1001 Albums Summary

first time listening to a funk album. having grown up on rock music, the first thing i noticed was that the guitar work is incredible, especially on the last track "maggot brain." some songs felt longer and more drawn out that im used to, but that's also probably because i havent been exposed much to this kind of music that feels more improvisational or 'jamming' oriented. i liked it.

first time hearing this band and frontman phil lynott. the live production is really good, especially on the 2022 remastered version. the band played exceptionally well. i enjoyed reading the lyrics and how stories are told in the songs (i liked "emerald"). however, a lot of the songs also felt repetitive to me; there aren't too many variations in the band's sound (at least in this live record). that's to say that the band's songs have a tendency to sound a bit generic. for this reason the middle part of this record felt a bit tedious to get through. of course, there are some really good moments during the first half and last half. sadly, not much left an impression on me.

thoroughly enjoyed this one! the production and songwriting are so full of life. brilliant

didnt get into this album. at first the drums and the guitar work were mind blowing, but it quickly became tiring to listen to. the songwriting felt repetitive. it's passable

the melodies and textures on this record are really interesting. the lyrics are sincere and insightful, albeit a bit preachy at times, which is a tendency for some political writing. compared to the lyrics on marvin gaye's "what's going on" record (which is comparable in the sense that it was released only two years prior), a lot of the words here didn't land as effortlessly to me. that being said, the song arrangements are spot on and wonderful to listen to.

so much gold in one album. it's a cohesive work with just enough variation so as to be full of flavor. loved it

i was looking out for something special, but i didn't find it. a pretty okay album.

there were some interesting moments, however a lot of the songs felt tedious to get through. i like classic rock, but this generally just felt okay
