Can't Buy A Thrill by Steely Dan

There are two types of people: those who like Steely Dan and those who are wrong. Composition, playing, mix/production are all spot on.

This is so fun! Laura beautifully bends the rules of traditional midcentury pop through this whole album to give us something that sounds familiar in its production, but new and interesting in its form.

Black Monk Time by The Monks

Didn’t expect to see the Monks on here, I’ve loved this album since listening to the No Dogs in Space series. A very 60s/midcentury pop feel to the record but with a proto punky weirdness thats decades ahead of its time.

Bad Company by Bad Company
Jun 27 2025

Just a good ol classic rock album, and theres nothing wrong with that… but nothing really stands out to make the album memorable or unique either. Seagull, the only acoustic song on the album, was a welcome relief from the standard rock tunes and did in fact peak my ears at the end of album, leaving me wanting more of what Bad Company can come up with.

Blood Sugar Sex Magik by Red Hot Chili Peppers
Jun 28 2025

Such an all over the place album that touched upon damn near every corner of music that would define the 90s sound. Ton of classic hits on here, but this was the first time I’ve listened to this album top down and Mellowship Slinky and They’re Red Hot came as fun surprises. Anthony Kiedis is a piss poor singer, but his raw passion combined with Flea, Frusciante, and Chad’s crazy playing are what make the Chilli Peppers.

Dookie by Green Day
Jun 29 2025

I don’t really want to like this album but I kinda do. Its too clean and polished to be a good punk album and too fast and loud to be a good pop album… but thats what makes Dookie, and Green Day’s sound following it, so unique. Their blend of pop and punk better than any other pop punk band out there.

The Next Day by David Bowie
Jun 30 2025

I’m not the worlds biggest Bowie fan to begin with, but why is this the album that this site chose to represent him? Its fine and does have some good tunes, but it largely sounds like David struggled to record vocals across it… it has kind of a cool Neil Young sound to it but that’s not the sound anyone associates with THE Ziggy Stardust

Blackstar by David Bowie
Jul 01 2025

This is a wild ride, especially comparing with Bowie’s previous album the next day. Very 80s style arranging but with a modern feel and tone that shares a lot in common with a lot of current R&B and soul records. 2016 was an outstanding year for music and this album is a big contributor.

Dummy by Portishead
Jul 03 2025

Good n weird, raw n gritty. Production is all great, and lyrics take us on a fun journey. Gotta start being the dbag that won’t shut up about Portishead

Fly Or Die by N.E.R.D
Jul 13 2025

I discovered N.E.R.D maybe a year ago fell in love pretty quick, but haven’t heard this album before. It’s categorized as hiphop/rap, but it has more consistent rock production elements to it than any other N.E.R.D record I’ve listened to… which I dig. I think Seeing Sounds is still MY top nerd album, but this should no less a testament to N.E.R.D‘s versatility and range (which, given all the talent in the project’s roster, is expected)

Ramones by Ramones
Jul 14 2025

I just don’t like the Ramones. Too milk toast to be punk, not talented enough to be anything else.

So by Peter Gabriel
Jul 17 2025

There’s nothing to complain about with this album unless you aren’t a fan of 80s synth pop… which I am not. Sledgehammer is kind of a bop but the rest just isn’t my cuppa tea

Woodface by Crowded House
Jul 18 2025

This album is kinda neat. Just some easy-listening soft rock. Nothing is really jumping at me to keep my attention, but I appreciate the good production and songwriting. Strings on “All I Ask” were a cool surprise

Jul 19 2025

Its Ray Charles, impeccable singer yada yada yada. At first I didn’t really get the album title until I did some research and discovered these are all covers of popular country songs of the time, and I ended up recognizing a couple. On top of being a creative concept, I think it’s a huge testament to how impressive early R&B arrangements are, from the enchanting strings in ballads like Born to Lose to the rowdy big band horns in blues tunes like Bye Bye Love. A little too long in my opinion but cool to see this Legend’s take on some old Honky Tonks.

Blue by Joni Mitchell
May 26 2026

Its objectively a very well made album, love Joni’s voice and production and recording are spot on. I didn’t fully GET it after just one listen, found it kinda odd and teetering on inaccessible from a popular music standpoint but thats not gonna stop me from giving it another chance. All I Want, California, and This Flight Tonight are my favs

Black Monk Time by The Monks

Didn’t expect to see the Monks on here, I’ve loved this album since listening to the No Dogs in Space series. A very 60s/midcentury pop feel to the record but with a proto punky weirdness thats decades ahead of its time.

Blood On The Tracks by Bob Dylan
May 28 2026

I’m gonna rate this album with the ol compliment sandwich. Compliment: The storytelling and lyricism throughout the album is great, truly one of the greatest American folk writer. Criticism: Bob is a bad musician. I get that his voice is an acquired taste and I think it works really well on the first track, Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts, and Shelter from the Storm, but I can’t stand most of his vocals here. His guitar playing is fine but nothing special, and can’t play harmonica for shit. Compliment: Production and arranging are outstanding. If Bob stayed a producer/songwriter and left the singing to others I think he’d be far less divisive.

Tarkus by Emerson, Lake & Palmer
May 29 2026

Ugh… fusion I liked Jeremy Bender and Are You Ready Eddy? but the rest just ain’t for me

Moon Safari by Air
May 30 2026

Loved this one. Bounces between fatboy slimesque electronic beats and soothing soul grooves
