When I think of Stevie Wonder, Superstitious is the song I think of immediately. This is a song that still all these years later people instantly hear and groove too fondly. His lyrics in this album are clear and honest. What impresses me most is that his voice has so much depth, clear and smooth to jazzy throat rasp, it scratches all the right parts of your brain. His immense talent as a blind artist makes him a legend, which does not surprise me this album is on this list.
I’ve heard these songs before but Ive never paid attention to the lyrics. I liked the beastie boys before listening to this album but I’m not so sure now. The bad boy persona is “cool” but it crosses a line for me when it comes to guns at school, being attracted to minors and putting drugs in girls drinks so they will have sex with you. Sure the times were different and the songs are catchy, but I don’t find them relatable. Overall, after listening carefully I think that their unique and progressive sound carried the heavy weight that led them to success.
Kendrick’s album is like opening up a diary and reading through dozens of poems. It’s raw and emotional and sometimes unsettling. At parts it’s like we are in the same room and he’s singing a gospel. My favorite part is the story at the end of the songs that keeps growing. It kept my attention and peaked my curiosity. Mortal man finally recaps the whole story and to tell it as though he is speaking in an interview with his role model Tupac… brilliant.
I feel like I need to be high to enjoy this album. The beats are catchy but the lyrics lack for me. The lyrics are repetitive and the songs sound similar. The tunes give beachy, Cali vibes if you made them mellow and glum. The vocal abilities that are on display are weak but maybe that is the appeal?
Not ground breaking, but fun classic rock. Deff has dive bar vibes. I would listen again - throw this on as background music at night while hanging out.
Lyrics are hard to make sense of but I think that fits the time. People on drugs just singing whatever is in their hearts. It might not seem like it has any meaning but it’s what they’re feeling and they’re trying to use a unique way to express it. Almost purposefully being “misunderstood”. Solid instrumentals.
Another solid album by Stevie. His voice is so powerful and some songs just hit so deeply with their meaningful lyrics. It’s no wonder 50 years later his music is still relevant. I wasn’t familiar with his music much before but each album gives me a new level of respect for him.
If I was alive/ a young adult when this album came out I think I would have been a fan. It sounds like it could be from so many generations -60s. 70s, 80s, 90s. I appreciate the lyrics being clear and easy to hear and just transparent enough to understand.
I was kinda skeptical with the intro song, not sure what I was getting into, but this album is kinda iconic. The electric sound and his voice I immediately get taken back in time. I can tell this album influenced generations to come as I was listening to some parts and was thinking how it reminds me of contemporary artists. The songs did start to sound very similar after a while and I’m also not a fan of the instrumental only songs but I appreciate the artistic liberty.
Well thought out production with an existential love theme. The mood of the album changes with each song. Starts out with a very dramatic tone, her voice is haunting. Then switches to a more light hearted roller coaster with her voice turning angelic. Original Lana del Rey?
True authentic rock and roll music. Tom Petty’s voice is very whiny but in the best way. I like the variety of song themes and the lyrics that go along with them. Classic album all around.
I like jazz but without lyrics is tough for me to enjoy. It feels like elevator music or at most soothing background music. Artist is no doubt talented but hard to comprehend what makes this album specifically influential.
His voice caught me off guard at first, he sounds like a drunk guy at a bar that once you start listening to is somehow good.
This is my first time listening to Bob Dylan and I think I get the hype of why he became popular when he did. I don’t think this album would have done it for him but it is a solid listen. Comforting like an honest rambling from an old man who has been through it.
