Listening to this you can hear how much bands like The Libertines owe to Mark E Smith
The Jam at the peak of their punky powers before they went all soft and jazzy 😂. “David Watts” = freaking great tune!
Excited to recognize a couple of songs on here (the shake one and bad blood), but otherwise i had a hard time actively listening. It just faded into background music. Perfectly charming bubble gum pop but just didn’t do anything for me.
Trina: “she’s awful what’s wrong with her voice”
Utter shite
Couldn’t finish it
The return of southern rawk. For me songs ranged from catchy to inoffensive. Surprising number of singles seem to come off this record but I can’t see myself reaching for it. If I want that sound l would just throw on Exile on Main St. Also, didn’t sound anything like the original Black Flag version of “Jealous Again”…
Very cool and chill album. Whatsherface has a beautiful voice, but I really dig the dub-influenced tracks and instrumentals. Actually went round twice in the mix but had to change coz we were driving and it got dangerously mesmeric. I’d only ever heard Mezzanine before (long time fav) so silly I’ve never dig deeper into their catalog.
Billy Corgan needs a good editor. Album starts really strong then just kinda fades & drags. So much so that at one point I asked “why are we listening to this song again?” It was the same song - the first time round. Still strong drumming and some fun noisy geetah.
Listened but it was a loud room with everyone talking over each other (including some talking about the album). But I enjoyed what I heard and I’m pretty sure I’ve listened to this album before. That said the fact that it didn’t make it into heavy rotation tells me I wasn’t *that* impressed. 3-stars because the margaritas were good
Finally a record I actually own - on vinyl no less (thank you Giles)! Swing baby, and swing hard and hot. Smoking solos and crazy tempo
I dug this album on the second listen more than the first. And since it was playing on Spotify it rolled into their other albums as I was working. White Denim is a new discovery for me and will be digging deeper
Only really preciously familiar with the hit Common People of which I’m a big fan so daft i haven’t paid enough attn to the rest of the record. Getting bits of Roxy music and Bryan ferry. Then suddenly Nick cave. Some great lyrics that made me want to go back and listen more closely. Only reason not 4 is cos I’m feeling too music slutty giving them out too freely. Probably coz I’m 🗿
My musical attn was so thoroughly focused elsewhere that I pretty much missed britpop first go round. Enjoying learning. Dig the combo of noisy guitars with just enough reference to kinks-esque pastoral quintessential Britishness. Review written 1/3 way through the album. Let’s see if it changes…🤘Chemical World 🤘Advert is a lovely hommage to buzzcocks.
I see they’re trying something different here. Dig the use of strings and the beats were alright I just didn’t really care for most of the singers. MCs ans rappers weee alright. But honestly even at it’s best this isn’t my cuppa music
As I meant to write under the Dylan review, but just as pertinent here: who am I to judge the genius of Messrs Cash and Zimmerman? San Quinten is a little less finished than Folsom, but feels all the more real. And Freewheelin’ might not be my fav Dylan but there’s no denying its importance.
I came late to Zep - only in my early college daze did I start to listen to their albums as opposed to whatever happened to be on the radio. Funny coincidence - right around the time I started smoking weed… Anyhoo, what a fucking kickass rekkid. Sure they’re ripping off old blue tracks but they just plain kill it. And this is before they became a parody of themselves. Top marks all around
In 10th grade my parents spotted this album among my meager collection and announced “we don’t want that smut in our house!” I protested that they didn’t know what they were talking about and hadn’t even heard the record. Well, mum, dad and young Nick sat down to take in Malcolm McClaren’s handiwork. We made it to track 2 (“Bodies” with its “fuck this and fuck that fuck it all the fuck out of the fucking brat…”) and screeech off came the needle and there went my budding punk rock record collection. Moving forward I kept Dead Kennedys albums hidden in Blondie sleeves. Learned that lesson… So yeah, special place in my black heart for this gem. Sure it’s all artifice and what not (“ever feel like you’ve been had”) but it doesn’t matter. The snotty joy that these snarled songs brought to my disaffected youth gave me hope that others out there felt as alienated as I did. Listening to this I am reminded of the words of D.Boon in History Lesson Part 2:
“Our band could be your life
Real names'd be proof
Me and Mike Watt played for years
Punk rock changed our lives”
(I’m sure we’ll get to that record eventually). Punk rock changed my life. This one is in my all time top 10. God save the queen!
It’s like not unpleasant waiting room music at a dentist that you don’t mind seeing because she uses lots of nitrous oxide.
This is super fun and funny. I guess I don’t know Mr Perry’s deep cuts coz this totally sounds like a dude trying to find his voice. Am I Elvis Costello? Steely Dan? Leonard Cohen? And then, out of nowhere American Girl. 100% his own voice. Pretty fuckin cool. Miss you Tom.
