Grew up listening to ATCQ, my least favorite of their albums but still has lots of gold.
Always felt that tribe was one of the easiest entries into hip hop. Low key, smart word play, excellent sampling and instrumental. Well produced.
Hits are basically side a, the rest of the album isn't bad but largely relegates itself to good background music.
I got into war the same as many others, spill the wine and low rider. War started with eric burdon (of the animals) and became their own band after a few albums. Personally I prefer their first attempt w/o burdon to the world is a ghetto. World is a ghetto has a few hits cisco kid, low rider. The commentary on the tracks is self explained in the album title so there should be no real surprise. Musically I find most tracks exist but fail to hook me. It's good background but that defeats the point of the intent.
Phenomenal album, top 5 favorite dylan record. Was always more of a Dylan fan post going electric. I appreciate the folk days but a bit lacking for me.
Say what you want about his voice, dylans appeal has always been in the poetry, music, and then delivery. Taking the context of the time where music is, where dylan was just a year before its easy to appreciate what this album was doing. Moving music from a safer/more whitewashed to a grittier exploring approach. The entire album is a commentary about silliness of modern life
like a rolling stone sets the stage, easily the "hit" on the album, i always hear a hammond and retort it needs more hammond, thats the only negative to this one. Ballad of a thin man, excellent haunting tune. Queen Jane approximately ❤️, perfect commentary on the plastic, materialistic world weve since entered. Highway 61 revisted, flawless. Tight and careless at the same time, whistle *chefs kiss*.
Very reflective of the mid 90s. Grew up when this album came out, familiar with the radio hits but never gave the album a listen. Very well produced sound and album, again leans into the trendy sound of the time. Vow and Supervixen stand out as non hit songs worth a spin .
Start with, im a huge who fan. Hell made my own who tee shirt when they reunited in 96 to don at the show. Of the two full rock operas, Tommy is the worst. It's a bit pretentious at times, some of the tracks are very weak failing to showcase anyone's talents. It was ground breaking and created a bit of a run on other bands trying to do their own.
This is a personal annoyance, but every live album they release is a live version of them playing Tommy and its tired.
Stand out tracks: amazing journey, sparks, christmas, acid queen, pinball wizard, go to the mirror, smash the mirror, im free, were not gonna take it. 10 out of 24 tracks.
