I’m starting the resolution a little early of listening to new albums at least once a week (ideally once a day) using the 1001 album generator website. This is my first pick!! I feel like this is such a good first pick for me. I’ve obviously heard of Alanis Morissette and know the classics, but I’ve never sat down and ingested her work before. I’m looking forward to listening through the album.
All I Really Want - 8.5
STRONG guitar/bass combo to begin this song. I feel like I’m in a movie. This feels like the beginning to an infamous crashout. About being conflicted about things you want as a complex human being. I thoroughly enjoyed. Morissette has a very unique voice and I don’t know if would work for everyone, but I find myself really captured by the genuine approach to her music. Very groovy and I found myself head bobbing along.
You Oughta Know - 9.5
I mean, c'mon. This is the classic Morissette, and for a reason. This song is powerful and I feel like I can have no real notes. I just sit and am along for the ride. The loss of half a point comes from this not being the genre I typically find myself coming to and I’m not sure of its re-listenability for me personally. But this song is top tier and I respect the hell out of its place in the zeitgeist of pop culture.
Perfect - 7
Woah. Slowing it down and getting deep as hell. This song being about parents living vicariously through their children and promising an idea of unconditional love but finding fault in the things their kids do. I like the simple, driving nature of the track and how it almost hits you with this abrupt tone and harsh phrasing. Definitely packs a punch. Similar to You Oughta Know, I don't know how often I’ll come back to this in terms of relistens, but it's a strong and emotional song. “We’ll love you just the way you are if you’re perfect” is a banger of a line.
Hand in My Pocket - 8.5
Another classic Morissette, if people haven’t heard this one, I’m concerned about them living under a rock. About the back and forth of being human, it really is living somewhere in between both extremes all of the time, “and what it all boils down to is that no one has it figured out just yet”.
Right Through You - 7
Starting acoustic?? Ok. Driving DRIVING chorus. Powerful, teetering on the “girlboss” energy the women of the time would have run with after hearing this. But ultimately, this song is going to be about how horrible men are and are never ever clever enough to not be seen right through.
Forgiven - 7.5
Alright so this is going to be a song for the religious trauma girls. About how ass backwards religion is, especially existing in a patriarcal religion like Catholocism. This track has insanely emotional writing which is meant to pull these feelings out and call for reflection about religion in general. I like how Morissette directs us to this feeling of we were kind of forced into these religions by our parents when we were kids and ultimately the teachings of those churches are not lining up with lived experiences and leads to messy life events where the church has failed us, or specifically Morissette in this instance. Very specific song and again, a little pointed for my everyday listening, but I appreciate how emotional and strong this messaging is.
You Learn - 9.5
Title track!!! Jagged little pill makes an appearance in the pre-chorus. I love the messaging of this one. Basically saying that no matter what happens, anything can be a lesson and YOU LEARN. This song is probably the one that I identify with the most and could see myself listening to again. I LOVE the line about “melt it down, you’re gonna have to eventually anyway” because we really have to go through this life, we may as well take as many lessons from it that we can!!!!
Head Over Feet - 8
This is a song about the nice guy, friends-to-lovers arc. “I couldn’t help it, it’s all your fault” and “you’ve already won me over in spite of me” are amazing lines. Good job to the guy in this song, he sounds like a good one. …Didn’t she date Joey from Full House though….I’m becoming nervous that this song is about him. Very cutesy song.
Mary Jane - 7
Wow, vibe shift from the last song. Alanis Morissette could power a city on her pronounciation of “bab-ay” alone. I think this song is about taking care of the woman who is always taking care of others before it eats her alive. I see a lot of different applications for this song for different people, but ultimately is going to be about the price of empathy and caring for others.
Ironic - 9
Another classic!! Who knew they were all on this album. Overlooking the fact that some of these example are not “irony” but maybe that’s further irony for the song. This song slaps and is absolutely DRIVEN by these vocals.
Not the Doctor - 9
Another acoustic start. Loving this one and adore how this writing says that she cannot be bothered to be a caretaker for this man. These are not her problems; she’s “not the doctor,” and things are starting to progress past her pay grade. Love the call out to how backwards some relationships are, while also almost protecting herself from the expectations put on her in relationships.
