Ellington at Newport by Duke Ellington
Jan 03 2026

-3 for the screaming screeching trumpet sound that made this hard to listen to +1 for the audio of them dispelling a riot at the end of the show. That rocks

Melodrama by Lorde
Jan 06 2026

The same standard breakup makeup love songs, but with a self awareness to it acknowledging how cliche it all is. I mean, it’s called melodrama, people! Were you never 19? Wrap it in some of Jack Antonoff’s best production (that’s saying something) and you’ve got a winner. I love Charli XCX

McCartney by Paul McCartney
Jan 07 2026

I had more fun learning the Beatles lore surrounding this album than I did actually listening to it. It was fine and perfectly average - the definition of a 3 star

Jan 08 2026

Hard to not love old school groovy punk like this. These guys were just out there having a good time. Albums like this are what make me glad I started this challenge - I’d never heard of minutemen and never would have heard this gem otherwise!

Hounds Of Love by Kate Bush
Jan 09 2026

I think I like the idea of this album more than I like actually listening to it. A gothic pop concept album complete with Latin chanting? Should be right up my alley, but it didn’t grab me like I wanted it to. Props to Kate Bush for doing something different - she was well ahead of her time. Reminds me of Ethel Cain! Might need to revisit in October

Red Headed Stranger by Willie Nelson
Jan 10 2026

Normally I love a concept album, but something about the genre of this one makes it feel a bit like a caricature of itself. I feel like I’m inside a western. I’m sure it’s for someone, but it’s not for me!

Machine Gun Etiquette by The Damned
Jan 11 2026

a shot of adrenaline. This is what I’m fuckin talking about - my first 5 star of this challenge

Bitches Brew by Miles Davis
Jan 13 2026

Not sure what emotion he was going for with this one. Anxiety? Disorientation? Either way it’s incomprehensible

Bug by Dinosaur Jr.
Jan 14 2026

Clearly an influence for some of the modern day punk/grunge/emo I listen to outside of this challenge, but doesn’t connect for me. I could do without the full song of incomprehensible yelling. I appreciate what they were doing, but I won’t be listening again

#1 Record by Big Star
Jan 15 2026

What a gem! Impressively timeless, great production. Thirteen was a joy to listen to for the first time, the the rest of the album was strong as well. It’s beyond me how these guys didn’t make it big

Jan 17 2026

Was a bit nervous when this one popped up, just because I’ve heard so many folks rave about it, and I was worried I’d walk away thinking it was over hyped. Happy to have been proven wrong! This whole album is dripping in influence - it seems every artist in the 2000s heard this and immediately wished they had written it. Can’t blame them! My second 5 star of this challenge!

Siamese Dream by The Smashing Pumpkins
Jan 20 2026

Conflicted about this one. Every song sounds pretty much the same to me, but that sound that they all emulate is sick. 3.5 stars, rounding up because I’m feeling nice today
