1984 by Van Halen
Apr 03 2026

Gonna be real, this is not the type of music I listen to. I found my music taste with radio 6 dad esque post brexit punk, stretched into indie, and pissed it all away by almost exclusively listening to house music for half of third and all of third year. I'm a zoomer when it comes to music taste I'm a child with a spinny hat and rainbow lollipop. So while I understand Van Halen's prestige and talent, I did not enjoy this album. Not any active hatred (although Hot For Teacher did feel like seeing blackface in an old Looney Tunes cartoon), but i just felt quite numb and sometimes bored basically the whole time. No standout songs I really remember. I recognise Jump but didn't feel psyched I dont know if it's because I never had anyone growing up show me this music at a young age, or anything similar. I don't know if it's because I don't play an instrument so don't have a deeper appreciation of the musical talent. I don't know if I've just listened to too much modern music to subconsciously prefer modern mixing. All I know is I did not enjoy this album. I'd give it a 2.5 but this is a number that rounds down for me, not up.

Nevermind by Nirvana

This is more like it. Hooks you on the first song and doesn't let up until the last, which by the time you go to check the track length, is done and straight back to Smells like Teen Spirit (if you have it on repeat like I did lol) I'm aware as this list goes on my reviews will get more nuanced, but at the time of writing I genuinely stand by my score. An incredible album.

Would give this a 3.5 but probably fairer to round down than up. This was an enjoyable listen, the first song went into a playlist of mine, but the rest of the album unfortunately sounded too similar. None of the other songs really had their own identity per-say, as good as they all were. An enjoyable listen, but one im unlikely to do much again given the plentitude of more distinct albums. It's good music though.

Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix

Adored giving this another listen. This took me right back to sixth form. Had a mate who loved just smoking a joint and jamming to this music in a tiny back garden. We'd head over to his house any time we did acid and he'd put stuff on like this and it just created this fantastic atmosphere. One time we went up to his room and he put on Baba O Reilly and I remember thinking that song lasted 4 hours and it was glorious. Was fun to microdose that feeling at work while thinking we were all gonna get nuked tomorrow. Giving this a 4 as its slightly outside my usual tastes, but id do 4.5 if I could.

All Things Must Pass by George Harrison

Honestly this shot from a 3 to a 4.5 while I was listening to it. I didn't finish it and genuinely wonder if it would have kept creeping up to a 5. Actually fantastic stuff

A very good album, just not really my cup of tea. I'd give it a 3.5 as it was enjoyable to listen to and well put together but the songs started to meld together for me. Not the fault of the album - just my tastes selectively coming to that conclusion lol.
