I enjoyed it more than I thought. Vocal harmonies and song structure were really.cool. nit exactly my style so probably won't come back to it but wouldn't mind listening again.

There are flashes of brilliance on this album, but there is too much bloat. Some songs are absolutely in 5 territory, while others are more 2-3. The jams are fun but not really conducive to an album.

I've never been a rap fan. Passively listened to this and was really impressed by the wordplay, the humor, and messages. Will probably revisit. Easily 4 star.

Great representation for early soul. Solomon Burke has a great voice and the songs are fine. But not much special going on and as an album it isn't really anything special. I like it but beyond singles not worth a revisit.

I was expecting some kind of lame singer songwriter mostly acoustic thing, but this rocks. Vocal harmonies on point. Songwroting is fantastic. Great instrumentals. I would have mixed it heavier but there is a lot here. I hear a lot of what influenced some of my favorite artists. Potential to be a 5 but needs a lot more listens for that.

Blues is a genre I want to dive into more. The production is great, performance is tight, lots to like here. Think I'll revisit this one.

Frankly, I don't think this belongs on this list.
There are some interesting ideas, but the execution is strange- a lot of the instruments feel like first takes riddled with (deliberate?) mistakes.a lot of out of key notes. Might be artistic license, or playing in the studio, thinking it sounds cool, and leaving it.
Voice is just OK, nothing special in home production 2017. Some of the synth arrangements are pretty cool.
There just doesn't seem to be anything critically or commercially significant here. Just feels like a home album a producer/songwriter put together that feels more demo than final product. Some aspects of unifying themes but feels pretty weak all in.
I think its an ok album but I wouldn't revisit it. If I thought it were justified for the list, I'd give it a 2.5, but I don't so it's a 1.5. Not a 1 because ther is a decent album underneath.
1.5, I round down.

This one had potential, but I think its a little too disjointed. Good ideas but bad implementation, probably from the overuse of drugs. Some of these really jam and I can see how they are capturing the essence of a rave, but as a band it isn't very coherent at times.

Hard one to rate. Musically, its not for me, but the music supports the lyrics, which are extremely well written. Given the content and subject matter and cohesoveness as an album, this would be a 5 based on the lyrics alone. But I'm also interested in the music and its a little too minimalistic for me and not really something I enjoy. Would recommend for poets and literary folks. Not so much for musicians. Not likely to revisit, which puts it at 3 or less on my scale. I think I can respect its inclusion on the list given how different it is, it being a final release from a well known songwriter, and the cohesive and fantastic lyrics and themes. It's not here for the music.
Giving this one 3. I didn't like it much but I get it, and lyrics save it from a 2.5 or 2

I enjoyed the instrumentals as background music. Did not enjoy the vocals.
But more importantly, I don't think this belongs on the list. Doesn't seem significant enough or special. Feels run of the mill electronica.
1.5. I round down. If I thought it belonged on the list it would be a 2.5.

I've never been a hip hop or rap fan but I think its because I was listening to what Jurassic 5 would call "One of Them". Given this came out in 2002 at the height of the really terrible rap moment in pop music, I can't believe this wasn't top of the charts. I honestly think this era was the worst for the top 40 in Billboard history- very few of those songs hold up.
This record is fantastic. The lyrics are clever, the flows are great, the rap harmony is a really cool element, Chali 2na's baritone voice is just awesome. Definitely will revisit and listen to more Jurassic 5. Liked everything I heard, some of it I loved.
4.5, I round down.

A lot of the reviews didn't listen to the album.
I get he's playing a character and playing for an audience. Seems like a lot of people on here don't.
This one is interesting. I like the more heavy cuts, but the country/southern influenced ones work. I get why its on the list- the southern hip hop thing works and this is probably the first time something like that really was made commercially successful.
There's actually good musicianship on a lot of these tracks.
I wouldn't say its a great album, but some songs are cool, majnly the heavier ones. Others kind of suck, especially the heavily autotuned Only God Knows Why.
It's not a classic, but it deserves to be on the list. I wouldn't go through the album again but would revisit certain songs in the right context.

Wow, this one really surprised me. Never been an electronica/techno/edm guy. But this comes from an almost jazz/pop background, and the songwriting is totally what I'm into. Vocals are on point. Production is strong. Gonna definitely come back to this one.
5, just narrowly. Has some songwriting similarities with some of my favorite songs from later artists. Gonna definitely explore more of them.

Noise rock can be a tough listen. This is not. Songs are generally cohesive with rhythms and feels. A lot of good energy is captured. Not sure Inwould revisit this but seems like a high for the noise rock genre in that it didn't sound entirely like random playing but more composed.

I've always heard that Sparks was well regarded. This album has some interesting things going on but is a lot of the same overall "goofy" feel on every song. I enjoyed it but not sure I would revisit.

Soundtrack to early college years. While the big songs are fine the back half of the album really has some hidden gems. I'm actually not a huge fan of Kids or Time to Pretend but there's a lot of cool production and songwriting.
Holds up, its a 4.

Self indulgent to a fault. Album and songs are not tight. Cutting out some of the fluff would make this a much better listening experience. Gotta give credit to the strong production and guest appearances though. I did think the black balls and fish dicks lines were pretty funny though.
2.5, not a big fan but production was worth listening to. I get why its on the list.

The Cure has much better songs and records. I think I can understand this album's inclusion as a starting point to get there but not sure I would have included it. Feels very experimental and strange. Maybe key on the band's development, but not necessarily important in a larger context.

This is a weird one. It's a cool blend of genres with a strong world music influence, particularly dub. Reminds me of The Clash at times. Some of these songs work others not so much. Jah Wobble is an interesting figure though.