Wake Up - 7
Last track!! When I hear this song, it's about how a relationship is going to end if this guy is not putting in the effort to continue it, and it was never going to work out due to personality differences. He was a contrarion, passive, empty, going-through-the-motions, struggling with commitment guy who did not align with Morissette. She’s telling him to get over himself, wake up, and get out, and I’m here for that energy. “There's an obvious attraction to the path of least resistance in your life but there's an obvious aversion no amount of my insistence could make you try tonight” is just a banger line and truly the core of most relationships, that if two people are not compatible in their lives and goals, it is not going to work out.
Overall - 8
Wow okay!! That album was not really what I expected, and I came away with a few new bangers to add. You Learn, Not the Doctor, and All I Really Want were my favorite songs (that I had not heard previously). My least favs were probably Perfect, Right Through You, and Forgiven because they felt a little misplaced with the rest of the tracks, but they were still solid songs! This genre and type of album are not typically what I listen to or gravitate towards. Still, I found a new respect for Morissette after listening to this album in its entirety. I liked her blunt writing style and, of course, her strong ass vocal that ends up driving a lot of these power ballads.
Willie!!! Of course Willie is a classic artist in pop culture and someone who has reshaped country music in his decades long career. I know the hits, but again haven’t really sat down and ever listened to an album.
Time of the Preacher
This is one of my favorite genres/styles of country music - the true storytelling of it all. This sounds like an epic set up, like a true villain origin story. I take it to mean that this preacher really didn’t know what he was talking about prior to his love leaving him and was basically talking to talk, but after going through this breakup he had to get serious and start learning what his life is going to be like without this love
I Couldn’t Believe It Was True
Aw a lil breakup song. He can’t believe his love is no longer there but seems to want the best for her, even if that’s without him. He seems to still be reeling from the shock of the breakup.
Time of the Preacher
Okay he seems to be moving out of sadness now and maybe into anger? “The lesson is over and the killin’s begun” so he went from preaching to learning to killing now ??? Yikes. This one def feels darker.
Blue Rock Montana
Uh oh, aparently this long lost love went off with another man. And he killed them both????? Damn Willie.
Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain
Aw this one is sad. Does he feel bad that he killed his old lover? I can see this song working as a way to reminisce about his lost love because she left him but also now being dead he may be mouring her. The guitar in this one is beautiful.
Red Headed Stranger
Ok so HE is the red headed stranger after he killed the love of his life for cheating. Each chorus explaining how everyone basically just needs to leave him alone in his grief. Uh oh, now a new woman is getting involved…and is also now dead because she “crossed him”.
Time of the Preacher v2
Is this story finally ending while not really ending? Basically saying life moves on. Another gorg guitar.
Just as I Am - Instrumental
Denver
Oh okay so he’s fine now in Denver, he’s moved on? He’s talking about smiling with this new woman now (similar to how he killed his old lover in Blue Rock Montana) but now is able to smile again after she hurt him.
O’er the Waves - Instrumental
Down Yonder - Instrumental
Can I Sleep in Your Arms
This one is wayyyy slower. Very sweet, he’s basically begging this new woman to love him after he’s picked up the pieces of his old lover screwing him over. He seems to be opening up again. Gorggggg piano at the end here.
Remember Me (When the Candles are Gleaming)
He WAS faithful and loving to this woman until she did him dirty. Now he’s saying that all of that is null and void basically. The vows from before mean nothing and he’s moving on. He almost wants this woman to remember him and remember their time together because it probably was good at one point and he was good to her; almost wanting her to sit at night and think about them (even though she’s dead now?)
Hands on the Wheel
This one is such an open love song, it’s beautiful. “With no place to hide, I looked in your eyes and found myself in you,” He feels like he has a more intentional grasp on this relationship after living his life (he is now an old man) and knowing his life was meant to be with this new woman he found after his mess of grief and pain. Nelson has SUCH an emotional voice for this song it’s heartbreaking. It really feels like the closer for this album and this story - like he’s made peace.
Bandera - instrumental
Listening to this, this feels like a time for reflection over the red headed stranger’s life and how he is finally at peace and life does continue to go on. From preaching to learning to killing to healing, while not exactly in those exact terms (don’t kill people), this album can be used to accompany the span of many human emotions after pain and finally come to a place of acceptance.
