Unexpected instrumentals featuring synth pads and some vocals. Other tracks groove but also feature synth textures maybe experimental at the time. Enjoyed the album. Favorite tracks: Subterraneans, Warszawa, Art Decade
A very immersive listen. It’s amazing how the collective group moves from contemplative, to grooving, to urgent, to lonesome. I love when music inspires you to create a story or narrative. This album does that. Probably could not listen to this album too often, but there will be times when I’d welcome it. Favorite track: Spanish Key.
Golden Years is a classic and among Bowie’s best songs. However I couldn’t connect with the rest of this album. The dramatic flair in Bowie’s vocals didn’t match the grooves in a way that resonated with me. Top song: Golden Years
Whoever picked the room to record this album deserves a lot of credit. A very “live” space that lets the musician’s chemistry and skill shine through.
“Chan Chan” was a hit when this album came out, and I never listened much beyond that song. But this whole album is fantastic from start to finish. The last few tracks are just as strong and enjoyable as the first. Top songs: De Camino a la Vereda, Tu Que Has Hecho?, Orgullecida, Chan Chan
A fun listen with two massive hits: We Got The Beat, and Our Lips Are Sealed. Automatic is a track that surprised me with its more dramatic theme and associated rhythmic change. Top tracks: We Got The Beat, Our Lips Are Sealed, Automatic
Knew nothing about Nick Drake before listening. I like the light, airy vocals and was surprised by the depth / breadth of the backing orchestral arrangements. Wouldn’t surprise me if Beck drew any inspiration from Drake for his Sea Change album. A pleasant listen for the right moment.
I’m a sucker for a light, Latin, lounge kind of vibe. Great album for the right mood. The Girl From Ipanema is an all-timer. Getz sounds tremendous. Top track: Girl From Ipanema.
Electronica / House music. Early impression was poor but I became more interested as the album progressed. Reminiscent of Ambassadors Of Funk, The Prodigy, etc throughout. I can understand how this album could have made a big impression at the time. Generally the album was good and held my attention. Top tracks: Song Of Life, Storm 3000.
80s esoteric Brit-pop, did not enjoy. The synth rhythms and programming were probably mind blowing in 1981, so credit there. Cold war angst throughout the album, did not interest me. I stopped halfway thru.
