Miriam Makeba by Miriam Makeba
Jan 04 2024

quite good. First few tracks a bit subdued. Better when she belts it out. The last song about the sick old husband was sort of upsetting. I like Voice of Africa better but this did inspire me to listen to it again

Tanto Tempo by Bebel Gilberto
Jan 05 2024

It was perfectly fine. Felt like background music, though. I don't know Portuguese.

Birth Of The Cool by Miles Davis
Jan 09 2024

I own and had listened before but gave me a new appreciation how cool jazz differs from bebop. It's a blend of chill and energy. A good complement to a rainy commute. Will listen again.

Palo Congo by Sabu
Jan 10 2024

Hey, it ain’t jazz though released by Blue Note. Reminds me of some Cuban traditional music. But in the end I found it quite haunting, and also amused by the number that sounds like Sabu’s band is trying to teach someone Spanish.

Water From An Ancient Well by Abdullah Ibrahim
Jan 11 2024

Found it a bit anodyne. Trying out the Dollar Brand recording instead

Dance Mania by Tito Puente
Jan 12 2024

Pretty brilliant. Solid then adds something to kick it over the top. Love the horns.

Pretzel Logic by Steely Dan
Jan 15 2024

A few decent songs and I wouldn’t confuse it with anything else, but it’s not the best part of jazz and don’t get me started on the r and/or b.

A Girl Called Dusty by Dusty Springfield
Jan 16 2024

Misclassified -- this isn't jazz! What grabs me is mostly the voice rather than the songwriting. Though I enjoyed listening to her first album, Dusty in Memphis is much stronger, with unforgettable songs. Note: The album in Spotify appears to have a very different tracklisting, try YouTube or purchase for the original UK release.

Frank by Amy Winehouse
Jan 17 2024

Tuneless and the vox were boring.

Shaft by Isaac Hayes
Jan 19 2024
Third by Soft Machine
Jan 22 2024

Dug it if you got time. Liked it better than the band’s first album. Jazz? Hmmmm. Might listen again.

La Revancha Del Tango by Gotan Project
Jan 23 2024

It's nice to "put on" but listened to about 1/3 of it & can't call it striking or essential (not enough to be "tango's revenge!). PS. Yet again, this ain't jazz, which was the project I requested.

Kenya by Machito
Jan 24 2024

Nice Latin Jazz. It didn't get my attention especially but listened to it when I was working.

Vento De Maio by Elis Regina
Jan 25 2024

Beautiful voice and orchestration is nice, but I am just not sure that this era of Brazilian pop jazz is resonating with me that much.

Dusty In Memphis by Dusty Springfield
Jan 29 2024

Best Dusty. Powerful voice & songwriting as I have enjoyed many times. IYKYK. But again, is it jazz? It came up in my jazz project.

Kind Of Blue by Miles Davis
Jan 30 2024

Very enjoyable. Knew it before as 1 of the few jazz albums I own. Modal = mo melody
