Tanto Tempo (lit. "So Much Time") is an album by Brazilian bossa nova singer Bebel Gilberto. Tanto Tempo was produced by Serbian producer Suba and co-produced by Béco Dranoff for the Ziriguiboom imprint of Crammed Discs. Suba died from smoke inhalation while saving the newly recorded album from a studio fire. The album was included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.Brazilian electronic artist Amon Tobin's "Nova", from the album Permutation, is the backing track of "Samba da Benção".
WikipediaStylish, cool, elegant, laid back bossa nova embraces modern production with electronic elements to create something beautifully dreamy and quietly glorious.
Unless it is already playing on the dance floor or in my pretend cabana in Brazil, I’d never choose to listen
Listened to this album many many times in grad school. It was a great melding of the bossa nova sound with modern production and some electronic elements. I had no problem giving it another listen and realized I had missed it.
I’ll again take issue with the notion that life is not worth living unless you’ve heard this album. Honestly, I could have heard it thirty times already in a dentist office and not even realized it. And that’s not necessarily an insult! As far as background lobby music goes, I thought this was really pleasant. Having a dinner party for your parents and all their friends? Now you know what to put on at a volume just loud enough to be heard but not intrude. And what a lovely name. Bebel Gilberto. I’ll be saying it in my dreams.
Suba, the producer of this smooth, cool, down tempo album died while saving the newly recorded album from a studio fire!!! I mean, I love it, it's sumptuous and sexy but I wouldn't risk my life for it.
This happened to fall on a sunny summer day, sat in the garden, so suited the mood beautifully.
The whole album isn't available on Spotify in the UK. However, what is there is quite lovely. Mellow, understated instrumentation coupled to beautiful, breathy vocals; bar one or two odd production choices (the trip hop percussion on the opening track belies its turn of the millennium provenance) this proved to be a nice surprise.
was waiting for something a bit different from generic rock and this was certainly it. I enjoyed it, would not be a regular listen but good. 3.6
solid bossa nova jazzy vibes. I appreciate the warm sound- none of that hyperclinical dentists' office sound that many newer jazz albums have
Love the latin grooves and precussion. Think its fairly unique to have samba music this well produced.
'Tanto Tempo' brought me back to the random Bossa Nova phase I went through in lock-down last year. As Gilberto proves, that's not a bad thing. Super groovy, although I could imagine it being slightly boring and repetitive if jazz/bossa nova is not really your thing. I listened to it on a Saturday morning while doing the chores. Safe to say, Gilberto's smooth tone made my errands a lot more enjoyable. Some favourites included Lonely, Mais Feliz, August Day Song, and Close Your Eyes.
portuguese jams are what i need in the morning I hope. V v v refreshing. also a little too much so we'll see.
Warm, unaufgeregt, tröstend, funktioniert auch leise, welch moderate Kraft. Ich fühl mich verliebt, berührt, aufgehoben. Intime 3.9
A very chilled out album, great for those lazy Sundays when you just want to relax and drink coffee. Would be an album I will be listening to again
This album it a good example of why I really enjoy this list and this website. I would never listen to this album or have even heard of it otherwise. This was a really enjoyable album despite not being able to understand most of it.
This was some nice and gentle stuff to start my morning to. I feel like I can’t give it a fair review without understanding the lyrics, so I will give it a 4 for benefit of the doubt and for creating a nice atmosphere and vibe.
Even thought bossa nova is a form of jazz I don't think I'm a fan. It's weird, it doesn't sound bad but I wanted to stop midway through the album... I soldiered through it and it got better later but it wasn't easy.
I couldnt find the album but the title track is a beautiful bossa nova piece. Gorgeous voice and nice guitar style.
A potent atom of relaxation- I recognized her voice from a Buddha Bar album I use to zone out when studying
Peaceful but completely the wrong vibe for the time - 3/5 but could be a 4 on a different day
I'm a middle aged man who shouldn't use the word 'vibe' but...this whole album has one.
Very calming and easy to listen to. She's got a beautiful voice - can't say that I'll return to this, but for casual listening I enjoyed it very much
Nice and chill album. If you like bossa nova you will enjoy the melodies and her soothing voice. The English songs broke the spell a bit though.
This was nice enough, but maybe a bit too mellow. I might listen again sometime, it's decent background music.
Solid. Not my favorite but probably because I couldn’t understand the lyrics, and that is on me.
This album feels like the kind of light jazz/downtempo that you heard in every coffee shop in the late ‘90s through mid 2000s. I’m not a samba expert but I feel like this is pretty good. It’s listenable and Bebel has a nice voice. I guess I’d give this 3 stars.
