Not really my thing but I can appreciate the musical skill behind it. Initiatly I wasn't interested, but as I listened I quite enjoyed what I was hearing. It probably deserves another listen but I probably won't get around to listening to it.
Good album. I like the sounds (moody) and it gets a bit heavy in places in a great way. I think it sounds of its time, which is not bad. There are some catchy songs, I really like Prayers for Rain, Fascination Street, and Lullaby. Also like his voice. I would listen again, but I probably wouldn't seek it out to listen to. I think it was a bit too long as I got bored towards the end. And, it didn't really resonate on a deep level with me, like the songs are good and it sounds good, the lyrics are not bad but they don't exactly hit me in a very impactful way, they're just fine. Torn between 3 and 4 stars but I'm rating according to my personal enjoyment, so it has to be a 3.
I was surprised that I actually liked it. It’s really good and obviously groundbreaking. I’ve heard people complain about the misogyny but it’s all round offensive in every way and it’s meant to be,
So you can’t really single out the sexism as bad. It’s well produced, cleverly written. Obviously I’m not the intended audience, then again I get the feeling it was written in the hopes of pissing people like me off back in the time, it’s a provocative piece of art.
Good, production is nostalgic and love the rhythm section, bass and drums stands out. Also love the vocals and lyrics, solid album but not standout for me personally so I will rate 3 stars.
Amazing album. I love everything about it, it’s so diverse, exciting, theatrical and also sentimental and nostalgic for me because I used to listen to it with my mum on cassette in the car when I was about 4 years old and just started school. Favourite songs: death on 2 legs, prophet song, love of my life and ofc bohemian rhapsody
I didn't like this. It was slow, boring, felt like background music. I'm giving it a 2 because Sexy Boy is not bad and I know this is technically not a bad album (probably a good album) I just don't like it.
Enjoyable. Helps me connect the dots with 60s and britpop and garage/indie rock of the 90s and 00s. I really liked it. Quirky lyrics. Sunny Afternoon an obvious highlight but other good songs on here. I like the Britishness of it.
Excellent album, enjoyable all the way through. I always thought of the beatles and rolling stones as the 2 iconic British bands of the 60s. Listening to this made me appreciate how different they are. Rolling Stones really lean into Americana on this album - honky tonk, blues, rock and roll. Done in a really cool way. Stands the test of time. Clearly influential for a lot of rock bands that followed through the 70s and beyond. Gimme Shelter is one of my favourite songs by them, and it really kicks of the album.
Not very exciting, but a couple of good tunes. Theres a "vibe" here, and its "sad man music". The name David Gray really suits him - a totally middle of the road man, making ordinary music. I am struggling to understand why this album was so popular, I suppose it does have a realness to it. It reminds me of a Sunday afternoon in England, driving back from the pub with my parents where I'd had a coke and a bag of crisps. The sky is grey, its drizzling, its probably April - not that cold but chilly. I've got that "School tomorrow" sunday scaries feeling. I'm staring out the car window and Babylon or Sail Away is playing. That's how I feel about this album. But I might listen to it again to try and give it another shot.
This album is flawless, I've listened to it for years and its still amazing. Wonderful musicianship and songwriting. It is both gentle and also hits hard in places. Diverse songs with epic arrangements. Yeah, love it.
Really good jazz, I don’t know much about jazz but I like this
Better than expected, I dont like Rod Stewart that much as I'm not keen on his voice, however what I liked about this album was the guitar work. Sounds like 12 string was used a lot, and also mandolin. It has a country/folky sound, a bit bluesy. Maggie May and Mandolin Wind the best songs. Some of his lyrics are a bit cheesy on other songs, not a huge fan but its a decent listen.
