...And Justice For All
Metallica
One of the things I remember about this album was looking up the remastered version on youtube where someone had really kicked up the bass in the mix so it sounded way better than on the original.
It's a common complaint that you can't really hear Cliff's bass on the album despite him being universally recognised as an amazing player.
Spent a fair amount of time playing along to this one too learning the riffs from Blackened
I think the first song I heard off this album was when I was watching Kerrang TV in the 2000s and the video for One was playing on there fairly regularly. Telling the story of a soldier who's left blind mute and paralysed. The video was cut with clips from a movie that, and it was pretty scary at the end, really haunting when the soldier is asking to be killed in Morse code.

Back At The Chicken Shack
Jimmy Smith
I've been on a bit of jazz listening kick lately so this comes at a good time.
I like a lot of jazz stuff, haven't heard this album before, or of Jimmy Smith so I guess that just goes to show how little I do really know about jazz in terms of listening to a lot of different tracks and artists
First track I'm guessing Jimmy is the keys player as it's prominent. Im listening to the Rudy Van Gelder edition on Youtube, now that name is familiar as I've listened to Wayne shorter album speak no evil the Rudy Van Gelder edition. No idea who Rudy is, but probably a very important guy I imagine.
First track is a nice 12 bar shuffle, very chill and laid back. Kenny Burrell is on the guitar, I've heard of him before, but again couldn't name any of his tracks.
This second track is nice, very cool I love the bass. This whole album is very chill so far, I don't know if i was expecting some kind of hard bebop because of the Blue note record, but it's very smooth. This one sounds like a more standard 2-5-1 thing. I could be completely wrong, but sounds more like a contemporary jazz standard.
If this was the 60s this is probably a full on old organ he's playing too, not just a piano. I know very little about organs but I recently learned that even though it looks like a piano it's very very different to play.
Is he doing the bass all with his feet? On the organ that's cool if so, I dont know if there's a bass player on the album. Just read he does it all with his feet

1999
Prince
I think I listened to this album on the sofa one day whilst I was lying around during the COVID lockdown. I was staying at my parents, furloughed from my job, I'd started writing music reviews for small bands to pass the time. But i was also exploring a lot of music, I think I was interested in Prince at the time because of Purple Rain, so I went and listened to this album, but i don't remember much of it apart from the title track 1999.
It's very synthy, I always associate Prince with guitar skills but he had a huge and varied career so I guess this is like a very 80s album. Very synth driven, some cool hooks but it sounds quite thin, very tinny on the drums. Some very nice synth patterns in a few songs, like DMSR
This album is theatrical as hell, I guess they thought the world was going to end, it's like they went into the future and robots have taken over so they're just going nuts before they all die. I guess the world ending in the year 2000 thing was built up a lot in the 80s/90s

Can't Buy A Thrill
Steely Dan
Oh man I'm on a huge Steely Dan kick at th moment, mainly Aja but I've heard this one too of course
Very slick very cool. I just watched their 93 concert this afternoon on YouTube.
This one is very cool for guitar and piano which I'm learning at the moment, so rewarding to listen and learn about

Wild Is The Wind
Nina Simone
This is a very versatile album, lots of different styles, rock and roll blues, haunting ballads and jazzy showtunes with big orchestral features
Nina Simone is a beast on the piano too, so good playing so complicated stuff and singing all the while, amazing

Pink Moon
Nick Drake
Took a break from this 1000 albums a day, jumping back in. Never heard of this artist or album.
1st track, a nice acoustic intro, very cool and chill alternative vibe. Laid back vocals, like an elliot smith, but more upbeat. Kind of reminds me of Joni mitchell too
I like the open ringing sound of the guitars, maybe some open tunings, very folky but with a pop vocalist
the fingerstyle is very cool, very interesting rhythms that pop out, very impressive if it's just one guitar which I think it might be? I dont know though. Okay i think it is just him and one guitar, which is so sick, the whole thing is like this
Really short album, 28 minutes, but 11 tracks. really gets through a lot of ideas very quickly back to back
How is he playing this complicated stuff and playing so well. I do really like this fingerstyle stuff, with vocals super impressive.
and then he did a track Know, that was literally like me playing my first blues riff when i was 13. super clunky and stripped back, very repetitive with a very simple vocal part over the top. Very unusual, right int he middle of the album but a bit of a palate cleanser, then back to the complex fingerstyle stuff

Otis Blue/Otis Redding Sings Soul
Otis Redding
Think I've only ever heard dock of the bay from Otis which seems strange as he's probably got loads of great songs
We named our kitten we got 2 years ago Otis (in my.mind after redding) when we got her. Yes we thought she was a boy until the vet told us otherwise but I liked the name so it stuck