This feels like it's combining some of the more traditional styles and rhythms of Brazilian music with some modern electronic instrumentation and sounds. It makes me feel like I'm in Europe for some reason.
This album is a mellifluous murmur. You could hear this 200 years from now in a high class lounge, possibly in space. More specifically the first three tracks sound like someone took some ordinary Bossa Nova and remixed it by subtly distorting and manipulating the backing band. After that the album changes it up a little bit. Some fun songs near the end, e.g. Bananeira. Gilberto's voice is exposed and lovely and perfect throughout the album. Ultimately this album is limited by it's genre as lounge music, but it's wonderful for what it is.
Really solid, I liked everything I heard, but it didn't fully pull me in. This will likely be a forgotten gem for me.
Not a style I typically listen to but I really dig it. Chill but still makes you want to move a bit. She has a great voice.
This will be different, at least. Samba de Bencao - nice voice. August day song - Sem Contentao Mais Feliz So nice - somehow nice to have in English! Sad :-) Samba e Amour missing: Tanto Tempo - found this somewhere else. very nice. ALguem - cant find this one Lonely - done Bananeira - done : with a bit more beat to start. Nice change. Apparently about a tree. upbeat throughout close your eyes - doesn't do it for me at all. no return - on a special edition: a cover of the kinks apparently! slightly forced into a bossa nova thing - actually, theoriginal is bossa nova too! Show's how muh i know. In the end, I liked it a bit, but its not really for me.
-Some kinda cool stuff happening in the background of "Samba Da Bencao" -I like the rhythm of the melody in "Sem Contencao." It sounds almost swung or something. (Maybe it is? Idk, I'm not a music expert) -"Bananeira" is quite upbeat, at least compared to the rest of the album -"Close Your Eyes" at like 0:27 sounds like a lowkey version of the background music in "Backside Wallrides and Rock 'N' Roll Inspiration: The Amazing Richie Jackson Skateboard Show Ep. 3" at like 4:00 -A lot of these just kinda sound like elevator music, or maybe lounge music with a lady singing in Spanish. Just not the most impressive thing I've listened to.
Great sound and production, just not the most engaging songs for me. A little too slow to generate a thrill out of me the way traditional Irish or South African music does.
I did listen but don't really have any strong thoughts about it - perhaps I wasn't listening enough.
I samba and bossa nova alot - this was nice. I wasn't as into it as some of my other Brazilian favorites though - Elis Regina, Antonio Carlos Jobim and Jorge Ben Jor.
If it has been a while since being on a vacation, this album will remind you of that. Bebel Gilberto's easy-going, laid back sort of croon very easily slows things down. The contrast of that against an energetic yet balanced band is pleasing however, as the brain suggests conflict and satisfying resolution all at once. While this style of music is not the usual choice for this reviewer, it is very easy to respect and think fondly of the experience.
Not my usual fare but this is great - perfect for a lazy summer day (which today isn't). Gentle bossa nova grooves combined with a fittingly perfect voice.
I love a good samba. This didn't really blow my skirt up, but was still fun to listen to. I just kept hearing Girl From Ipanema.
A very pleasant album but it's background music. I feel like it should be playing in a nice cocktail lounge. I wouldn't go out of my way to listen to it again. The 1/2 star option would be helpful here too. I'd like to give it 2.5 but because I don't dislike it, I'll round up instead of down.
Very listenable, but a little too subdued for me. As a debut, though, it is impressive.
She has a nice voice and the music is chill and relaxing, but it's a bit too easy listening for me.
Cool, suave background music for a cocktail bar - the girl from Ipanema in a dozen samba variation. Very nice, but why is it on this list? It's background music.
"August Day Song", "Tanto Tempo" o "Sem Contenção".
Pleasant and enjoyable without being obtrusive. Could easily be a movie soundtrack, or a cool advert.
According to wikipedia, this record was saved from a studio fire by it's producer, Suba, who subsequently died due to smoke inhalation. What a story! What a blissful sound. Bebel Gilberto's take on bossa nova is uniquely hers, incorporating atmospheric elements to create the ultimate calming record. Every song is a pleasant listen, though the most notable one is the Summer Samba cover. Perhaps the songs could be more memorable, but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
Warm, languid, elegant, easy on the ear. At a certain point it all starts to sound alike, but I enjoyed it. Fave Songs: Samba da Bênção, Mais Feliz, Tanto Tempo, Samba e Amor, Lonely
I really digged the first half of this album as a super chill, really relaxing and stimulating background jazz record. Then the second half of the album added annoying samba elements into the mix and that sort of ruined it for me. In particular, So Nice and Bananeira were so bad that I had to skip them. Those tracks alone are enough to bring this down from a solid 4 to a shaky 3.
