Young Americans
David Bowie
Somebody up there had Luther Vandross in the backing vocals. Young Americans, the Collab with Lennon as well...what a vibey album. Although Bowie called it a plastic soul album, some sort of critique of celebrity and perhaps the warning of glossy celebrity sneaking god knows what in the mental loading dock

Green River
Creedence Clearwater Revival
Absolutely safe, predictable, nothing-affirming, nothing-challenging Wurlitzer rock. Yawn.

Fela Kuti
Love me some afrobeat, and it's very interesting Nigerian history, but I played this album to death a couple of years ago

Couldn't listen beyond a track or two. Bland smarmy poppy mehfest

I'm sure it was influential at the time, but now it just sounds like fairly generic old punk

Liquid Swords
GZA
Absolutely fat album. Love the anime sampling at the start, and I learnt about the east west hip hop beef of the 90s. I'll come back and listen to this another time

Totally fine, again perhaps they pioneered this sound or something, but it wasn't really interesting to me

Lazer Guided Melodies
Spiritualized
That was a cool experience, not my genre normally, but sure that would have been great to cop as a novel genre at the time. Kind of dragged after a few songs and I tuned out but

The Man Machine
Kraftwerk
Perhaps it is valid in the context of its time and contemporaries - sure, I read the wiki page.
But elegaic, best electronic album of all time? Aw hell no - this music sucks. To me it just captures the naive, modernist obsession with "robot as personal slave", a kind of ham fisted reaching for the world, grabbing at progress absent mindedly. Now we all have 4 hours of screen time a day and job loss for AI.
2 stars for novelty but otherwise corny, unenjoyable almost muzak

Little Earthquakes
Tori Amos
Ugghhhhh do you ever watch those rich white Jewish American movies from the early 90s like meet the fockers, sex in the city and so on, where the subjectivity of the characters is just in another stratosphere? Easy money, big houses, no worries. And then the characters are obliviously living out petty dramas in ivory towers, but their vain concerns were accidentally global hegemon? That's what this music is. Music for your rich friend's mom to feel like she's heard, and part of the sisterhood of travelling pants. I want to invert a quote from Thoreau about eagles flying low amongst gorges in the mountains - the naive heights reached here are reaching the top of the modest emotional tree canopy of pop at best. Three stars for being technically proficient music and singing. Three stars for gauche introspection.

Oh hell yeah! What an album! Now we can forget the drab, formulaic rock of the 60s behind, and really tell some human stories. It's Paul Kelly 2 decades in advance. It's soul music for white people. It tells a story and makes you feel good. What's not to love?
One star deducted for cringe lewd metaphors in the song a about pursuing the girl. Other than that, great album.
Note: where the hell did I hear drive old Dixie down before? That's a voice haunting me from the ancient past

Pills 'n' Thrills And Bellyaches
Happy Mondays
Oh HELL no. This is suffering. Atonal, says nothing, no aesthetic, not heavy, not light, no real plotline or narrative, this is like blur but without any charisma. Deeply uncool music. It's not even small guys or a home made aesthetic. There are literal bedroom USB stick albums better than this.

At first I was like "oh sick, this is great jazz!" And then I was like "oh no, this is so much jazz"
Excellent music, from and for someone on another wavelength. And despite everything, jazz sometimes feels like a gullibility test. Maybe that's what makes it interesting.

I wasn't really in the mood for this, but still a fun album. The wacky energy predates becks "whiskey cyclone hotel city" album by like 6-10 years.
