It's so rare to be able clearly compare ideas with how they're executed. As a bigger fan of the *other* offshoot from Rocket from the Tombs, I always felt Dead Boys stripped away the uniqueness of the compositions and created something overly straightforward. Not to say I don't like it, but it could have been so much more.
Even as a post-rock fan, I found this boring when it came out. But listening again now, I've come around. It's still pretty one-dimensional to my ears, but the compositions and mood are nice.
I liked the amorphous, quieter parts (Pearl in Oyster in particular). 18 tracks and 76 minutes of run time is a lot to digest and pick apart and this album has worn my patience a bit. It's not bad, but I probably won't revisit as a whole.
Seems like it should be right up my alley along with Sebadoh, GBV, Superchunk and the other sloppy fun of the 90's, but this didn't bring anything new to the table which is surprising for an album 10-15 years behind the curve. Not bad, just not good enough.