3.3 - Listening to this record reminds me of interacting with my wife’s extended family in Wisconsin. Everyone is so friendly and adept at making small talk. Should we grill out this evening? “That would be nice.” Maybe go over to the bar later and catch the game? “That would be nice.” Looks like we got another sunny day tomorrow. “That would be nice.” It’s comforting and quickly becomes sickening.
The nice thing about slower, stripped-down samba albums like this one is they allow me to realize how much Spanish I've forgotten since high school.
Quite pleasant. If I was in a cocktail lounge and the band was doing this, I would be happy to sit and order a few drinks and enjoy.
Really enjoyed this album as background music while working. The story about someone dying in a fire to save the album is wild, I liked it - but not enough to run into a burning building.
Love Bossa Nova. Interesting modern production. I like some of it, especially the more traditional sounding.
Another slightly odd choice as far as Brazilian music goes. Or at least so it seems to me, unfamiliar with the music but listening to this entirely accessible take on bossa nova. The production elevates it by the right number of inches. Diverse styles in the back meld into something recognizable, while the sequencing moves us from warm vinyl to a relatively energetic finale.
lounge-y, jazzy, bossa nova, however indistinct, commits the worst act which is that it's generally boring unfortunately
enjoyable but it's not my thing. i guess you have to be in the mood for some chill bossa nova
With Bebel's suave and smooth voice, intimate delivery and jazzy instrumentals, there certainly is a lot to enjoy.... be it as background music somewhere in a bar in Latin America. That does not mean its awful, it's just not something I would ever actively listen to again. 2/5.
Have never really been able to get into Bossa Nova, especially in comparison to the other amazing music coming out of Brazil. It always just fades into the background no matter if you're trying to listen or not. It's the music equivalent of a boring football (soccer) game--nice but pretty hard to pay attention to the whole time.
Smooth and jazzy yet highly repetitive. The first three tracks are fairly decent, but then a sudden drop in quality for the rest of the album (except "So Nice" which gives me Evangelion vibes). Wouldn't mind listening to this in an elevator... just not the whole thing.
Another one of those albums that seems made intentionally to be played in business hotels. By no means is it bad, but that's kinda my point: beyond saying "well it's a bit bland I guess", there is nothing in it a travelling businessman could complain about. Is the sound abrasive in any way? nope. Is there any kind of dynamic range that might jolt a drunken conference attendee out of a stupor? nope. Are the lyrics going to piss conservatives off? On the off chance that they understand Portugese, probably not - and the English tracks are as tame as it gets. Talk about a masterclass in mediocrity. 2/5.
This album would never normally get picked up by my radar. When she gets her groove on it's good. But it's not really my bag.
Another token album for this US-centric list, how man versions of “so Nice” are on the list?
I usually like Brazilian music but this passed me by. I even put it on a 2nd time as only half the tracks are on Spotify, and I still didn't really notice it
Nah, not a fan. Not that there is anything wrong with it for background music, but this is not something I would ever listen to again. 2
Neither here nor there. A dead-on 2.5/5. Would round up to 3, but it kinda gives me the shits when I don't have a clue what the lyrics are communicating. Lyrics ARE important. That, and the chord changes which are intended to sound elegant are overused here past the point of cliche.
Typical easy listening bossa nova vocal jazz for the cocktail lounge. Cozy and warm, but also boring, without any edge
This is a bit dull tbh. Slightly elevated lift music. Not unpleasant to have on in the background, but it didn't grip me at all. 2/5.
Great example of an album that is very good music of a style I'm not interested in. Having said that, there were a couple I'd love to hear on a bar's roof terrace on a sunny day, not a care in the world, specifically August Day Song and Samba E Amor. Pleasant.
Took me a while to get through this album. It's a style of music that I'm not used to. At first I didn't like it, but it slowly grew on me. I might listen to it again. Favourite track: "Bananeira"
I like foreign music, but not enough to listen to entire albums in a sitting. There are some cool grooves here, but not understanding the words leaves it feeling shallow and I feel disconnected.
Nothing here was designed for me, and that's okay, not everything has to be aimed at me. I don't like the music, I understand very few of the lyrics. It's a lazy, lay around in the sun type of record. Nothing here is bad, it just isn't made for me.
This album was in Spanish which makes it difficult to enjoy. The singer has a good voice and felt Norah jones Esque. Overall it’s value was lost on me. 1.9/10
Yep, dope crunchy and raw sounds.
This was great background music. It didn't mean a thing to me, but it was a good soundtrack to a Friday night.
