Machine Head by Deep Purple
Jan 31 2024

Classic rock album but has lost some of its luster over the years. Liked the opener Highway Star a lot, though the album goes downhill from there. Not to say it's ever 'bad' (although Never Before comes close), but I caught myself nodding off while listening to it several times. At times it's because of repetitive riffs, other times it's just kind of boring. Fun listen overall, but gets upstaged by other rock albums. Fav. Tracks - Highway Star, Smoke On the Water

Me before listening: "I hate Coldplay. All their music just sounds like high school motivational videos." Me after listening: "...Okay, they're actually not bad" Yeah, I didn't go into this with particularly high expectations given my dislike of this band, but I was somewhat pleasantly surprised when listening. Mind you, I could go the rest my life without hearing Clocks ever again, but that's beside the point. Coldplay shows pretty unquestionable skill here in creating appealing compositions and establishing emotions in their music. Arguably too much - the melodrama on this album certainly started wearing on me about halfway through. I still could enjoy the album overall though.

Fear Of A Black Planet by Public Enemy
Feb 02 2024

Strong album. The production on it is is fantastic: Sounds incredibly fucking angry in all the right ways, and doesn't give a fuck about whether you have a problem with it. Wears its politics on its sleeve, plus it's just a fun listen in general. Recommended-

Beggars Banquet by The Rolling Stones
Feb 05 2024

This album starts great with Sympathy for the Devil, a classic song that just about everyone knows. Unfortunately, the rest of the album doesn't hold up. It's a very hit and miss album with some good songs hidden in the mix, but it never gets quite as memorable as the opening track (which honestly sounds like a completely different album), nor does it compensate for the handful of boring country rock songs that pop up on here. It's competently produced, the riffs make sense, the lyrics range from meaningful to pap, but it didn't stick with me. I don't feel old enough to get into this, unfortunately.
