Mostly simple in sound reminiscent of other folk music, strong element of Americana and Illinois/Chicago-centric imagery, story telling crafted for that purpose but somehow still intimate, personal, and relatable all at the same time. Very effective at invoking strong visuals.
Solid early 90s alt rock album, softer (no grunge elements), was happy listening the whole way through. Some songs that seemed to stick out (first-listen fav being “Fall at your Feet”). Would listen to again.
Mid 90s Brit album. Heavy on the Brit, somewhat punk-vibe as well. Lots of British talking bits. Not sure if there is anything I would go back to listen to again, but it was a solid album overall. The titular track “Parklife” probably has the most replay value for me. 3/5
Great classic late-60s early-70s album. Morrison’s voice is great, it has groovy parts. 2 absolute classics in “Riders on the Storm” and “Love her Madly”, also really appreciated the titular “L.A. Woman”. 4/5, would recommend.
Didn’t finish, but really appreciated what I heard. Has a very raw, real feel, underground in a way? Fugee-esque?Especially appreciated tracks “A Day at the Races” and “Thin Line”. 4/5, would totally recommend.
Very identifiable Talking Heads sound, iconic vocalist. Strange lyrics and sounds, but all around enjoyable. “Psycho Killer” will forever be a must listen. 3/5, no other tracks that I plan to come back to, but happy to have heard the album.
Feels like a classic soul/R&B? album. Beautiful voice, lyrics all addressing love and relationships. No songs that stuck out to me on first listen, not something I would go back to, but appreciated it all the same. 2/5
Another classically Talking Heads album. Full of their patented rock sound with the insertion of weird lyrics and noises. “Once in a Lifetime” sits on the back half, which will always be a great listen. Nothing else pulls me back here. 3/5.
This is definitely a punk album. Short songs, fast paced, heavy sounds, lots of talking about just wanting to have beers with friends. Did not do it for me, would not want to listen again. No songs that stick out positively. 1/5
Fun album, very 1960s with the short songs, but the sound is solid. You can feel the British Invasion throughout the entire 30 minutes. Songs that stand out: “Mr. Webster”, “Sunny Girlfriend”, “Randy Scouse Git”. 4/5
This was a great, pleasant listen! Live recording, she is funny, personable, with a beautiful voice. Left a more positive impression than last R&B/soul album (Lady in Satin, I need to figure out what genre this is). 4/5.
Great listen, shows Aerosmith is worth listening to beyond the hits. Classic tracks include “Walk this Way” and “Sweet Emotion”, but the rest of it is classic Aerosmith sound worth coming back to. 4/5.
Strange listen. Randy slings around the N word (both hard R and “Negro”) so many times in the first song that I was thrown off the rest of the album. Overall it’s probably a 3/5, but given that start it has to be a 2/5. 1972 must’ve been a different world to get away with that.
Will always love TVOTR. Album has a great sound that was easy to listen to. Songs that stuck out: “Crying”, “Dancing Choose” is fast-paced and drives so well. Going to listen to again, easy 4/5 on first listen.
A very nice, fun album! Great folksy album from S&G, exactly what you expect. Short and sweet. Highlight for me is “Scarborough Fair”, which sounded like something I’d listen to for Music of Western Civilization back in college. 4/5.
Such a good album. Classics such as “Girls just Wanna have Fun” and “Time after Time”. Songs that stood out: “When you were Mine”, “She Bop”. I stopped picking out songs when I realized every one was great. This album proved just how great Cyndi Lauper was, at least for this record. 5/5.
An album that really captures the almost punk-ish, post-grunge sound of this band. The music is unabashed, with both lyrics and sound projecting the feelings of dissatisfaction and unrest that the band members feel. Karen Al’s voice as always is powerful, and the rest of the band keeps up. Songs that stood out: “Black Tongue”, “No No No”, “Modern Romance”. Classic songs: “Maps”, “Y Control”. 4/5.
Really solid album displaying that classic, 90s West Coast, Ice Cube sound. Plenty of great lyrics, addressing the tension felt day to day and through more impactful events such as Rodney King.
Songs that stood out: “The Predator”. Classic songs: “Today was a Good Day”.
4/5
Classic songs: “American Girl”, “Breakdown”.
Not much memorable. (Was listening to this one while driving on the highway, maybe I didn’t hear it that well?)
