In Between Dreams is the third studio album by singer-songwriter Jack Johnson, released by Brushfire Records in the United States on March 1, 2005. The album received generally mixed reviews from music critics. However, the album achieved considerable commercial success. The album cover depicts a mango tree, referring to the Mango Tree, the studio where In Between Dreams was recorded. There is also a reference to the mango tree in "Better Together". At Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 100 to reviews from mainstream publications, the album received an average score of 58, based on 15 reviews. MacKenzie Wilson of AllMusic describes Johnson as "stick[ing] with what he does best" on the album; this has led some critics to characterize the album as feeling "safe" or unambitious. However, Barry Walters of Rolling Stone argues that Johnson explored new content with more politically minded tracks like "Crying Shame" and "Staple It Together".
Hey f you - I love Jack Johnson
I hate this sort of music. What would you call it? White guy reggae? Who cares. They billed it as music for surfers a lot, but I surfed all through the 90s and 2000s and you know what we listened to? PENNYWISE. This was just fluffy shit. Anything that gets mostly described as "chill" should go in the fucking bin. This music's real intended audience was hot German and French chicks on beach holidays, and as is totally normal, men will say and do almost anything for a chance with a tanned, blonde, easygoing gap year backpacker. I am ashamed to say I pretended to like Jack Johnson, Xavier Rudd, Ben Harper etc etc all just to try and fuck those chicks. It didn't even really work. Anyway, because lots of hot chicks liked this crap, it kinda became the unofficial soundtrack to backpacker hostel bars, vanlifing, visiting waterfalls, hanging out at the beach etc. It was a terrible time to be alive. I'm sure whatever hot, bronzed, European tourists in their early 20s listen to now is WAY more annoying, and I'm sure there are guys pretending to like THAT every bit as much as I pretended I was a Jack Johnson, ankle bracelet, hemp shirt surf hippie. Pennywise for fuckin EVA!! 1/5.
This is a classic and fantastic album from one of the chillest artists. Jack Johnson keeps it nice and simple with most of his music but the ability to create a positive and catchy tune is talent. This album is definitely his best because it has everything Jack Johnson does so well. Fun songs, love songs, songs about being better. It’s what makes his music enjoyable and it’ll always be worth a listen. 8.6/10
I’ve listened to this album in the past - it’s very soothing and nice. I enjoyed it again today. Maybe not something that held my attention for a long time, but I got no problem with something nice being on this list.
Nice relaxed folky singer-songwriter album. Starts strong, but in the end it’s just a lot of simular songs (instrumentation, tempo, melody).
I have often happily listened to Jack Johnson over the years, although I've never heard this whole album. It's as wonderful as banana pancakes.
Rating: 9/10 Best songs: Never know, Better together, Good people, Sitting waiting wishing, Crying shame
Wholesome music. Very relaxing
I love the Jack Johnson chill. It feels like a sunny afternoon island vibe. Though "Staple It Together" could be dropped from the album, i really enjoy the conscientious chill vibe of the album. Songs like "Better Together", "Good People" and "Crying Shame" are some of the best.
Light as air and goes down smooth. One cannot help but be happy when Jack is crooning. Which, I can understand any criticisms about that, but I like being happy.
Ultimate Frisbee. Before we get started, a quick announcement, be on the lookout for Ziggy, my escaped pet gecko in a fleece jester hat. Ziggy's unique in that he can both roll and smoke doobies, and he is very much at large. Vegan cookies. That went down easier than a frosty hochata. Now another quick announcement, please keep a look out for my pet ferret, Mr. Coconut. You'll know him by his Hawaiian shirt and sunglasses, and of course, he can roll and smoke doobies. Well, this has been fun. One last announcement. Keep your eyes peeled for my pet Komodo Dragon, Professor Munchie. Note his trademark fedora and Tiva sport sandals. If you do encounter Munchie, do not buy weed from him, as it is laced with PCP.
Delightful. Curious George-core 5 The white line on the top of the album cover is so distracting though And theres no real feeling of progression 4
Jack Johnson's great. We used to listen to a lot of his music when our youngest son was about 3 years old, because of the Curious George soundtrack. Our son loved his music, but every time he said his name he said "Jackson Johnson", and so that's how Jack Johnson will be forever known in our house. Anyway, this is great stuff, I'm glad someone put it on the list. 4 stars.
I love love love this guy! This album and 'Better Together' in particular. Reminds me of happy times. Watching 'Curious George' with my kids..... So chill and eaasy going. Perfect.
One of those albums so overplayed and owned by everyone at the time, but looking back it hasn’t aged too badly. Deserves its place on this list.
Folk rock, acoustic rock. Ni fu ni fa.
I remember listening to Johnson's soundtrack for the Curious George film when I was younger, and while I may have outgrown my tolerance for most singer-songwriter music I think this guy has earned a pass. This LP starts out soft and slow, but gradually builds in some great instrumentation to keep things varied and lively. Johnson's vocals are somewhat limited in range (some dynamics or tonal contrast would be nice), but he's done an excellent job composing tracks around his dulcet tones to bolster his vocal performance.
Good natured and easy on the ears. Shades of Paul Simon. I appreciate how concise this album is, short and sweet. A lot of artists would have dragged this over an hour and ruined it. Fave Songs: Sitting, Waiting, Wishing; Do You Remember; No Other Way; Crying Shame; Better Together; Banana Pancakes
Honestly, I listened to 15 minutes of this and just turned it off. It was even that bad, I just wasn’t interested today. Not the vibe I was going for in the moment and I didn’t wanna subject myself to it when I wasn’t in the mood. I’m sure it’s okay.
This was one of those albums that was huge when it was released and I loved it. I desperately wanted to like banana pancakes (the food, not the song) but sadly I still don’t. Listening again it was like an old friend who I had lost contact with, and on reconnecting I realised I hadn’t missed them at all.
Had this CD in the family collection at some point, along with the Curious George soundtrack album which got played a lot while I was at home with a young child. He's a little, you know, nicey-nice but these days maybe the softer side deserves extra play. And fond memories.
Yeah chill one
Difficult not to like the infectious joy. However not strong throughout
It happened to me at night, I was listening to it and I didn't even feel like I was listening, the truth is it's boring, however I don't consider it terrible, it's just not for me.
If you like chill surfer folk, this might be for you.
Oh God. I worked for HMV the year this came out and this would be one of the five albums picked for the stereo every day. It still gives me PTSD. He seems like he'd be a lovely guy to hang out with, so long as he doesn't have his guitar, but the music is possibly the reason the term "toxic positivity" was coined. Spent the time I was re-engaging with this after 20 years out of body waiting for it to be over.
