David Bowie
already heard this album a few times. the dawn of glam pop arises.. i like the piano melodies and his bizarre lyricism. really forgot about a lot of these songs that i used to love, like oh you pretty things and changes. there are some odd slow bits that definitely feel more like his first album but overall very interesting and its better knowing how revolutionary this would become. i need to get more into bowie in general. 7.5/10
fav tracks: oh you pretty things, life on mars?, changes, eight line poem

The Velvet Underground
a favorite... fabulous and perfect as always. obviously the punk stuff was unbelievably influential but the mellow stuff is my preference.. it's so well-written and nico's voice is perfectly delicate and raw. fav tracks: heroin, femme fatale, sunday morning, i'll be your mirror

the aesthetics of this music are just awesome.. got a little boring for me in stretches because it's a bit repetitive but honestly i can't dock it for that. fav tracks: nothing, never let me down again, behind the wheel

Fear Of A Black Planet
Public Enemy
soo fucking awesome. as a resolute beastie boys fan i hold the strong belief that young hip hop fans today (and young music fans at large) do not pay enough respect to the golden age. the beats here are out of this world, chuck d and flava flav are absolute menaces, the rhetoric is righteous, what's not to love?? i had heard nation of millions before this, but never this full album- consider me a fan. 9/10 fav tracks: brothers gonna work it out, burn hollywood burn, fear of a black planet, leave this off your fuckin' charts

not really my thing- i can understand why it would be considered a hidden gem, though really i still think there are albums that could've taken its place on this list. lyrically meh, sonically kind of fun. i think i remember scott and scott talking about david mccomb on u talking u2 to me the other day so that makes me want to respect them more. i like eighties melodramatic pop but this is just blah. 5/10 fav tracks: a trick of the light

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
this may have been the wrong nick cave album to start with? i had never heard a nick cave album before this one and i always hear people raving about him- plus, he dated my fav pj harvey. his voice is pretty odd to me, and i was never into the type of music that influenced this, but i still had a good time. this murderous catholic bluesy punk vibe they have is something else. the lyricism is awesome, and i like the arrangements as well. 7/10 fav tracks: straight to you,

The Pleasure Principle
Gary Numan
quintessential synth pop album. i saw a rym review that called it "what brian eno would make if he made a deal with the devil to trade half his talent for a full head of hair." accurate.. but also this record rocks. i love the weird cold feeling of it. it's like being a robot, which is somehow comforting- no more emotions, no more thoughts, just paranoid android rock. 8/10 fav tracks: M.E., films, cars

not my thing- never been a clapton fan and i probably won't relisten, however i can't deny that all three musicians here are masters. i wish they would do a little more with it on here because to me these tracks feel formulaic. 7/10 fav tracks: strange brew

The Damned
such a sick album! disappointed in myself for not listening to this one on the day it was generated for me, because this is super up my alley- i LOVE early punk, the 70s stuff with that repetitive, biting sound. the political wit here is immeasurable as is the catchiness of these melodies. also some truly awesome guitar work that you usually wouldn't hear from a band of this ilk. nibbled to death by an okapi... 8.5/10, fav tracks: i just can't be happy today, anti-pope, noise noise noise

this was fine,, i like dolly but her later stuff is more interesting. this is very plain and simple 70s country that i have never really enjoyed. there were a few tracks that had more interesting arrangements, though. this is something i would listen to if i'm specifically in a country mood. 6.5/10, fav tracks: my blue tears, early morning breeze, the way i see you

The Cure
love the cure. this was almost too dark and dreary for me; i prefer the cure when robert smith is just in love and having fun because that's the type of loser i am. but the aesthetics of it, the dark jangling distortion of it is so awesome. it's crazy that this album came out in '82. you can hear its influence in sooo much later rock, basically anything goth and anything with a lot of distortion and pedals. 8.5/10, fav tracks: the hanging garden, one hundred years, a strange day

aaagghhhh i love it so much. im such a sucker for some orchestral 70s singer-songwriter stuff. the arrangements on this album are so beautiful, the songs are moving, and love and affection is one of my favorites ever i think. joan's voice is so rich and her range is insane, as is her guitar playing. 8.5/10, fav tracks: love and affection, down to zero, someone who loves you