Overall - 6.8
Wow what a quick album!! I didn’t give each song an individual rating because most were like a minute long, but I really liked this album. Super cohesive and emotional delivery from Willie. There is clear imagery used here to build the world of a 1901 western and I really felt pulled in. It’s also a masterclass in arrangement as many of these songs were not written for this album, but were covers that have been made to fit into the story here. I can’t see myself reaching for this body of work in terms of re-listenability, but I love how simple and beautiful these songs ended up coming together.
E-Pro - 8
Love the funky and catchy beat this one has with the guitar that really opens up in the chorus. Kind of a simple chorus, but it serves as a place for the guitar to shine. In his bio, it says that Beck grew up as a Scientologist and the E-Pro title was meant to be a play on some Scientologist thing, I can see the bridge having Beck take an overall message of good (“I wont give up that ghost”) but also calling out how fucked up the way he grew up must’ve been (“It’s sick the way these tongues are twisted)
Que’ Onde Guero - 7
Knowing what we know about Beck, that he grew up pretty poor as a Latin immigrant in LA, this song tells a story of that upbringing. Beck is also a white man, so “Que’ Onda Guero” meaning “What’s up white boy/blondie” and takes us through the cities where he grew up. He talks of the atmosphere, the people he would interact with, and reinforces this kind of “grunge-y, dirty city vibe”. Idk how often I would go to this for a relisten, but it was catchy and I liked how immersive it felt. It was like if I was walking down the streets in these cities.
Girl - 6.5
A girl who is kind of full of contradictions. It seems like Beck loves her but also writes about her with this hint of evil. I think this song is about a girl who Beck sees as someone who is from the same living situation as him and he wants better for her, almost seeing wasted potential. Is he mad at her for that and that’s where some violence in this song comes from? This one was kind of confusing to listen to and make sense of, plus the heavily contested “sun-eyed girl” vs “cyanide girl” gives this song intrigue. I like it though, it was catchy and was had a lighter quality than I thought I would be hearing from this album.
Missing - 7
He’s praying to forget someone or some feeling (mental illness?) in this song and saying they’ve already taken so much from what little he has to give. He describes almost a revolving door of things that remind him of this person/feeling. Funky flow in the bridgeeeee love. Really not what I was expecting from this song. I like it.
Black Tambourine - 7.5
This song immediately opens up to imagery about a break-up of some sort. I also read it as a public break up (We sing a song that was hated) but feeling like something is wrong after seperating from this person that it’s causing pain that takes a fire and hurricanes among other acts of God to clear. He’s sad and broken up, but keeps playing his music and rtucking on (re: playing a black tamborine). Verse 2 suggests she may have taken advantage of him being from a similar situation as him. He also uses music to cope with his situation and it is something that never leaves him (“We’ll shake and rattle our bodies to keep warm at night, my tamborine is still shaking”). YES GUITAR. The last verse being verse 1 repeated shows the cyclical nature of his life. Yes he’s in heartbreak, but he has to keep trucking along.
Earthquake Weather - 7
Falsetto in the chorus?? Go off. Also a little funky synth at the end here? Love. This one is also kind of confusing to review. I think it’s just him singing about how uncertain he is with his life. Maybe the earthquake of it all signifies a change on the horizon that could be good or bad, but for now he is working and plugging along his days with this uncertainty in his mind.
Hell Yes - 7.3
This one is so hip-hoppy. This seems like a commentary on writing entertainment in America. He feels like he’s reached commercial success and now some of the accolades mean nothing, everyone is power-drunk or real drunk/high around him, and he’s noticing a conformity crisis around him where things are sounding the same to fit a “successful formula” The chorus here is reminding us that he is always going to be changing and to just sit with what he puts out as an artist.
Broken Drum - 5.5
Guitar immediately grabs your attentnion. This seems to be a memorial song. Not too much to pick apart abt this one. It’s very sweet, he’s telling his late friend that he could see his struggle with mental health (maybe depression) and tells him not to worry about what he’s leaving behind. If that’s what he has to do, they will carry on remembering him.
Scarecrow - 7
Seems like he’s going back and forth between some kind of plagueing thoughts. But he also acknowloges that he has some autonomy over this. The scarecrow’s only scaring himself could mean that overcompensating for these thoughts rather than acceptance and moving on is only making things worse for him.
