Very grandiose and experimental sounding. I can see why people put this album near or at the top of their lists for best album of all time. I can hear some punk influences and how later bands and artists pick up and expanded on the influences it provides. I can see myself putting a song or two in my repeat rotation. 8/10
Very dark and Gothic sounding. Overall tone is great, but not sure if I would have any of these songs on a rotation. The album is a great listen if you want to ground yourself in the midst of an episode, or a gloomy fall afternoon. I'd give it a 7/10.
Lovely fusion of jazz, funk, and soul music. As comes with jazz albums, there are 10 minute instrumental singles, however, they're filled with enough switches and Tempo changes to make them feel shorter than they are. Definitely an album to be played and listened to multiple times and get a different feel each time. I'd give it a 9/10.
Best way to describe this album would be a "Coffee House Soundtrack". It's great for having in the background and maybe swaying to, but a lot of the pieces meld together and it feels like 1 really long piece instead of 5 separate tracks. I'd give it a 6/10
Beautiful blend of Latin, Jazz, and Rock. Each instrument feels like it tells own feeling in each song (most prominently, the guitar, obviously) and has a good mix of dance music to jam and groove to, to one's that make you appreciate the composition and listen to the instruments as they unleash their potentials. I'd give the album a 9/10.
I loved this album. Every song felt like I couldn't turn my attention away from it, it made me want to dance and groove the whole time listening to it. Some songs did feel like they went on longer than they should have, but it never felt like it was dragging for so long that it was annoying. It was an almost perfect album, 9/10.
An experimental art album that doesn't land in the slightest. I know that art can be subjective in any medium, but for this to be in a list of "1001 albums to listen to before you die" means that the makers were definitely scrapping the bottom of the barrel to fill the list. 1/10, and that's only because there could have been potential for someone these to launch into at least a mediocre song.
For it being one of earliest examples of Electronica, it is odd. It's first and title track being 21 MINUTES (!!!) and it mostly being quiet is odd. The rest of the tracks do feel like they belong in a Cyberpunk style RPG as background music, but it definitely something I would pursue outside of doing this list. I'd give it a 3/10.
There's a reason she's called "The Queen of Soul," her vocals on this album are phenomenal! From "Respect" to "A Change is Gonna Come," each song pulls you in from deep within and beckons you to feel what it's say and playing. Beautiful instrumentation, production was amazing, I'd give this a 10/10
The crown jewel of "Farewell" albums. The upbeat nature the narrator has in the title track is immediately thrown out with the follow up, and his most iconic cover, "Hurt," and from there you can feel the retrospective he has on his life and his coming to grips with the end. Each song ties into the theme of death, saying goodbye, and trying to come to terms without being completely depressing and hopeless. For a perfect album, I'd give this a 10/10
I don't know how to word it, but I like this album. Joel's vocals and piano playing, and the backing bands playing on each track, come together really well to bring a rocking album to life. "Vienna" is a lovely classic, with my personal favorites being "Moving Out" and "Only the Good Die Young," and each track draws you in to vibe along with. I'd give the album a 8/10.
Mediocre, but not bad album. Sound's okay, instrumentation is great but could do more, I'd give it a 6/10.
Not much to comment on, but it is a great listen. I'd give it a 8/10
For a debut album, it does great. The use of pitched soul samples is excellent, beats and production are good, lyrics and features range from goofy one liners to harder hitting verses, it's a solid debut and a good showing of what would come later in his career, and why he would be considered one of the better producers in hip hop. Obviously with his controversial history (especially as of late) I can see people wanting to avoid his works all together, however I knew a friend that had the CD from ages ago and asked to borrow it. I'd give the album a 8/10.
Lovely fusion of gangsta rap and r&b, Dre and Em do well with the production, and the classics still sound great many years later. 50's lyricism isn't the best, but his delivery give the album its signature grit and fun style. Overall I'd give the album a 8/10.
Beautiful mix of psychedelic, blues, and rock music. Singing fits the instruments well, and it's an overall good listen. I'd give it a 9/10.
Beautiful instrumentation from the backing back, Prince's vocals and guitar work, and everything that went into the production as well, "Purple Rain" could've been the potential magnum opus for a multi-talented artist. From the ever popular "Let's go Crazy" to the iconic final/title track "Purple Rain," each song on the album draws you in and holds you by the collar for the ride it takes you on. A true "no skips" album, I'm giving this album a 10/10, the first from this list.