Frankie Goes To Hollywood
awesome, incredibly 80s (thx trevor horn), so gauche and risque. what fun!! scott and scott are always talking about these guys. i was fully expecting the power of love by huey lewis and the news to start playing rather than the song that did. love the eclectic cover choices- edwin starr, bruce springsteen, and burt bachrach! i think born to run is basically uncoverable but all three were very fun. love that song that is just a bunch of moaning with synths and drums. now i want one of those shirts that says "frankie says relax." 7.5/10, fav tracks: welcome to the pleasuredome, war, krisco kisses

Beach House
i always come back to beach house in times like these when i am nostalgic/grieving things in my life. was very happy to see this amazing album here. talk about beauty in music and u have to talk about beach house. this album and this group means so much to me,, i've been listening to their stuff since i was 12. how can a melodramatic teenager not fall in love with their pearly synths, victoria legrand's luminous voice, the lush drums and alex scally's shimmering guitar. i don't listen to a lot of the dream pop and shoegaze that i was really into in middle school, but beach house persists because their music is persistent- this album has not aged at all in 14 years and i think i will be listening to it 10 years from now as well. makes me think of playing in the evening along the sandy river, walking barefoot on the road under the midnight sun, dancing alone in my bedroom. 9/10, fav tracks: zebra, silver soul, walk in the park, norway, take care

Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea
PJ Harvey
my mom loved pj harvey when she was young and i can't disagree with her. i've heard this album in full before, but it's nice to get an excuse to relisten. love pj's voice, the intensity and unflinchingness of the music, which makes it that much more satisfying when it gets tender for a moment. some of the tracks drag for me, but overall this is just a great alt-rock album from one of our art-punk goddesses. 8.5/10, fav tracks: big exit, this mess we're in, we float

The Queen Is Dead
The Smiths
honestly, despite the fact that this is unequivocally a classic i wasn't expecting to like it as much as i did. i've heard an adequate amount of the smiths, but i never bothered to really dive into their discography- the only full album i've heard of theirs was probably this one, a few years back. bigmouth strikes again helped me get into music seriously, but a lot of their stuff struck me as melodramatic and arrogant. and admittedly, that is what it is, but it's also really good! morrissey (despite being a total dickwad) has a beautiful voice, the writing is evocative, and i just love some good jangle pop, really. those strings, the tone of the guitars, and the occasional experimentation with the production, like on some girls are bigger than others- it all works really harmoniously. 9/10, fav tracks: never had no one ever, cemetry gates, bigmouth strikes again, there is a light that never goes out, some girls are bigger than others

this was really solid! i'm not one for white guys doing the blues, but the more experimental and folky bits were really amazing. honestly, to be expected from anything that joni mitchell puts her hands on. really flows beautifully, if i take another listen i'll pay more attention to the lyricism- i was busy finishing up an essay. 8/10 fav tracks: tamalpais high (at about 3), laughing, song with no words (tree with no leaves), orleans

Steve Earle
pretty middling but occasionally sweet lil country record. i feel bad that i haven't given good reviews to country albums so far with this project, because i am a country defender! its just that a lot of the popular stuff is quite bland- same as any other genre. this record felt like springsteen, if you took away the interesting production/instrumentation and a lot of the songwriting talent. there were a few tracks where some really interesting storytelling shone through, but i don't really like this guy's voice overall, both literally and more generally as an artist. 6/10, fav tracks: down the road, someday, little rock 'n' roller

Primal Scream
meh.. i have slowly lost interest in this kind of downtempo electro-rock stuff. feels very repetitive and boring. maybe it's just not for me.. i can see the merit in it, but i fail to feel any kind of interest in the music. only really liked one song that went a much more rock-heavy route, which i think is what i'd rather see from this sort of band. the late nineties were ummmm.... 5.5/10, fav tracks: medication

i was expecting a boring hard rock album, only to be immediately shocked by those vocals! omg! finding out that this band was fronted by a black woman changed my opinion immediately.. you rarely get to hear a black female vocalist singing about racism in this type of music. some of the songs felt more like your average late nineties alt-metal, but i found that the melodies here were quite interesting and i loved the occasional use of a choir or orchestra. really cool stuff. 7.5/10, fav tracks: on my hotel tv, secretly
