Realistically this is a strong 3 for me but I also listened to it high while taking a bath, which is i think the most ideal way to listen to it, so a 4 it is!
(I found Vampire Blues kind of hard to get into but I now realize it was supposed to be commenting on the oil industry, which is based, but I was too distracted to his silly way of singing I'm a vampiiiirreeee~ i will try to listen again later)
I am too much of a theatre nerd to not love this, sorry not sorry! Exact amount of over the top I love, and me and Bates do a killer Paradise By The Dashboard Light
My first half-listen I was feeling a 3, as I generally enjoyed it but some of the old school type rapping is not always my favourite, Flavor Flav was distracting, and there were some beats or sound effects that were hard for me to listen to, like what I can only describe as a tea kettle as a main hook for "Rebel Without a Pause". But I paid more attention the second time through and liked it quite a bit despite my small qualms, some great tracks, great lyrics and raps from Chuck D, and obviously influential!
I am debating between a 4 and a 5, I don't know how much I will listen to this afterwards but I love good funk and it was an excellent listen for me
Went straight through me, nothing especially caught my attention but it was a nice listen
Is that a motHER FUCKIN JOJO REFERENCE?!?!
(I don't have much else to say, this album fucking rips dude)
My favourite YouTuber ToddInTheShadows has a running gag on his Trainwreckords/One Hit Wonderland series of smash cutting to the beginning of Smells Like Teen Spirit while describing the video's subject as the newest victim of "Nirvana Killed My Career", as they signaled grunge taking over what kind of rock music would be popular.
And after listening to the album, I get it! This does not feel like a beta version of the grunge that would become widespread, it's fully formed and basically flawless. I am still narrowing down what I consider a 5 or not, but FUCK IT
This is just a great time! For a moment I thought the old school flow would grow old for me, but then when I forget about that and just enjoy these goofy guys having fun, easy to ignore! I mostly know De La Soul from their Gorillaz features, and I love all of them, and I am happy for this incentive to listen to more. POTHOLES IN MY LAWN!!
I claimed I would give a 5 to this before listening because it was my favourite album in middle school, which means it's one of my favourites period on nostalgia alone. I did listen again for due diligence and I will say, it definitely is not perfect - the choice to end the album on Whatshername is baffling, I forgot the r slur and the multiple f slurs (I mean I knew they used it but forgot it was more than in American Idiot), and it's not as cohesive as I thought it was. However, I do still think it's a great album and I will always get turnt at Emo nights when they blast American Idiot or Holiday.
Fun! Better than More Than A Feeling suggested, some rocking stuff, but no real standouts for me