Go It Alone - 7.5
Jack White writing/instrumental feature is crazy damn. The character Beck is writing about here is coming to terms with the fact that he thought he’d always end up alone, but is them about to propose to somebody. I think he is battling with the fact that he is no longer “going it alone” like he maybe always imagined he would and is burning that life up to start a new one. Idk. This one was also kind of confusing to me to pick apart. It’s very gravelly in almost a bluesy way and White’s bass line in the chorus is catchy as hell.
Farewell Ride - 5
This one is just outlining the nature of an all-consuming addition (to coke) and how that addicition will more than likely lead the narrator to an early grave. I like the stompy rock nature of this, but it’s a little repetitive for my taste.
Rental Car - 6.5 (maybe 7)
Yess guitar again. I like the idea of taking something as far as a rental car will let you. It’s like he knows it’s got to end at some point, but he’s enjoying the ride for as long as he can.
Emergency Exit -
Last song already??? Crazy. I think this song is about not giving up on something when it may not be successful. The first verse outlines not pawning off his watch and chain to the landlord in his head, so he’s not calling it quits justtt yet. Verse 2 seems to be him working hard and he take anything else with him when he goes, so he may as well take advantage of the oppurtunities he’s got. Maybe the outro is calling to not become jaded and stay curious to what you want to do.
Overall - 7.5
I think this has been my favorite album so far. I love how catchy the songs are and how unique of a perspective Beck comes to the table with. I loved the hip-hop inclusions as well as the pure rock and grunge feel like comes with these tracks. I also like his inclusions working with a DJ during production, you can hear their work in those synths and more electronic sounds. I think there was a stompy quality that had be nodding my head along with most of the songs. I do think a couple of the songs didn’t land for me and the front half of this album is what really shines for this project. The opening track was my favorite followed by: black tambourine, hell yes, go it alone, and girl. My least favorites were probably farewell ride and broken drum. I already want to listen to more of Beck and to this album again, it has fully intrigued me.
Yesssss ofc another Rolling Stones album back to back…..I still am not convinced I am going to love this album. However, Wild Horses is on it, so at least I have that to look forward to.
Brown Sugar - 6.5
Very bluesy and with some honky tonk elements as well as some soulful vibes. Plus a sax? Always appreciated. Almost too sexual of a song but has a solid vibe, I just feel kinda weird listening to it.
Sway - 6
So this one is going to be around the pitfalls of the rock n’ roll lifestyle. Yea idk, I don’t love listening to Mick Jagger. He just kind of feels like he’s yelling at me while trying to find a key to sing into. I do like the actual meat of this song though and the writing is solid. Guitar goes crazy. I feel more emotionally invested in what the guitar is conveying in this track. It almost sounds sad while absolutely wailing - kind of how I imagine the guilt and pain must be living the life of this band.
Wild Horses - 9.5
Extra half a point for the memories associated with TSITP. This is such a great song, not much more to say tbh. Wild horses couldn’t drag me away.
Can’t You Hear Me Knocking - 3
Entirely too long of a song at 7:16. But it was groovy, I just lost attention.
You Gotta Move - 5
I hate this twang in Jagger’s voice I’m hearing. Very like church hymn energy. It’s a fine song I guess, I just cannot see myself ever listening to it again.
Bitch - 8.5
Like the rock energy I’m hearing in this one. Okayyy so this one is about feeling just out of wack when you’re in love. HORNS??? This is prob my second favorite track after Wild Horses.
I Got the Blues - 6.5
Mick Jagger singing a ballad is just not my fav. More horns though which I appreciate. Organ??? Very southern/gospel. I honestly didn’t dislike that one as much as the beginning would have led me to believe.
Sister Morphine - 4
Drug ballad. I’m not saying it’s not coming from a very real place, but idk it really just doesn’t land for me. Rock n’ Roll in the 70s and 80s folks!! Don’t do drugs. There is some funky keys in the back here that open up into a pretty cool instrumental section. I think I like the Rolling Stones best when Mick Jagger is not singing hahah. Another song bordering on too long at 5:31.
