1001 Albums Summary

This wasn't quite what I was expecting. But I also didn't enjoy it beyond the first 20 seconds or so. Too bombastic for me.

I assumed this was one bloke – the kind of bloke who turns up at parties and plays their guitar to get attention. The fact that it takes so any of them to make such a basic noise is a surprise. Every track sounds the same, and I think it is mean to be funny, but it's hard to tell. Good for them for persuading someone to put this out, I guess, but I bailed after about 4 songs.

Dear Hunter, No. Overblown stadium sing-a-long indie.

Honestly, I think I expected a bit more. I remember liking one or two of their songs at the time and this is bouncy enough. But it got a bit repetitive after a few songs. And I don't like the voice, even though i couldn't tell you why.

Whiny and morose. Not for me.

This wasn't quite what I expected, having heard the name but not the music. Maybe I was mixing them up with someone like World Of Twist. Quirky than I imagined, it has the feel of independent music of the time, prefacing artists like Clap Your Hands. I would probably have loved this at the time, but it sounded dated now, to these ears. Have heard worse, but nothing really grabbed me as it trundled along to its conclusion.

Terrible name, terrible artwork. Given that, the music itself was more interesting than I expected. Lots of influences thrown in there, making it sound interesting, rather than confused, as they somehow all pull together. An edited single album would have been better, but given the length of the tracks, spreading out a little makes some kind of sense. Not bad.

Pleasant, not earth-shattering. Like the slight wonkiness.

One of the many reasons I would never go to a piano bar. bailed during 2nd song. Awful.

I don't mind a bit of quirky electro-pop, but an hour + was way more than I needed. This started off bouncy and fun, but got a bit repetitive after a few tracks. Good, but not great.

This was a journey! I knew the name, but not the band. Absolutely loved this - crazy noise. A messy playful bundle of strangeness, I'm off to seek out more Boredoms now.

Thankfully only 23 minutes long, although I think I managed about 5. One-note dreary balladeering. Not for me.

Bland and obvious.

Turgid. Gave up after about 3 songs.

Odd mix of overblown proggy-ness and early 80s styling, with synths & fretless bass thrown in there seemingly at random. The 80s stuff was a nice nostalgia trip, but this was too indulgent to hold my attention for long. Better than I hoped, but as pompous as I expected in the main.

Super indeed. A lot of the backing here is recognisable from Perry's seventies Black Ark output, which made this even more enjoyable, and a great intro to his amazing production work. A particular highlight is Dub Along and its bittersweet vocal refrains, but this is a brilliant record from start to finish.

Abut all I got from this is that there is a genre called 'post-hardcore' and that it's not a genre I like. Obvious, ploddy and shouty.

Load of ballads. Not for me.

Bland R&B. Did nothing for me.

Wacky. Not in a good way. To be fair, I have never met a ska punk band that I like. And this continues that trend.

Stadium indie, mixed with MOR rock. I love the Tennessee Fire album, but this was two discs too long.

Folk. Not for me.

Managed about 3 songs before bailing. Obvious and samey.

Jack of all trades...

This is a great album. As good as the first, if not better. But it wasn't the first, and is in the same vein, so somehow it doesn't seem as impactful. The songs are great, the sound is too. I like it. A lot.

Didn't mind this but nothing really jumped out at me. Peasant, but not spectacular.

I don't know if it's good or bad that I can't understand the lyrics, but the music wasn't moving me. Bailed fairly early on this one.

I almost bailed in this,. But then Summer Breeze came on. Fairly obvious heavy rock in places, but the odd flash of humour saves this a little. And a few less obvious sound textures. Not one I'd rush to play again, but not as bad as first feared.

RHCP have a LOT to answer for. Terrible 'artwork'.

Inoffensive, bland, aimless noodling. Reminds me a bit of Mogwai. Not a compliment.

Fairly standard rock fare. REM-lite. Not my thing.
