Jazz is not my style, especially without a singer to enhance it for my own personal musical preference -- but there's a lot of technical skill here and I really like the energy. It's not very often I sit and listen to brass instruments, and they sound great here. Unfortunately not something I would revisit more than likely, and my personal score is 3/5. (On a musical skill level, I'm sure the score is much higher.)
Engaging right off the bat, I already really enjoyed a lot of The Killers' music, but this just confirms it's my style/tastes. 💖😭
Really nice for casual listening, it works well when paired with summertime. It reminds me of parts of my family that I never really got to connect with here in SoCal's central valley.
Longest collection of 4 tracks I've ever heard! Wild of me to think Hotel California was a long song -- this album's got a track That's nearly 20 minutes long.
The first track is pretty nice for background noise, but does suffer from feeling too overstayed. Probably should have been more like 9-10 minutes than 12, but that just might be my personal preferences on long instrumental sections.
One Woman is nice, has really good melody with solid background singers.
Last track felt like a storytime session.
Why is this called Hot Buttered Soul, though. Mr. Hayes, sir.... 😭
Groovy! Nice, smooth sounds. Compared to other soul or soul-adjacent music, it's been my favorite so far; I had heard Isaac Hayes and Curtis Mayfield before this, but enjoyed The Temptations much more. I think I just prefer my soulful, funky oldies albums a little more upbeat, so this worked for me.
Hey, not bad. 😏
Descent 80’s dance, with a bit of slow jam. Don’t know why people hate this one a lot — it was just so-so. The first song was probably my favorite.
There are some songs I feel she has better vocal skill/range than others. I do appreciate her enthusiasm, it definitely carries some of her work. The sound of the album is fun, and really enjoys the 80’s atmosphere it was produced in, but I just can’t give it a higher score than a low 3 at highest compared to other music out there from similar genres and time periods. I do like Inna City Mamma 👍 and the album feels like it improves as it goes. Buffalo Stance is a decently fun opening, but not my favorite on here.
…… eh…………. 💀😔
Pretty good rap. Not my usual style, but I do have a few soft spots for Eminem. Some spots a bit repetitive (we get it, babe, you had a neck cutting thing back in the day, you give people STDs). Great storyteller, though, with an interesting character — even if the novelty of shock value sometimes falls short. There are better Eminem albums, but it’s still got a lot of skill.
Brain Damage, My Name Is, and My Fault are probably my stand-outs.
My theory still stands: experimental or new for the time doesn't mean it'll be good in 50+ years. If you like the sound of the band playing around and making stuff up before the ACTUAL song is recorded, you might like it. Maybe. I like noise with purpose, and if they meant for purpose in it, I couldn't find it.
Not too bad, but it definitely starts off with the best.
It’s okay — but after a while, the sound and lyrical substance blends together and feels very similar across the board. Basic Space is probably the highlight for me, but it’s not an album I would put on unless I would like moody background music somewhere.
Purple Rain is still my favorite of the Prince albums, but this one is definitely infectious, and Prince will always have an incredible voice.
A bit on the boring side — I don’t think the style suits me. Sorry fellas. :( it would be nice as a background sound in an elevator maybe?
It’s listenable and she got a good voice, but it’s nothing special for me and sounds a bit too tuned; she doesn’t step out of her comfort zones vocally. The beats are nice and melodic, but the lyrics are copy-paste from song to song with the same themes. If I were pettier, the Pussy Song would drop this to a 2.5 just for the sake of rolling my eyes through the whole thing. Wouldn’t revisit it, but I can see why some would enjoy. I just need more out of this.
I usually like more variety in the themes of the songs, but her voice is extremely soothing. Super great vocals and great instruments to back it. I’m surprised at how many songs I actually knew without knowing the singer herself.
