1001 Albums Summary

One of those albums that grows on you. Not as immediately hooky as some of their later work but some decent tunes.

I agree with the general consensus that R.E.M. haven't really aged well. Not enough going on in most of these songs and lyrics that don't really resonate these days. Orange Crush is pretty good though.

I can see why this album was so big, extreme 90s energy with a lot of anger that you didn't really see in this poppy sort of style. While it's definitely a good album overall the instrumentation sounds of its time, and Alanis' singing (which is good don't get me wrong) doesn't work for me so I can't give it full marks. If it's a 5 for you I get it though

This is up my alley for sure. Didn't really listen to a lot of LCD Soundsystem at the time outside of North American Scum and All My Friends, and now I'm wondering why. Never got round to it I guess

Bob Dylan is an artist best covered and not directly listened to, like how they have to look at the melted down core of the Chernobyl nuclear plant via a series of mirrors to prevent radiation exposure, except instead of radiation it's harmonicas.

Another influential album that's notable for its place in history and how it laid the groundwork for other genres. An interesting listen but I don't do enough drugs to consider going back for another go at any of it.

A nice enough listen. The title track is pretty classic and while there's lots of talent on display it didn't speak to me enough that I'd go deep in the Van Morrison back catalogue.

Can't go wrong with Stevie, Higher Ground is an all-timer

Not quite my type of thing but some undeniably classic dance tracks in here. Feel like it might grow on me if I relisten

It's biggest problem is that it is just too long and it doesn't justify it. I've also always struggled with the maximalist style of singing Christina favours but that's a me issue. I was surprised at how much I liked Make Over, that's been added to rotation. I had to skip Beautiful because it was so incredibly overplayed that every drop of potential enjoyment I may have derived from it has long been squeezed out.

Wasn't into this at first but I found myself enjoying the weirder, more experimental back half of the album.

Easy 5. Sometimes a weird guy makes a perfect album.

Hard to argue with Your Own Personal Cheeses

Hard to rate due to how ubiquitous Sinatra is as a singer, but he did offer to have Woody Allen's legs broken so I can't in good conscience rate this any lower than a 3.

Listenable and Mick is a good singer but it all feels very corporate, if that makes sense to say. Feels like all the rough edges have been sanded off for maximum appeal. Also bit weird that Mich Hucknall ranked ethnicities by coolness that one time.

Coldplay do one type of song pretty well
