Definitely felt like one of their first records. It feels very raw and unpolished in all the best ways. In certain eyes, it can be seen as the most undistilled version of the band. I already liked a couple of their bigger hits but listening to this front to back was gratifying all things considered.
This isn't exactly the kind of oldies I go back to regularly (more of a Motown and classic rock kind of guy) but I'd be liar if songs like California Dreamin' and Straight Shooter aren't classics. The harmonies and production are on point but it doesn't change the fact that this isn't my thing.
Great album, I'm very glad to hear other members in the group like Brian May get the lead on some of the songs on the album. Seven Seas of Rhye and March of the Black Queen have been some of my favorites of theirs since I was a kid.
Walk the Line was my shit as a kid so it's really nice to hear the album from the man himself. To know the context behind the record and concert makes this a much more gratifying listen and this hits home as soon as it begins.

Dawg how have I not found this gem earlier. This is the progenitor to some AMAZING music following this. Not to discount the talent on the record itself, Clapton really came into his own on this record. Somehow 6-9 minute songs just glide by and I wouldn't be mad at the 12 minute mark on some of these. Truly lost to modern music history but definitely worth going back and spinning through a couple of times.
Honestly didn't think too much of it. Hate to be that guy but I feel that other people launched off of his sound and did it much better.

It is the ethos of 90s hip hop to me and shows the genre is more than just "bitches and hoes" like the critics would like one to think. This is instrumental listening to anyone wanting to appreciate music.

Generally very safe and sterile overall. The lead vocals can only be attributed to AC/DC and the guitarwork is solid overall but everything else is as I said, safe. This album pushes no new boats to see but nothing on this project is below decent. I do like Shook Me All Night Long as I think its the lightest and fun song of the album but its the most radio friendly song as well. This album is emblematic of their whole sound and I mean as a compliment and an insult. I don't hate this album but I'm not revisiting it aside from throwing on select songs on a playlist on shuffle.
Coming into this album with next to no expectations and only one other song of theirs under my belt, I was surprised on how many moving parts that some of these songs had without being too overwhelming. But that same compliment worked against it on certain tracks. I feel like this album took its time to really hit its stride but when it did, it was very solid. Unfortunately, the last 3 tracks kinda soured the rest of the album for me. I'm giving it the 3 stars because I think its strong tracks stick out enough but when it falls short, its a predictable listen at best and middling at worst. My favorite tracks are Chicken Dog, Eyeballin and 2 Kinda Love. Those songs had a lot going on but were punchy, memorable and not too abrasive while accentuating the band's strong points. The strong points being, the instrumentation and the production. I can take or leave the vocals depending on the track but the songs where it was lacking or don't exist make those tracks feel like they're missing a key part.
