Maggot Brain by Funkadelic
Sep 19 2026

As much or more of a post-political psychedelic rock album than a funk one. Every single second is enjoyable - musicality, warmth, humor exuded by every member of the band. Classic.

You Want It Darker by Leonard Cohen
Sep 20 2026

The music performed well if not original whatsoever, while Cohen’s words are intelligent and his delivery largely the same between tracks. However the value of this “impending death” album is Cohen’s attitude toward dying - matter of fact and poetic, humorous but serious. It’s an oddly uplifting album about recognizing the end of life. There are certainly worse ways to die.

Elvis Presley by Elvis Presley
Sep 22 2026

Some strong material, a couple of dud songs (looking at you “Tutti Frutti”).The King would make better music soon enough.

Raising Hell by Run-D.M.C.
Sep 23 2026

The energy here is fun because the lyrics are sincerely goofy and deadly serious. They manage to keep the hype rolling through 40 minutes, even if this is essentially an album of three standout crossover singles surrounded by relatively ordinary Run DMC tracks.

Guero by Beck
Sep 24 2026

If you’re one of those casual Beck listeners, like me, who loves Mellow Gold, likes Odelay just fine, and thought that romantic disappointment destroyed the man on Sea Change, and henceforth only heard his radio singles, you’d be forgiven for not knowing that this is actually an excellent album front to end. His production is eclectic and punchy, and the songwriting is rock solid. Once the big radio singles announce their presence, the deep cuts take over and the album starts to shine.

Tidal by Fiona Apple
Sep 26 2026

Never connected with Fiona Apple’s music, unfortunately. Doesn’t help that she’s been singing about the same thing for over 20 years.

Out of Step by Minor Threat
Sep 28 2026

DC hardcore pioneers, not their best in my opinion, and a solid runway toward Fugazi

Sep 30 2026

Some good slick funk throughout, but Jay Kay is also the kind of guy who sings about “revolution” - and says it over 100 times in a single song - as if he just learned the trendy word and figures it’ll be the coolest cat party ever.
