Very chill and very surprised I didn't know about it previously. Definitely see it's influence in the likes of Dangermouse, later J5, and more. This is literally the textbook on how to properly use samples.
After having listened to it only once, no songs specifically stick out in my head as memorable. But I enjoyed it and it was s good listen.
A forgotten classic! Lot's of good songs. Probably good to listen to with Riker at some point relatively soon (explicit lyrics only in the last few songs).
It's not 4... But it's still a classic. Immigrant Song FTW!
Another classic. I prefer "forgot about dre" but this one is still worthy to be on this list.
Previous to this recommendation, I only know this artist/album for "Song 2". Currently incomplete listen (at track 7 - "You're So Great"). Very moody, and not really my jam. I feel as though this album only made it to this prestige solely on the merit of "Song 2", which isn't all that far-fetched considering the song's ubiquity, and we are considering the most influential albums here, not necessarily the best. As I write - Track 8 "Death of a Party" is a little bit better than some of the last couple of tracks. We'll see if the second half is enough to lead to me to give the album better than 2 stars. *Morgan Freeman Voice* : The second half, indeed, was not good enough to rate the album over 2 stars.
Not a huge fan. It's very early-digital-experimental. That stuff's not my favorite to begin with. I gotta be honest, I'm not really sure what world this ends up on a 1,000 all times album list that isn't "The dumbest 1,000 albums of all time".
I'm at track 7. Really like the vibe so far. I would have to be in a certain mood to want to listen to this, but it's nice. I will say, though, I just thought to myself, "geez, this is an extremely long song", only to look up and see it was at track 6 and track 1 wasn't like 25 minutes long... Certainly a noticeable change between tracks 5 and 6, though. Personally, I particularly like that dude turned the top floor of a hotel into a recording studio for this. There's certainly some live-ness to the sounds that you wouldn't get in most treated recording studios. It wouldn't work for everything, but it does on this, for sure.
Very tonally pleasant. Classic background vocal recording tracks. Was nice to go back in time to when drum sets were recorded in mono and hard panned. Lots of hard panning in general, experimenting with the stereo field. Something many modern recordings don’t seem to do much of anymore.

Very deep and emotional and what Tom waits is all about. Generally, I like atom Waits, but not something I could listen to all the time. This generator picked some Tom Waits on the right day for me and it was a very pleasant surprise. Just so happens I was prescribed some heavy painkillers this morning and about all I really had the energy for was sitting here listening to Tom Waits. I might give this album one less star other days. But today was the right day.
I liked this one better than the previous Blur album that was on this list. But not enough to make me want to listen to it again.
Gotta love me some DK. One of the better albums. Between chemical warfare and holiday in Cambodia, definitely a solid album.
Hablo espanol solo muy pequeno (quiero practicar) y no comprendo mucho a dice. With that said, this is some of my favorite musical style, and I often don’t even know the lyrics to songs in english because I pay more attention to the instrumentation and the melodies. I’ve always found Latin music very fulfilling. As soon as it starts with those acoustic guitars with nylon strings - they are recorded so beautifully. In fact, the entire album is recorded quite superbly. But then that muted trumpet hits and I was instantly ready to give this album 5 stars and knew I’d be listening to it again later on in life. With that said, in the middle it really slows down a little too much for my taste, and it was enough for me to knock it down to 4 stars. But even then, the songs are still beautiful. And the recording quality is excellent. Whenever there are group vocals, I really get a sense of feeling like I’m out ina courtyard in Havana with these guys all singing. But it’s obviously recorded a high quality facility. Capturing that feel is not easy to do. In fact, thinking about it, I believe some of my favorite recordings have come out of studios in Cuba (looking at you, Arturo Sandoval). Even if it’s not all Cuban music (also looking at you, The Cat Empire).
Pretty chill music. Not my favorite. But alright.
The Eagles are pretty ubiquitous. Never really been my jam. But I Ben I have taken a picture standing on the corner in Winslow, AZ. There’s a statue there and everything. There’s nothing really that offensive to me about any of the music. I just don’t like it very much. As The Dude once said, “I just fucking hate The Eagles, man”. Hate is strong word for my feelings on it, but it’s a quote.
Notes written on partial listen. I’m not sure I quite understand the approach of what the band was trying to achieve with this. The instrumentation quickly becomes quite monotonous. I wanted to say it is repetitive, but things change very very slightly throughout. Though if you were only half-listening it would all sound the same. Some of it isn’t all that bad, but every part of each song so far (I’m on 4 out of 6) is repeated too many times. The vocals, though, I truly don’t understand at all what is happening. As mentioned, I’m at song 4, and every song up to this point has just been a guy talking? Like not trying to sing at all, just talking like he’s telling a story. Track 4 is the first attempt I’ve heard at actual singing, if you can call it that. On top of all of that, there’s an excessive amount of sounds of fingers sliding up and down fretboards on guitar and bass tracks. There’s points where you can hear huge volume changes when an effects pedal is engaged/disengaged. There’s something to be said for the fact that much modern music is compressed to all hell and has almost 0 dynamic range. But holy shit, someone get this band some compressors. Things drop out and it’s so quiet I can’t hear it and turn it up and then suddenly the distorted guitars come back and it’s deafeningly loud. There’s such a thing as too much dynamic range. And if that’s what this band/producer/mixer was going for, they sure nailed it. On top of all of that, the songs are quite depressingly slow. This one is a big thumbs down for me. Into track 5/6 now. I’m feeling rather depressed now. I almost listened to this earlier in the day and I’m glad I didn’t because I had shit to do and listening to this would have made me less motivated to do any of it.
The only songs I was familiar with before this were Money for Nothing and Walk of Life. The rest of this was much more mellow than I expected based on those two songs. Kind of in between experimental and classic rock stuff. Pretty mediocre. But you can’t hate on Money for Nothing.
Man. I never really sought to listen to The Temptations outside of their popular hits, and listening to this made me real glad I never did. Obviously they’ve got their hits and they’re great. But this album just isn’t it for me. “Papa Was a Rolling Stone” was literally over 10 minutes long and the most interesting thing about it was the bass line, which was a 4 bar I fire loop in which the bass was resting 3/4 of the time. They say music isn’t about the notes you play, but the notes you don’t. And that’s true much of the time but come on, guys! The entire album was just way too slow and repetitive for me.
Holy fucking shitballs! This album is awful! I’ve been really giving this album a day thing a good chance and listening all the way through even if the recommended album is from an artist I know I don’t like already (despise Jack White’s music, but still have his album a chance) or if I’m not really enjoying something new to me. This was the first album that came up on this list I just couldn’t even listen all the way through and had to turn it off. Fucking terrible. Everything about it is just awful.
Haven’t listened to this album in probably 15 years and it still holds up for the most part. There’s a couple of great songs (break on through, light my fire) and a couple of mediocre ones (whiskey bar is a bit creepier than I remember). Solid album, very influential in its time. I’ve always wondered how I would like The End differently if I could listen to it without picturing Martin sheen wrecking his hotel room in Saigon. But I guess I’ll never know.
Love this album. I was getting a few dud picks for me recently so I’m glad to have a couple of good ones recently. Glad to see War getting recognition outside of Low Rider.
