This Is Fats Domino
by Fats Domino
1984
by Van Halen
My first five-star album. It has the right number of songs, a clear prelude, and a proper closing. Nothing feels excessive or unfinished. Van Halen sounds complete here: energetic without being exhausting, confident without sounding pretentious. The album defined a generation, and Eddie Van Halen—one of my favorite guitarists—turns virtuosity into pure musical language. There’s really nothing to explain. It’s simply complete.
