A Girl Called Dusty
Dusty SpringfieldA little corny Songs and production was nice, but no real stand outs
Very good guitar riffs Catchy album Kinks cover is one of my favourites so far
Funky Lower highs than Talking Book, but high lows You haven't done nothing yet was an instant classic, Jackson 5 a welcome surprise in the chorus
groovy
A classic Gold Dust Woman is my favourite - would have liked Silver Springs on the album but GDW works better as a closer
A little corny Songs and production was nice, but no real stand outs
Really great, abrasive production Reminiscent of Primal Scream's Vanishing Point and XTRMTR Could do with a little more sonic diversity in the middle
Unsurprisingly I liked this album - I've always been a fan of the slightly kitschy late 60s 'britpop' sound ala Sgt. Pepper's and Village Green Preservation Society, that would also get revisited later with Blur and Pulp. Waterloo Sunset is an absolute classic, and this is definitely a stepping stone to the tighter, more musically adventurous albums that would come later. The Kinks continue to surprise me with every deep dive, and show they were more than just a standard 60s pop rock band.
Absolutely groundbreaking album, it's a testament to the ideas of Lou Reed and co. that this album still feels exciting and different listening to it almost 60 years later. Sunday Morning is one of my favourite openers of all time, maybe the earliest example of a dream pop song there is. Despite the harsh feedback and the out there lyrics, the album is has a fair amount of love songs and introspective moments.
ELO is one of those classic 1970s bands that I never really got into outside of their big singles. I always thought the saying that they would what the beatles would be if they had continued into the 70s to be quite a superficial one, as their music always felt more of a sonic homage to the beatles rather than continuing with the experimentation and sonic diversity that characterised most of their late 60s work. I was pleasantly surprised - the album neither proved nor disproved the above saying, but did show that ELO was a good band in their own right. Turn to Stone is a really catchy opener, and most of the album holds up to the standard it sets. If I were to compare to the Beatles, it would be the end of Abbey Road, the three track punch of Golden Slumbers, Carry That Weight and The End. The main issue is that the album goes on for too long. Around the tenth track, the album starts running out of tricks and it starts feeling like a bit of a chore.
