Doggystyle by Snoop Dogg
Apr 01 2024

Really enjoyable, especially when looping back to give a deep listen having heard this around 1993. Some of the song constructions are too ever-present (e.g., the backing high synth that became a hallmark of this style). Also had to remind myself a few times that SD was 20-21 when writing this material, which puts some of the theming into perspective.

Vol. 4 by Black Sabbath
Apr 03 2024

Listened to the 2021 remaster and also found the mud of the low end noteworthy. Wasn't blown away by the album but liked it. Changes slaps (and OO's voice shows some real quality and dynamism on that track). Also, a guitar style I find myself enjoying these days is "people who can play technically tight, but choose to play loose af".

Surfer Rosa by Pixies
Apr 04 2024

Great! Gigantic rocks. Yet feels like I need to listen multiple more times.

Pretenders by Pretenders
Apr 05 2024

I think this one is the most compelling so far. 60s pop, rock, new wave. Great feel overall. Tons of motion from track to track but all works together. I feel like you can trace the line back to golden oldies hits and forward to No Doubt.

Iron Maiden by Iron Maiden
Apr 08 2024

I'm digging it. Was a bit of a weird vibe at 9am over coffee but fun. Similar to Jamie it felt closer to my early loves of Use Your Illusion / Spaghetti Incident but with more guitar and drums and less ballads

Violator by Depeche Mode
Apr 09 2024

I gotta buck the trend. I gather that DM was trailblazing emerging genres at this time, but it's just not a style that speaks to me. Biggest meh for me so far

Green by R.E.M.
Apr 10 2024

As someone who has even liked REM in the past!: tbh I don't know why it made the list. Lousy poetry, not sold on the politics (in fairness, politics are fucking hard to write about cleverly and convincingly), musically meh, and the interplay between lyrics/vocals and music meh.

Crocodiles by Echo And The Bunnymen
Apr 17 2024

Really enjoyed this. Tight, interesting, character.

World Clique by Deee-Lite
Apr 18 2024

Super fun. Would listen again.

The Rising by Bruce Springsteen
Apr 25 2024

Bruce is always great, some top notch tracks, but wasn't blowing my socks off

E.V.O.L. by Sonic Youth
Apr 26 2024

Middle of the road for me

Interesting but I think I need another listen or two.
