This deserves a 5/5 for the harmonies on Helpless alone. I’m not sure it hits the transcendental heights of tracks like Suite: Judy Blue Eyes and You Don’t Have to Cry off the self titled album, but there are no bad tracks here.
I didn’t consider myself an Aretha Franklin fan but I listened to this four times through. There’s something to be said for 30 minute albums that don’t overstay their welcome - no weak tracks, no fluff, no filler.
This just feels like the exploitation of mental illness. There are fragments of good songs on here (No Good Trying, Late Night), but the majority of it has the feeling of watching something you’re not supposed to be privy to. If It’s In You is a horrifying listen.
Well that was less fun than playing in traffic.
