Violator by Depeche Mode
Jan 03 2024

Lots of sex, drugs, relationships, and world commentary. This darker synth-pop always feel more about the sound and vibe more so than the lyrics a lot of time. Through songs like blue dress, personal jesus, and even enjoy the silence we explore a range of romance to pure lust. Other songs like policy of truth hit on general guilt and do seem to be more focused on how the music makes you feel rather than sending a message. Clean just hits you with the darkest end you could've hoped for on an album titled violator.

Guero by Beck
Jan 04 2024

I loved the different sounds showcased on this album. There is a lot of debate on Beck's lyrcial symbolism, whether there is meaning to be discerned or not, and I think that's one of the greatest parts of his music for me. Some songs do seem nonsensical, but then you catch one that is clearly describing a place you could be present in, or a situation you can imagine. Overall, the grunge/alt sound always speaks to me, and this was expertly done.

Ramones by Ramones
Jan 07 2024

A pretty good punk album. This definitely set the stage for the faster, noisier punk that would follow. The lyrical themes are all over the places, from growing up to love to nonsensical. Punk doesn't need to make sense though, so no one begrudges them a bit of glue sniffing here or there. Overall, a fun, tight, noisy album.

Thematically everywhere from anti-war to religious doubt to ambigous poetry, finally ending with a medieval epic about oppressors. This is the grandfather of progressive rock. I loved every second of it. The instrumentals were masterful, engaging, and I could listen to just them without the lyrics for hours on end no doubt.

Cloud Nine by The Temptations
Jan 11 2024

Themes of love, growing up, drugs, losing love, reconcilliation in love, and winning love back. Just a classic album. A great representation of the the plethora of awesome acts Motown had to offer, this album was fun cover to cover.

What's Going On by Marvin Gaye
Feb 05 2024

songs dealing with the anti-war movement, drug addiction, an increasingly darker world, apathy, and love. Religious undertones throughout, harkening back to a childhood of belief - and presumably a continued belief. Inner city blues comes in to end the album with a very honest consideration of how the inner city black families see the lack of support from the government, even the rest of the country.
