Run-D.M.C. by Run-D.M.C.
Jul 26 2022

This album feels pretty dated but it was still kinda cool to hear an important piece of hip hop history. For the first "hard" hip hop album of its time, it still has a lot of charisma and character. Run and DMC have a lot of chemistry together and I liked their raw, in-your-face attitude. The production here is super stripped down by today's standards but I think it complements their energy. It's Like That, Rock Box (always love guitar on a rap song) and Hard Times are the standouts here. "Sucka MC" is an all time diss.

Fun grooves and good times. Le freak is an all timer, I want your love is a nice track. Some of the songs run a little bit long but this album has enough cool guitar riffs from Nile Rogers and 70s charisma to be enjoyable. Fun short listen

Since I Left You by The Avalanches
Jul 28 2022

Love this album. Been listening to this since college and I come to appreciate it more over the years. It follows in the steps of producers like DJ Shadow and finds a way to make energetic, catchy, and melodic songs almost entirely through samples. This album is over 20 years old but still feels cool and exciting and layered to me. I would name some standout tracks but I love this thing from top to bottom. That boy needs therapy.

Discount Little Simz. Some interesting production and blending of genres (I liked Stop Dem) but felt like this tried to be too dramatic and eclectic at the expense of some energy and focus. May be better with more listens but not sure this really belongs on this list.

At Mister Kelly's by Sarah Vaughan

Fallout music. It’s fine I guess, she’s a talented singer but not something I’d ever revisit.

Hard Again by Muddy Waters
Aug 02 2022

Not exactly in my wheelhouse but this was cool to listen to. Muddy waters voice is very good and is just meant for the blues. Instrumentation is pretty good and jam-y and has a real homespun and improvisational feel to it. I want to be loved and mannish boy slap.

Rage Against The Machine by Rage Against The Machine
Aug 03 2022

Can’t believe I never listened to this before this shit bangs. It’s aggressive and in your face but also pointed and political. Morello is insane on guitar and De La Rocha is just an absolute force. And the revolutionary politics here only seem to get better with age. No skips, great album.

Innervisions by Stevie Wonder

Pretty funky and swaggy. Liked Living for the City, Higher Ground, All in Love is Fair. Probably up to a 4/5 if I spent some more time with it but I got z in my house to deal with

Os Mutantes by Os Mutantes
Aug 05 2022

Not bad. Pretty zany instrumentation and interesting melodies, reminds me of later Beatles, monkees, mamas and papas. Stuff in Portuguese always sounds alien to me and this one particularly more so. Interesting listen but not really for me

Endtroducing..... by DJ Shadow
Aug 08 2022

The production on this is still inventive, atmospheric, and entrancing. I love the mysterious and esoteric vibe it has to it. Even the cover art lends it this underground, music-nerd, crate-digging, polyglot panache. Building Steam With A Grain of Salt is an all time song title.

Liked this more than I thought I would. Great chemistry and energy between chuck d and Flava flav. Production is actually pretty solid for it being the 90s. Lyricism is very black nationalist and anti establishment and I can kinda get behind that.

Honky Tonk Heroes by Waylon Jennings
Aug 10 2022

Nice easy listening. Fallout New Vegas music but in a good way.
