Classic accompaniment to my teenage angst. Not quite the album boy with the arab strap would be, but a masterpiece regardless. Standout tracks are still “stars of track and field”, “get me away from here I’m dying” and “judy and the dream of horses”. Existential crisis permeates the album, but never without a dash of hope and irony: “chances are you’ll probably feel better if you stayed and played with yourself”.
I miss the old Kanye, straight from the GO! Kanye, producing masterpieces Kanye… Never listened to Common before I am ashamed to admit. Intro is my absolute favourite of the album and absolutely slaps. Kanye production felt all over. Looking forward to make this part of my rotation in the coming weeks and really nestle into the album
Not quite my cup of tea. I suspect I just need to give it more time and really get into the lyrics. I’ve seen her music described as baroque folk, and much like baroque art, it’s just a tad too overwrought for me.
I can see the historical importance, but the rap feels very outdated. The metal/rap version of being the noise with Anthrax is the cherry on top
Going through this list is making me realize just how much of classic bands leave me stone cold. Only track I really enjoyed was mother.
Really nice discovery. I only know and love beach boys from their hits, and was very pleasantly surprised by this “minor” album. Lots of proto-prog sounds in the second half of the album, with highlights “feel flows” and “surf’s up”
Iggy being icky aside, a great album.
Earthquake weather IS a bop. As a whole it doesn’t excite me though.
I imagine suicide’s debut album to have suffered the same fate as the velvet underground: not many people bought it, but all of them started a band. Still, songs like cheree and ghost rider are just gorgeous on their own, regardless of the historical significance of the album
