the bright point of this album. If we could strip away all the other instruments and the vocals this would be a much better album. Will not be a listening party involving Ride.
This album sucks. The wanna be models who also want to be singers need to stick to modeling. Firestarter may have been a hit during it time but the whole album sounds like the same song. 1997 had a bunch of what we called industrial rave music. That is this sound but you must be on a fair share of Crystal or X to enjoy the sound. I am too old for that shit therefor this makes for a tough listen.
WHYYYY?!?!? I am really questioning Robert Dimery and has judgment of music. How can Harry Belfonte not be on this entire list. The artist left off for this utter crap is beyond my comprehension. BORK is a joke. The Prodigy is a joke. Blur having three albums on the list is a joke and a crime. His Wiki page said that he worked at Time Out and Vogue. He is from the Untied Kingdom and doesn't have any known musical talent. This book needs a massive overhaul.
First thing that comes to mind is Jon Cryer and Molly Ringwald . Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles kind of music. Very nostalgic. Unfortunately nostalgic doesn't always equate into good. Most of things I was wearing in the eighties I can happily say stayed in the eighties. Most of the album sounds pretty mundane for the eighties sound. Synthesized crap that aged as well as the saxophone solo did. What I have Done To Deserve This? was the only memorable song on the album and left me asking the same question at the end of the listen. What did I do to deserve this?
Fantastic artist!! Enjoyed listening to the re-release on Apple now in Spatial and Dolby Atmos. Slow Burn is a great start to this album and probably one of my favorite songs. Oh,What a World also is Avery cool listen. A neat play on words in Space Cowboy. My wife's favorite Kacey song High Horse is a fun upbeat sounding tune. This album finishes off nicely with Rainbow. A Great listen.
Just not my groove. I am sure this style of music moves some people, it just doesn't do anything for me. It hard to listen too and fells like a chore rather than enjoyment.
So as I was listening to this album I was trying to imagine if you stripped it down and add real instruments what would that bring to the table. By the end of this album I was wondering what the point would be. I have said it before that the synthesizer age of the eighties did not age well. This is how these lads made their music. They were the kings of it. Sucks for them. I hated this album. Beyond the synthesizer, you had better have a good structured song for it to be over four minutes. 7 songs over 4 minutes, 1 over five minutes, 2 at the high end three minute range and just one song under three minutes. Perfect song is 3:30. Anything longer better be damn good.
Eric Clapton is Eric Clapton. A blues man who knows how to make a guitar speak. This album while iconic is still fairly flawed for Clapton. Still recovering from a serious accident and strung out on a drug cocktail, makes this album sloppy in areas. Recorder at an iconic house that I believe the Stones had just got finished recording and suggested to Clapton. Still can't complain about Clapton because even on a bad day he has more talent in his pinkie then most.
Never heard of these guys. Being I late teen at tis time I am surprised that I had not. Definitely my style of rap. They not only reference but have a De La Soul quality about them. Love the little infused sound bites and samples they add with a bit of wit and charm. This album is just flat out COOL! Definitely should be a listen.
Pump is your average late 80's Aerosmith. It has a handful of good songs. The social commentary of Janie's Got a Gun is strong and somewhat a new ay to approach family assaults. It ends up being the most memorable song on the album along with Love In an Elevator. The latter song is kinda of corny and has not aged as well in my opinion. This album is just ok in my book and doesn't necessary deserve a spot in this book.
Great Meditation music. The sitar is such a cool instrument and Shankar is the premier Indian musician for 9 decades. You are probably most familiar with his music from The Beatles when they were experimenting in the sixties with middle eastern philosophy.
This is just one of the albums that didn't age well.1989 was top loaded with crap. Millie Vanilla, New Kids on the Block, Bobby Brown and Obviously Queen Latifah. There is not a good song on this album!
You can tell Mr Hooker is starting to get up there in his age upon release of this album. While he is surround by Allstars , I would not choose this particular album for the list. There are many better in his catalog. I believe this one was a miss. He still gets 3 stars because he is John Lee Hooker.
I get it but I don't get the music. I have just never been a fan of speed any style of music. I can definitely hear the influence in latter bands. I am thinking Linkin Park and Evanescence. I could only sample this album. I just don't care to listen to an entire album of this genre. All that being said, they belong on the list and have more talent then some of the other artist chosen for this book.
The description of this album was perfect. A short is Coles Corner wraps itself in the dreams of Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Scott Walker and Lee Hazelwood. With a baritone perpetually in anguish over broken love, dead love, bittersweet love ( anything other than happy love), Richard Hawley, like Chris Isaak, shifts to past decades without resorting to complete nostalgia. He lets the strings engulf him, the piano sway him, and thee ballads play him. I wish these were my words but they are how I felt about this listen. Perfect for a rainy night or a overcast day.
First time listen, but have heard multiple songs on the radio through my years. I thought The Clash was a punk band. This album does not scream punk to me. I found it a enjoyable listen. Above Average musicians.
Rock Opera. I think that says everything you need to know about the album style. It smoothly moves from one song to another with seamless transition. While I feel Quadrophenia may be their opus, the album has left a long impression on many music fans through the generations.
Love, Love , Love this album. This woman has got the real deal. She is funny, classy and uber talented. Harry Belfonte band is the backing artist on this record which adds to the richness of this album. A true crime that he has been left off this list. Must listen.
They say that Meg White began her musical career on a whim. I believe it! Jack White is a premier mind in funky, bluesy, edgy rock and roll. His sister is a amateur drummer. Unfortunately it hurts the bottom line. I could listen to Jack White strum a guitar all day, but Meg just doesn't offer anything.
Best Beach Boys album. A must have in your vinyl collection. Appreciate the master as it is much more enjoyable in stereo than mono. Brian Wilson Opus with out a doubt. The work that went into PET SOUNDS and amount of studio musicians performing makes this ear cotton candy. It also has the best collection songs of any of their albums. It definitely moves away from what made them popular with that surfer sound, but that needed to be done.
If people really gave a listen to the Monkees they would realize they don't sound like the Beatles at all. They start out with banjo blended in with 60's folk/rock on You Told Me. I'll Spend My Life With You has what sounds like a bath tub Bass, banjo, and slide guitar. The guys harmonize wonderfully together. This being said, they are no Beatles and get a little mundane on this album. I love them growing up but not really influencing music much.
One of the first of many solo albums of Micheal Jackson. Still young, but not a child, this album is able to meld disco, funk , a dash of jazz, and a little early techno. Quite an achievement. While the monster hits are Don't Stop Till You Get Enough and Rock With You, much of the album will not disappoint. Off The Wall are any other musicians A sides but if there are B sides on this album Off The Wall, Girlfriend, and I Can't Help It are those. Track seven shows there rarely seen vulnerability of Micheal as his star began to shine white hot. Great album.
