when i first listened to this i felt like i was missing too much musical context to truly "get" this album like so many people do but it's still very clear to me how "good" this is regardless of what you know about this kind of music it's clear to me when songs of a more familiar musical vocabulary to me like Lost come in
i listened to parts of this i think either way i'm a little bit familiar with steely dan, i'm pretty sure i liked gaucho *** super eclectic, hearing all kinds of familiar styles of jazz music in here mixed with good ol' dad rock vocals kind of crazy how this is a '77 album; if you added some louder synths and more digital reverb it would be an incredibly 80s sound LOVING the ranty second half of the title track drummer goes pretty hard the bass sound really rubs me the right way still want to marry the electric piano sound tbh weirdly enough, Deacon Blues made me feel like this music could be way catchier; i really wonder if there's something with the same sound but poppier in their discography goes down pretty well, surprisingly short in a good way kinda sleepy tho
i first heard this like 7 or 8 years ago right? the vocal part in 15 Steps feels like something i heard in an ad as a kid now for some reason first time noticing very big krautrock in Bodysnatchers & the album in general; radiohead fans should go listen to some can or neu or something idk oh and go outside ofc Weird Fishes is still gorgeous ngl and Jigsaw Falling Into Place has a super sweet structure honestly really like these two songs for same reasons oh and House of Cards is pretty fun all in all record doesn't hit me nearly as hard as it does some other people as it turns out and come to think of it even tho i always viewed it as one of their best i did so because of how consistent it is stylistically still feeling like i'd get more general enjoyment from The Bends if i was to listen to it now
never heard this before; in fact the only record by them i heard besides the obvious one was the one that came after that UPD: i HAVE in fact heard this before and i didn't really like it *** super interesting how this record feels much more like it's picking up where Nirvana's In Utero left off as opposed to Foo Fighters next record where there's much more assorted influences in the music and the direction & production are pretty different kind of feels like New Order's Movement in that regard oh but it also makes total sense that it was Grohl who played nearly all parts on this; it's not as much Nirvana letting go of Nirvana: the album but Dave Grohl himself i can definitely imagine I'll Stick Around and Alone + Easy Target with Kurt's vocals even still, Good Grief almost sounds like a Naked Raygun song, doesn't it? it's super good Floaty lowkey sounds like something Title Fight would make wtf oh hey Weenie Beenie could be on a Queens of the Stone Age album; aren't they friends with Josh Homme? very nice record that rubs me the right way even compared to Nirvana and later Foo Fighters with an interesting story behind it
move over greta van fleet this sounds like it could've been released in the 70s but for some reason it's a 1990 album good fun tho, just don't think about it too much
fuck man
it's a bit hard for me to give this a rating consciously because over a half of this album is basically in my genetic material now, i can't give an unbiased judgement but the final track is the real highlight holy shit
how have i never even heard this band's name before easily clears most British indie rock of its time and before for me Sea Song and Rise are so gorgeous defo gonna have to give it a relisten later

maybe wasn't the best idea to listen to this early in the morning, it's a very nocturnal album i'm not super huge on depeche mode but that's just because i never really did much of a deep dive into their discography & synthpop is a genre that just doesn't usually have the kind of sound palette i want to hear on a daily basis i feel the same about The Cure and New Order, bands i'm much more familiar with iirc not even their best record Policy of Truth is definitely an underrated banger though and Blue Dress is such a cute song lyrically if you consider what these songs are generally about
ok lol so i really do wonder how records like this get in this list without passing any judgement about the band's music, they're probably legit but they're a "literally who" band; i'm guessing music critics in 2004 chose it as a poster child for something but it's like a salad bowl of 2000s stadium indie/garage rock revival, fucking The Jesus Lizard-style noise rock and a bit of At The Drive-In-style phc it doesn't particularly resonate with me like the two bands i just mentioned, but it's definitely interesting some of it rubs me the right way for sure though
i uhhh i don't really want to have an opinion on this record/band man it's a bit of a mystery to me how an alternative band like this became this popular, even their biggest hits aren't THAT poppy imo and maybe a lot of hate towards Bono and The Edge for being what they are is a bit undeserved; they have their moments for sure but what can you do they're world famous men, it's not even like Bono is irish Morrissey or something the album is good though, it just doesn't cause that strong of a response in me than it does for some other people well maybe except for that line where he was drowning his sorrows but the sorrows learned to swim, that one was funny oh and of course the "a woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle" one; i get that it's a version of an actual quote but coming out of a massively popular rock singer man's mouth it's SO funny i like the guitar in The Fly though and wasn't Mysterious Ways in some video game? honestly the record is pretty bottom loaded, the best songs (Ultra Violet and Acrobat in particular and Love is Blindness too) are on the second half of the album it makes a lot of sense to me that members of Kings of Leon like this band
kinda feel like this band holds a lot of sentimental/nostalgic value for people who grew up in the 70s, who had their FIRST exposure to hard rock with this band simply because of how popular they were and how unlike anything else at the time their stage presence was chances are, if your favorite band's members grew up during the time, they're GONNA mention KISS as one of their early influences but nowadays if you're just getting into hard rock or heavy metal you can easily get bands that rock harder than this for you personally, and their past popularity or stage presence wouldn't matter much because you weren't there at the time and for you Gene Simmons is an old douche bag more than anything or maybe it's just this record because KISS definitely have a ton of other great songs to their name, they're just not all on this album what i want to say is this record was probably much much more of an essential in the past than it is now oh well it's a pretty short listen either way i definitely hear a lot of things here that The Replacements would be massively influenced by though
