Album 1, 1000 to go! What a place to begin!
Having had the Beatles playing in the background when growing up (courtesy of parents), we had the double "Blue Album" CD covering their most well known hits from the period 1967-70 so familiar with songs from the latter end of their band career. It's great to listen in full to some of their earlier poppy/folky tracks, which I didn't really spend a lot of time listening to when younger. Regardless of their two distinct former and latter sounding periods as a band, the Beatles will always have a special place in my memories.
Gave this a listen to on my morning run and will definitely be saving it for future runs. Being really only familiar with their hit song "Jump", it was cool to listen to their early works. The cover of the Kinks "You Really Got Me" was a surprise and also incredible guitar solo riff with the instrumental "Eruption".
First album from the 1980s.. Being a pretty big fan of music from this decade, I was familiar with their hits like Poison Arrow and The Look of Love. But hadn't really heard any of their other songs from their debut album so was appreciated to get this.. Very typical 80s sounds, e.g. base slapping, synth keys, etc.. Not my go to for 80s music but toes were definitely tapped whilst listening to!
Never really gave Portishead the time of day when first getting into music.. even after attending uni in Bristol..Tbh, not the greatest fan of their slow tempo beat sounds but will definitely save the album for future listening. I think I can see myself grow to appreciating them.
Some really nice songs here. I remember my Mum playing this album quite a lot when it first came out, so it was nice to revisit from beginning to end. Guy Garvey has such a recognisable and easy to listen to voice, Favourite of mine has to be The Loneliness of a Tower Crane Driver, such great sounds and lyrics!
Gave the complete album a couple of listen throughs and didn't really click for me. Not opposed to the funk/R'n'B genre but majority of songs just weren't doing it. Highlights tho for me were the opening track and Just My Imagination.. those did get stuck in my head.
Such an awesome album with some classic, killer 80s tracks. What's not to love?!
First album and artist in this list I'd never come across before.. some pretty interesting Afrobeat sounds and cool to learn about him being a real pioneer in this music genre.. wouldn't normally listen to this kind of stuff in rotation, but glad to have expanded my music knowledge!
A really nice album with some sweet acoustic songs.. Crazy that this was Dylan's 15th. I hadn't really given his works a lot of listen to in the past and tbh I'd never heard of any of the tracks on this album prior to listening. Will defiantly save to my catalogue :-)
Just couldn't get into this album..not sure prog-rock is my kinda thing...
Nice, can always listen to a bit of Winehouse whining on about her ex-boyfriend! Was.. Still is a fantastic album and I think she really helped usher in others like Duffy and Adele later
Only ever heard Winwood's two most notable hits - Higher Love and Valerie - prior to listening to this album. He definitely has a unique "80's sound" that resonates through all his songs, be that his voice or multi-instruments (which I was surprise to learn he played all of on this album). I never had him as multi-instrumental talented, so big new found appreciation there. I think this album kind of grew on me with a few listens through..(also found the album artwork distinctive). Flet the opening track - While You See A Chance - had a nice positive and upbeat in tone, which fed into the rest of the album. 3/5 from me, and will gladly listen to again.
Isn't the typically genre of music I'd listen to but that's the while point of this project.. the only track I recognise is the 3rd - Sugar - since this was part of a phenomenal soundtrack for the 2000 video game MTV Sports: Skateboarding (along with other tracks from Cypress Hill, Pennywise and Goldfinger). This is definitely a genre of music I'd have to be in the mood to listen to again. I can appreciate it but was just never big into the heavy metal/alt-rock scene. 3/5 from me
Love him or hate him, Lennon has a decent mixture of songs on this album. Especially liked the interchange of piano based tracks versus guitar heavy ones (Crippled Inside as opposed to Don't Wanna be a Soldier Mama). Can definitely hear Spector's influence!
Really great album, my Dad is big fan who introduced me to them so will always have fond memories hearing them. Honestly, what an opening track but listening to the whole thing in full is really nice experience :-)
I have honestly never heard of this guy before seeing his name/this album come up here.. But then as I listened I could definitely hear Oceans 11/12/13m etc.. sounds.. and saw he had done the music for this trilogy. As for the actual music, it's kind of OK.. like trip-hop electronica with lots of samples used from various places. Not something I'd normally listen to but glad I could expand personal music horizons a bit!
Loud, screamy rock/punk music from the 60s..not really my cup of tea I have to be honest.. BUT.. made me realised listening to this album that I actually know a lot of their tracks simply from being used in so much other media like covers, adverts, TV + movies.."Do you Love Me".."Roll Over Beethoven", "Have Love Will Travel, "Money". Good thing, none of the tracks overstay their welcome, just all kinda merge into one sound from one track to the next!
One of those bands I'd always kind of heard about but not really listened to any of their stuff. In my head they were always predominantly a 90s band but was surprised to see they originally formed in 1981!
I guess what interests me the most listening to this album is hearing who they might have been influenced by vs who Sonic Youth went on to later influence; tracing that line of punk, experimental new wave through to 90s alt-rock grunge, i.e. Velvet Underground, Sex Pistols, Patti Smith -> Nirvana
Never been a big fan of "drum'n'bass" and this album does nothing for me.. overly long, repetitive beat tracks... DNF the album
