1001 Albums Summary

This album is fantastic!

I want to like this album a lot. It's got some absolute bangers on it and the signature Police high quality lyrics. The problem for me is that I struggle to be objective because the hits here have just been played into the ground. I would like to come back to this album later. I have a feeling it will be worth a relisten then.

Too much slow music

6 out of 5 stars! I know that in music there is almost never a "first" band/artist/album/song of any genre. But if there was going to be a first "metal" album, for my money this is it! The intro of this album is dark, ominous, and fucking METAL. I can't think of a better way to begin the genre than Black Sabbath. The rest of the album is also great, but nothing really reaches the level of the first track. I'm totally willing to hear the rest of the album as the band trying to figure out how they want do use the psychedelic music they are so clearly indebted to do what they want

This is an interesting album for me. Being a fan of krautrock and ambient music, it's cool to see Bowie (and Brian Eno, to be fair) interacting with those genres. The first side of this album (I have it on vinyl, but the split on this album is pretty obvious even if you don't) is pretty cool. Bowie the songs feel kind of fragmented and spiky and the lyrics are dark. But my favorite part of this album by far is the second side. It's a set of ambient songs that pretty much wordless. The only time we hear voices at all are some wordless chants. They remind me very much of what I like about kosmische Musik: flowing instrumental melodies that make feel like I'm floating on the music.

Second album in a row that came out of Iggy Pop and David Bowie moving to Europe.
