Sonically, the album was refreshing at the start with elements of African rhythms and percussion instruments and North African pentatonic melodies, but it became stale rather quickly. It seemed as though there was a solid theme for each song but the lyrics were just thrown together to match for some songs. I think it’s a good album but maybe not my preferred style.
Interesting sound. It feels like the sound (maybe even just the riff) is the focal point of every song and the lyrics are a bit of an afterthought tacked on the end. The drumming is unbearably basic, and the lack of variety in the style and tone of the guitar riffs doesn’t help. There are one or two gems here, for sure, but I feel like you could pick your favorite four or five tracks and have the same album in a much more pleasingly concise fashion. Towards the end it felt as if I was glancing at my watch wondering “when is this gonna end?”
An absolute classic. A unique sound, masterful musicianship and creativity and it just rocks hard as hell. One of my favorites.
There were interesting textures and production on this album, sometimes crossing into over-production. I thought it was sometimes difficult to tell where one song ends and another begins. I enjoyed the soundscape in general but nothing stood out as particularly catchy or poignant. Enjoyable to listen to, but not very memorable.
Classic album of the nineties. The overblown grunge vocals are a bit much but I can still enjoy a few tracks off this album. Nostalgic.
I don’t think the compositions are very cohesive. The production separates the instruments specially, and each instrument tends to feel like it’s doing its own thing rather than playing together. Vocal melodies are bland.
Very smooth and wonderful compositions. The pieces flow smoothly together to create a cohesive idea. Production is phenomenal, and the mix is perfect. Everything in its right place. This is my kind of music.
Bland 60’s rock with pedestrian lyrics. Good compositions but it was very of the moment. Might be good to throw on as background music.
This album was really special. The compositions were catchy and satisfying to listen to. The inclusion of African musical motifs and rhythms while writing about the American South is a great touch. I really loved how the record sounded. Bonus points for the cheesy 80's gated reverb drums.
