Metallica by Metallica

The problem I tend to have with Metallica is that they don’t really grab me for extended periods of time. There’s not many songs that they have that I sit and feel genuinely satisfied to have listened to, and this album has a lot of those moments. It’s genuinely solid insofar as it’s well made, well produced, etc., like there’s nothing in here that’s necessarily bad, but only a few songs properly grabbed me (Enter Sandman, Don’t Tread on Me). I think if it was a bit thrashier like their first few albums I would have enjoyed it more.

It's not really grabbing me. Hot For Teacher and House of Pain are highlights. Otherwise not very interesting or exciting (for me).The synth sections are painfully 80s in not a good way. I can see the appeal but it just wasn’t firing off any excitement If it had eruption on it it would lowkey be a 3

Such a classic. Great, dirty, dissonant guitar tones. Territorial Pissings stands head and shoulders above the rest for me, but lots of good songs here (obv. Smells Like Teen Spirit, Come As You Are, Something In The way). I always enjoy a bit of Dave Grohl drumming too, he definitely has it. I enjoy Kurt's screechy vocal moments (again referring particularly to Territorial Pissings), songs that tend towards a bit more quiet I find I don't appreciate as much as a consequence of this (Polly). Endless, Nameless is so violent and punky, great way to finish off the album - I enjoy songs like this that are just indulgently abrasive. I don't know necessarily that I'd have most of this album in regular rotation hence it isn't realistically a 5, but it's still an incredible album, particularly for its time which helped push alternative guitar music after a decade full of new wave and synthy pop (which I do like! It’s just fun to see the currents of music come and go).
