Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette

This is the most 90s album i've ever heard just from the opening guitar riffs. I like her voice when she's not doing weird things with it. I think that was kind of her trademark but I don't really like the cracking that she does and a lot of country singers do. She's working through a LOT in this album. jagged little pill walked so that Sour and Guts could run.

I should have listened to this when it was new, I think 16 year old me would have really enjoyed this and it would have made its way into my pantheon of great albums. Hearing it in 2024 was good, and I did enjoy it, but I don't think it was the right time for me.

Rio by Duran Duran

Great 80s album. I would have dug it if I were alive then.

Violator by Depeche Mode
Sep 27 2024

A couple good songs but mostly kind of boring. Am I a bad 80s music fan?

Blue Lines by Massive Attack
Sep 29 2024

Not for me. Should stay in the malls of the 90s.

Fragile by Yes

Great early 70s album. Not for my regular rotation but I never get sad when Yes shows up on the radio.

I don't think I'm the target audience for this album.

SHE GOT PIPES DAMN Music I can recognize is good, but not something i'm going to choose to listen to on my playlists.

Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock

I don't think it's for me. It's a little bit too boring? I don't know. I probably would have liked it if it hit me at the right time in my teens, but the mono-tone nature of his voice and the rest of the music really doesn't unlock any feelings in me.

A country album! I'm not usually a country fan, but I don't dislike country either. Pretty whiny 80s country here I think. Not my favorite. Not loving it. The title track is kind of nice though. Not something I'd choose to listen to though I think. It's very stereotypical country. Maybe there's some "Seinfeld isn't funny" going on here but it's really not that interesting to me.

Blue by Joni Mitchell

Is this the oldest album I've reviewed so far? Early 70s, and it SOUNDS like it! But I don't necessarily hate it. Feels like the soundtrack to a period piece set in the early 70s. But it probably wasn't used in contemporary movies at the time. I get the feeling this album is very influential to a lot of folk acts, especially some of the earlier and later Decemberists stuff. Carey is a standout track. California is good too! I've definitely heard that song before. A Case of You has strong Crane Wife 3 vibes at the start. Or, I guess I should say CW3 has strong ACoY vibes at the start Another album I can recognize is pretty good (and influential in its spaces) but not one I could find myself listening to if I didn't listen to it back in the day and build those life/nostalgia connections.

Bayou Country by Creedence Clearwater Revival

I mean come on. It's a classic for a reason. we all love CCR. Do we listen to CCR on a regular basis? No. Am I speaking for a lot of people in the way I'm typing now? Yes. I don't care.

Back To Black by Amy Winehouse
Jun 26 2025

It's also a classic album. Not really my style but it's good to have listened to.

Go Girl Crazy by The Dictators
Jul 07 2025

Opening monologue reminds me of Stevo32 from Sum41 and I think he'd appreciate the comparison. Feels a little bit like a proto-Ramones. I think it was probably great back in the day, but doesn't really hold up anymore on its own. "Seinfeld isn't funny" and all that. Still, good to be familiar with history! I wish we'd covered more stuff like this in my history of Punk music class in college.

Birth Of The Cool by Miles Davis
Jul 10 2025

Awesome jazz album. Feels generic but probably because it is so influential.

In Rainbows by Radiohead
Jul 15 2025

Sure is some Radiohead. Not changing my opinion on them but it's not bad

Bad Company by Bad Company

More bands need to have a song that is just their band's name. But this album is a classic 70s rock album that I don't think gets enough credit for how great it is. I know there's a lot of great music in that era, and this in is underrated IMO. Reminds me of Boston's first album. Oops all bangers.
