Moon Safari by Air
Jun 26 2023

Jazzier elevator music. Maybe influential since it most likely laid the groundwork for French house? (E.g. Daft Punk). Vocoder on "Remember" sounds Daft Punk-esque. What's really keeping it from being like them is that the tempo is a lot slower, and the sounds are a bit more drown out, and that there aren't as many vocal tracks.

It's cool to hear the precursor to the Gorillaz. I feel like there are small glimpses of the randomness, groove, and grit that are to come with Damon's next musical project (Death of a Party sounds like a Gorillaz song). I feel like there wasn't anything in particular that has resonated with me with this album. I don't think Damon's vocals are the strong suit when I listen to his stuff and the production hasn't wow'ed me, so there hasn't been anything great here. I feel like I'm listening to some Trainspotting/ Jason Statham songs.

Music From Big Pink by The Band
Jun 28 2023

No way this is from 1968. They were ahead of their time with the first song. The guitars are so wet I thought they were from the mid 2010's. Pretty solid stuff though. I enjoyed the variety of instrument the band brings. It really does feel like a band. Wouldn't mind it if I had to listen to this again but I don't think I'd actively seek this out. I think maybe if I was more into this genre then sure? Feel like this music hits more in Tennessee. Like, they'd kill it in a city wide talent show in Nashville. Fav songs: Tears of Rage, In a Station

This Year's Model by Elvis Costello & The Attractions

Thought there was only one Elvis. This album was decent. Dunno why I got some RHCP vibes off it.

The College Dropout by Kanye West
Jun 30 2023

It's personally difficult to fully grasp how pivotal this album is for Kanye and hip-hop in general. I tried to be egregiously critical (or nitpicky, I guess is the better term) of this album as it is not my favorite Kanye album. I actively tried to not give this a 5 but I definitely forgot how consistently good the album is. I _think_ my one gripe besides a song or two is that Kanye went really skit heavy towards the back end of the album. I guess it makes sense given that Kanye really likes skits/outtakes when he listens to music so this album, in a way, is a reflection of that. Also, I think the mixing/mastering is interesting. It feels its age, definitely. It sounds boxy. It was like the first thing I noticed when We Don't Care started playing. I think this is excusable as it only got better with future releases. Will we ever get an explanation on why Kanye said on Two Words, "So I live by two words: Fuck you; pay me."? That's four words. One thing this album does better than other Kanye albums is that his humor really shines through this album. Sure, there are corny, funny one-liners in songs in other albums but there are whole bits that aren't meant to be taken seriously here. Examples of this would be The New Workout Plan, all the skits belittling the value of college degrees, and the build up to Twista's verse in Slow Jamz just to name a few. Feeling a light 5 on this one. If this whole 1001 album experience was a tier-list ranking, TCD would be in S-tier but probably at the far-right of it just like where Kanye is at now politically.

OK Computer by Radiohead

I'm back to save the universe. God-tier writing on Karma Police and No Surprises. Only gripe is that it seems much longer than it actually is. It feels like I'm slogging away listening to this album but it's only 53 minutes long.

Goo by Sonic Youth

This aged quite well. I enjoyed this. I gotta listen to some more Sonic Youth.
