_20% Amnesia_ was probably my favorite song. Really disliked the opening song as an opening. The production is raw, but not in a good way.
It's the Beatles. If you like the early Beatles you'll probably like this album at least a little bit. Not a lot of "hits". If you had to pick just 1 album from the Beatles to put on a 1001 list, this would not be it. The last song, "Money (That's That I Want)" slaps. Seems like that was the trend in this era, to create a banger exit song. Their previous album closed with "Twist & Shout". 3/5
The layers 😳 Headphones might actually do this album a disservice, at least on some of the beginning tracks - need some Hi-Fi speakers and a bean bag :-) Really liked the "H2O Blues". I wish Genius had better annotations for this song. Good album, but I don't see myself listening to it a lot (if at all) in the future. 3/5
Had to skip the 3rd track. And the 5th track. The orig release only had 6 tracks, so I only reviewed those. Velvet Underground has _way_better songs than anything on this album. There's actually some good stuff on the Deluxe release. 1/5
The songs I liked most had the least listens according to the Spotify data. I see the appeal, not really my jam though. Not sure why it's a must listen to album. It is pretty solid start to finish, so I guess that's kind of rare. Oddly there are a lot of songs where I start to think I like it, then right as I start thinking that, the song changes and I like it less. 3.5/5
Liked Summertime and Turtle Blues. As I get older, I'm less into Joplin screams. Good album, not sure I would pick it to randomly play, but I wouldn't hit skip on most songs. The whole here is probably greater than the sum of its parts. Very cohesive. 3.5-4/5
Love the opening track. Skipped the 'Stop Your Sobbing' track. 'Kid' was one of their top hits - never heard it before. Have never really listened to the lyrics for 'Brass In Pocket' before. Personally this is about a 3 for me, but I can see why it's on this list, and it probably deserves a 4. Just not something I'll probably listen to again.
I forgot to take notes on this album, but I remember thinking it was good chill background music. I actually listened to it twice to see if anything stood out. I think there was some song I liked more than others, but nothing really jumped out. I think this was a debut album, which is impressive, which might be why it's on a top 1,000 list.
Took a 2nd listen to appreciate. Kind of funk jazz that _should_ be in my wheelhouse, but I was kind of meh on the first listen. Second time around I found more to like. I could see myself listening on occasion when I'm in the right mood, but don't foresee this getting a lot of rotation in my account. I could see how this might have been kind of groundbreaking in it's time. This feels like Vermont or Portland Jazz. Not sure if the 2 live tracks on the end were part of the original release, but they were some of my favorites. 3/5
Didn't really make an impression on me. 2/5
Needed to put on my "good" headphones for this. Hard to hear with decent, but older wired set. Strange. I'm a well known Radiohead hater. This album was pretty decent for the first half, then "(Nice Dream)" drove it off the side of a cliff. "Just" kept throwing me off because there's a riff that's very reminiscent of a Beatles riff that swings into 90's ___ rock. Not a bad song, just distracting. Still not a Radiohead fan. 3/5
Off the first track I would have never guessed Stones. Loves the blues influence. Had to immediately listen to the Etta James version of "I just want to" because that's who I most associate with that song. "Tell Me" is by far the weakest song. Decent album, again not sure why it's essential. Great example of a solid debut maybe? 3/5
Those horns in 'Sir Duke' always get me. I've listened to this album start to finish several times. I don't think it's a perfect album, but it's really good. On the verge of being 4 stars for me, but the songs I like are so good that I have to give it 5 stars.
