Dull dull dull
First ever listen to this. Some good ideas, and interesting styles. I only recognised one tube, the one about a bag. Only got about half way through. It's quite a long album, right? Some sounds seem a bit dated, which is funny, cos I think of this band as being quite recent. Time flies, doesn't it?
I enjoyed this. I used it as work-background sound, and had a dehumidifier running, so didn't really give the lyrical content the attention it surely deserved. I wasn't familiar with this album, but will endeavour to re-listen to it. I achieved many annoying work-tasks which have been bugging me for a week or so, whilst listening to this, and am happy.
Mostly cringe lyrics. Great voice.
Needs a drummer, an analog piano, and a better beat samplist. Or at least a better drum programmer.
I was unfamiliar with this artist. The first track grabbed me, and I was looking forward to the rest of the album. Sadly, it was relatively disappointing after that.
Voice like butter on a warm non-stick. I found many of the arrangements tedious, though.
I enjoyed this. It's held up well, I reckon. First listen, for me.
Was fine. Kinda background. Would listen again.
Started fine. Decent 70s rock, I thought. Then it went very—and increasingly more so—country. Give me English folk rock / psych, or blues-folk infused rock, but I do so struggle with country. Maybe a dank, dark walk to Lidl wasn't the best of listening conditions. I listened to half of the album. Might finish it in the coming days, but I'm not excited about the prospect.
This was really great. Passed me by, until now, strangely.
I yawned.
I liked this in parts. Would listen again.
I quite liked this. Some interesting ideas, given the context. 'Pride' was familiar.
This was really very good. Mostly unfamiliar to me. Will listen again.
Superb
Problematic seminality. Goes hard, but WTF the sexism is a difficult listen. Can't put it aside.
Pretty good
Don't like live albums much. Jailbait problematic.
Glad I listened, being mostly unfamiliar with the legend.
Dull dull dull
What they said. 3 or 4 stars given all the context, classics and bangers—but this era is not really my Beatles.
Said before that I'm not keen on live albums. This was great though. I think more 'live' stuff should be produced like this was. Two weeks of studio improvements and polish. Helps that the band were seemingly at the top of their game.
I enjoyed this. I'm a sucker for guitar and repetition motifs.
This is good. Kinda knew it would be, but first album length listen for me
I liked this more than I thought it would. Would have liked to have had this in my ears in 82... Or would I?
Perfection
Enjoyed this more than I thought I would. The sparseness seemed a strength, this time around.
Was fine
A masterpiece of perfection.
Thought I'd already reviewed this. Regardless, I think I remember it was pretty decent. Unknown to me before now.
Enjoyable.
Drums and treble! Needs moar bass. So much treble. Is this why they're called Pixies?! Remember being recommended Pixies in the 90s: 'If you like Nirvana you'll probably like the Pixies'. I think I probably found it a bit too whiney, with not enough crunch, back then—I could not dig. It's kind great this album, somehow, mind—but it's just too treble. Bonus star for time context and the odd magical moment.
I need to be in the mood for DB, which I wasn't. Nice enough background though.
These passed me by at the time. I remember some cool kids at college had Fugazi t-shirts, I think, but how did I not know this album? It's great! Maybe I didn't/wouldn't have dug the punkness back then? I did keep thinking of Jim Howick saying 'I'm a shouty man.' https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R7ZkNvMMAfw I do think I missed a trick here, though. Glad to discover now. Cheers, 101-dude.
Always loved it.
