Popular Reviews

Channel Orange by Frank Ocean

Real good. Great production. Could cut off the last few songs and it might be better, but the run through the middle of the album is killer. I don't know enough about the genre to speak definitively, but hard for me to imagine a much better version of what this is.

The hits are good ("Hurt" in particular). Pleasant listening. The covers of super well known songs (Desperado, In My Life, Bridge Over Troubled Waters) seem unnecessary. A little boring overall.

The Genius Of Ray Charles by Ray Charles
Oct 09 2023

Side one is fantastic. Ballads on side 2 get a little samey and a little over-orchestrated for my taste.

Beauty And The Beat by The Go-Go's
Oct 10 2023

Very good, fun record. The hits are great, but also very little filler. Maybe not much to come back to except to throw on playlists?

Remain In Light by Talking Heads
Oct 11 2023

Fantastic. Starts perfect through first 3 tracks. Slows down little by the end, but all great.

Teen Dream by Beach House
Oct 12 2023

This feels like a "vibes" kind of record and for whatever reason I'm not on their wavelength. Fine for background at a dinner party, but not something I'm going to listen to.

Channel Orange by Frank Ocean
Oct 13 2023

Real good. Great production. Could cut off the last few songs and it might be better, but the run through the middle of the album is killer. I don't know enough about the genre to speak definitively, but hard for me to imagine a much better version of what this is.

Tres Hombres by ZZ Top
Oct 16 2023

The hits are great, especially waiting for the bus. The rest is solid, but not especially memorable blues rock.

Beautiful Freak by Eels
Oct 18 2023

Quirky 90s pop-rock. Not really my thing. Some unusual stuff maintains interest a little, but just not enough there for me to grab onto.

The Rise & Fall by Madness
Oct 19 2023

Never heard of them. Ska? Nah. Our house? That song from insurance commercials? Nah. Not on Spotify? Nah. But.... This was actually pretty great. Saw it compared to the Kinks Village Green preservation society, and that seems about right. Catchy, nostalgic songs about English life, with a sense of humor. Not really any duds in the bunch. Good stuff.

Gris Gris by Dr. John
Oct 20 2023

Awesome. Loved this one a long time. The vibe is perfect.

Parklife by Blur
Oct 23 2023

Really enjoyed it. Another very British record. A little more Kinksy than I expected. May need to go back to it to see how it sounds a second time.

In A Silent Way by Miles Davis
Oct 24 2023

Near perfect. Great as background or close listening. Just awesome

Dare! by The Human League
Oct 25 2023

Interesting. This seems like the ultimate synth heavy early 80s album. It was pretty great, although vocals are so front and center in the mix it's hard to ignore how dumb the lyrics sometimes are.

Felt Mountain by Goldfrapp
Oct 26 2023

Tough to rate. I liked it, but it also sort of faded into the background while I was listening. Very cool vibe. Nice vocals. Should be a bond theme.

Frampton Comes Alive by Peter Frampton
Oct 27 2023

This is great for what it is, but I feel like I've heard the hits more than enough for my lifetime, and the rest is good and well-played, but mostly not my style. A little too soft-rocky, maybe.

Definitely Maybe by Oasis
Oct 30 2023

pretty great. rocked more than i thought it would. may need another listen to be sure i liked it that much.

Maggot Brain by Funkadelic
Oct 31 2023

Some great bits, especially the title track is incredible, but not loving everything.

Django Django by Django Django
Nov 01 2023

Not objectionable, really, but not great. Maybe I'd vaguely heard of this band, but had no idea what to expect. To put it in the worst way... like Mumford & Sons, plus bleeps and bloops. Animal Collective + Americana. Better than it could have been, but sounded silly on occasion.

Want One by Rufus Wainwright
Nov 02 2023

Interesting. A little too subdued for long stretches. May take a few listens to fully absorb and may grow on me more. Really liked "Go or Go Ahead"... Sound alike Radiohead a bit.

Dub Housing by Pere Ubu
Nov 03 2023

Weird. Kinda sounds like captain beefheart. Can't say I loved it, but it's the kind of thing that takes more than one listen. Not sure I'll give it that. There were a couple tracks that were kind fun... Wine spodyody especially

Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth
Nov 07 2023

Pretty cool. jammier than I thought it would be. Not sure it's in the permanent rotation.

Nov 08 2023

More to enjoy than I thought (particularly uptempo tunes had some cool hard-ass grooves), but gets exhausting, then intolerable as it goes on.

Young Americans by David Bowie
Nov 09 2023

Good! A few songs I hadn't heard on here that were good. Not great 100% of the way through but Fame is a classic and a few others.

Funeral by Arcade Fire
Nov 13 2023

It's good. I love Neighborhood 3 (Powers Out). There's just enough songs that don't really do anything for me that I always tune out. Maybe some more listens would help, but I probably wont.

Ten by Pearl Jam
Nov 15 2023

Cool. I've heard most of these a million times. The ones I hadn't were fine, but I'm not going crazy about them.

Whatever by Aimee Mann
Nov 16 2023

Eh, didn't finish it. I found the music kind of boring and offputting for some reason, outside a couple songs. I'm sure the lyrics are good, but did not do it for me.