Dead Flowers - 5
Is this Mick? Why on Earth is he singing this way? But I like the “easy listening” kinda country vibe even though it has bananas sad lyrics. A more upbeat song about using drugs. I think this kind of a petty song tbh. Like he’s telling this girl (or maybe he’s talking to the drugs???) that she can still send dead flowers as a “fuck you”, but he is still going to get the last laugh by sending roses to her grave. So maybe leading us to that he’s stronger than his addiction even though is seems like he’s actively going through it? Idk that’s just my take on it. Kind of intriguing song.
Moonlight Mile - 7.5 (maybe 8)
Last song (kinda finally)!! He has a very...interesting falsetto range. This one is giving a moody musician song. He isn’t fulfilled by the fans and adoration anymore, he’s constantly on drugs, and living on the road. It seems like he’s still finding some satisfaction in the music of it all. Pretty piano in the back. Maybe that’s symbolizing a more “pure” version of his love for music underneath this hardened rock n roll shell. I really fuck with the instrumentals in this one. I think this is the most genuine song I’ve heard from Jagger. I like him exploring a very real emotion to expertly chosen instrumentals. After listening to this, I imagine Jagger still having his dreams (the moon/this "thing" that's being lit up that he is still doing all of this traveling for), but maybe needing a new way to chase them after getting fed up with how it’s been going so far on the road/touring/singing.
Overall: 5.5
Okay, this album kind of surprised me. There were def some stinkers on this one for me. I’m not absolutely in love with Mick Jagger as many of my individual reviews would support. I think his voice just doesn’t do it for me. But there were definitely some songs I liked and will be adding for their instrumentals and overall story. Wild Horses is a classic that was already on my playlists, but additionally I will be adding Bitch and Moonlight Mile and maybe even I Got the Blues. My least favs were Sister Morphine, Can’t You Hear Me Knocking, and You Gotta Move. I really don’t think I have it in me to listen to another Rolling Stones album for a third day in a row so HOPEFULLY I get a good one tmr.
I mean the band that this album is coming from has me really hopeful. They sound like they’re gonna be super groovy. At only 8 songs taking up 45 minutes, this album kind of has to deliver. I’m not looking forward to every song being almost 5 minutes or longer. The way this is the only album from this artist is crazy. This band is not super popular? I’m confused why this album was on this list to be listened to.
She’s Fresh - 3
Yesss funky horns. FRESH. I fear I’m going to get bored, it’s a lot of repetitive writing. I like the jazz bass and the horns are so fun but it’s a lot of yelling FRESH in different lines. Very jazzy with hip hop.
It’s Nasty - 3.5
I think this one sounds the same as the last one? It’s got that bouncy hip-hop vibe with a similar style of ad-libs and callouts. I’m not sure what instrument I’m hearing like 2 minutes in, but I vibe. I also like how this one calls out a kind of hypocritical nature that Black artists face, where people thing the music they’re making is inherinently “nasty” but it’s not and people just need to listen to the fun vibe. I feel like this song has been sampled before cause some of it is sounding familiar.
Scorpio - 1
Funky synth and voice modulation. It’s lasting way too long. Is the whole song going to sound like this? Their doing another “roll call” section, I stg there has been one in every single song. I did not enjoy that. There was no dynamic anywhere and the entire song was that modulated crap.
It’s a Shame - 2
Already a step up from the last song. I don’t love this callout and response style of singing these guys do. Is this a commentary on social issues too?
Dreamin’ - 2
Stevie Wonder love? This is prob my favorite one in terms of instrumentation and style so far because it’s in a easy listening vibe and it’s got a sweet message kind of. Okay the Stevie Wonder thing was cute, but now it seems kinda weird…”We believe anything that you see” is a strange line to me. I actually think I am dnf-ing this song. I get that they’re manifesting and showing adoration but it just feels like a super random yet specific song that I’m just not loving.
You Are - 2
This song is the least streamed on the album. UGH I feel like I’m starting to become biased because I’ve not loved the last couple songs. But I’m boreddddd
The Message - 7.5 maybe 8
Title track!! It better be good too cause this album has kind of not been. I’m not even that hopeful cause it’s freaking 7 full minutes long. I like the way he said “rrrats”. This one has flow I fuck with it. This song really hits home that if it’s not one thing its another and its just hard to LIVE bro. I can’t believe I’m saying this but I kind of think this song needs to be as long as it is to contribute to the narrative. This is the only song on the album that seemed to get any sort of traction I’m kind of confused why this album as a whole was suggested. Getting a little graphic with some added police violence at the end here but this song is by far the best part about this album.
