Day 1 - very long, requires focus, so much variety, when paying attention so in depth but need more time to appreciate, will return. Also want to hear OutKast combined not separate, will explore discog
Yeah it was a good album, but like I just don’t vibe with 70s style that much and it’s very much a 70s Guitar record stand out tracks include love and affection, great song, join the boys was good. I like the guitar on this fire like it ends well with Tall in the saddle, but just overall not my thing, so three stars .
Have never been a fan of REMs sound, have tried several times with murmur and automatic and sadly document was the same. Just don’t respond well to their jangle pop and cadence choices. Also I find Michael stipes voice annoying. The hits of this one are stand outs, everything else blended together. Just not for me.
A classic. It both sounds timeless and trapped in time. A 70s record I love. High in concept, but still big on engaging music. Builds in beautifully, and the run from time to us and them is insane. Any colour you like is the weakest song on the album but brain damage instantly comes back up to form. I’ve listened to this once every 5 years and every time my love for it grows. I’ll have to come back to it more often!
Another example of an artist I’ve tried multiple times to get into with no success. I listened to the boatman’s call and ghosteen and didn’t get much out of it, so wasn’t hopeful here. However, I did learn some things with this album. I learnt that to truly appreciate these albums, I’m going to have to stop and actually focus on listening to them. As in, lie down, close my eyes and listen with no distractions. That’s going to be hard to do day to day, especially if it’s a double album like speakerboxx/ the love below! When I did this with this album, things started clicking. I was able to connect more with the musical choices and relax into the soundscape which took on more depth, I could see the musical layers that had been constructed. I’m not saying I had a transcendental experience or anything, but this helped me get so much more out of the album. I think one day to try and appreciate an album is not enough, 3 listens should be the minimum required to start getting something out of a collection of music, but I managed 2 playthroughs of this and started really getting into some of it. Highlights are mostly from the back half, lyre of Orpheus, breathless and carry me were my favourites. Some of the longer cuts like the opener get ready for love and hiding all away were good as well, can imagine they’d be amazing live. I hope to come back to this album, again, nick caves style isn’t easily accessible to me but this is the closest I’ve gotten and I learnt something along the way!
I needed more time. In 1999 I can see this being a big album, but it’s pre strokes indie revolution and I feel that. I didn’t vibe with the vibe. Feeling yourself disintegrate and what is the light started to grow on me but other than that everything blended together.
Have listened to most white stripes albums now in an attempt to get into them, they’re a big part of a scene I love the post Millenium new indie vanguard but it’s just never clicked, and it’s no different here. They’re good, but just a little half baked. They’re like the moody peaches of indie rock, some of it’s cute. Highlights are little ghost and I’m lonely. There’s just not enough meat here.
Not into metal, tried, not for me. Better than a lot of modern stuff, comprehensible lyrics and melody for example, so just scrapes a 2.
If is found this when I used to smoke weed everyday I might have liked it but I didn’t.
Had a great time with this, loved the music, the jazz funk combo is so good, only downside is I’m not very lyrically focused so I feel like I didn’t extract everything out of the album but when I could focus it was great! I’ll keep coming back and get more from it each time.
The shorter material worked for me, the clap (live version) and your move are great, but not a fan of 70s prog and this didn’t dissuade me from that opinion. Occasionally good moments but swamped in wankery.
A mixed bag. One of those artists I like but want to love, but can’t make that jump. Fetch the bolt cutters is the best of her work I’ve heard. This is quite diluted compared to that, which is understandable as it’s her debut and shows that she’s really grown as an artist. Starts strong and gradually declines in terms of quality for me. First four tracks are great, then I drifted out. Stuck in a hard place where I know I need more time and listens to really get everything out of an album, but don’t have said time and want to listen to more music, I also am trying to not force myself to like stuff and to let things go and move on hoping something clicks. This didn’t click but I can see its quality.
Hotel is great
Worst band is good as it’s the original sample for workinonit by j dilla
Clockwork creep is fun
Everything else is above average prog
Darlene is good, this is the perfect background Christmas album that requires little focus