The Adventures of Grandmaster Flash on the Wheel of Steel - 4.5
Hating the cuts. But the samples in this one go kinda crazy like the Queen riff? Lets go. Very interesting tempo. And you guessed it, another roll call section. Idk if this was intended but the DJ cutting sounds so disjointed on this track. Oh and the last 4 minutes of this track is going to be a instrumental DJ set. Ooh this sample traveled in between my ears though and I like when they do that. Ok I read about how this track was kind of foundational for DJs and producers now and how this track mixing all of these different songs (using 3 turntables I guess) from a live set was pretty revolutionary for the producer and sound mixing aspect of it all. So, after reading about it a little more, I respect it. Idk if I would ever listen to it again though.
Cherub Rock - 5
Solid guitar to open. I’m nervous that I really won’t like this song and album as a whole. Straight up rock like this really isn’t my vibe. I like the comparisons and complications they are writing about working in the music industry. It has a very sarcastic, tongue-in-cheek essence.
Quiet - 4
His voice like unsettles me a little. I don’t like how this song never seems to fall into a pocket of rhythm outside of a constant guitar in the back. Solid guitar solo here. Very stereotypical for 90s/early 2000s rock songs. I like how theres a power shift from the beginning being from a presumed parental figure but by the end of the song he’s kind of taking that power back.
Today - 2
Ohhh awesome a suicide song. Yea I fear I am just not relating to these songs on any sort of level. Screamy, emo, just straight up rock is kind of not for me.
Hummer - 5
This guy seems soooo pretencious to me. But weirdly enough this is prob my favorite of the 3 I’ve heard so far. I like how the end slows down. I do often kind of like a religious commentary song, which this is so I like that aspect of it too.
Rocket - 4.5
“I’ll miss everything I’ll never be” is a bar. Another religious commentary? This one is okay. Very interesting direction and resolve with the guitar at the end.
Disarm - 6
This one is popularrr. I have been disarmed with this acoustic guitar. Anddd now a child abuse song? Fun. This is the most diverse in terms of instrumentals with the bells and strings?? I’m glad that he’s seemingly not falling for the abuse his parents did to him though and the real “gotcha” for his parents being horrible to him, is him being happy and living despite it all. I actually was really touched about how emotional and dynamic that song was. Idk if I’ll have that on repeat by any means, but that was technically my favorite so far.
Soma - 2
A relationship song written through drug-use song now. Awesome. I just am not hard enough to take shit like this seriously lol. I just imagine an emo man going crazyyyy singing along to this and I cannot. DNF’d this - did not enjoy and it was TOO LONG.
Geek USA - 5.5
Guitar kind of goes crazy in the intro. And the guitar continues to go crazy through the chorus. I also like the message that you just kind of need to accept yourself and you’ll find your group and your place. Crazy vibe switch like 2 minutes in. Title name drop!! I think the guitar is undoubtably the best part of this song.
Mayonaise - 4
This one is popularrr too. I wonder if I’ve heard it before and didn’t know. Man people really rideeee for this band and I really find them pretencious asf. He was comparing himself to Picasso for god sake. I can kind of appreciate the artistry here but the reviews of this song calling is genius just seem a touch exaggerated to me. I’m just really not invested here. It’s a fine song.
Spaceboy - 1 (this point is awarded to Corgen’s brother, I’m sure he went through a lot with this dude for family)
Broooooooooo this dude is kind of irritating me now. The SP frontman is comparing his life to his brother (who is pretty significantly disabled) because they are “both freaks of nature and freaks of society” and this song is written with his brother as the inspiration. Whateverrrr dude I don’t feel bad that you’re weird and were probably treated differently because of it.
Silverfuck - 3
Now this title has me intrigued. Yeaaaa I’m bored. Veryyy heavy metal vibe.
Sweet Sweet - 3?
Wow very short. This was fine? Idk seems very forgettable.
Luna - 4
This one is also fine. Sweeter than the other songs on the album.
Wow yea so this band is not for me hahah. I’m sure this goes crazy if alternative rock is your thing though. I liked some of the guitar parts and I think this drummer needs more credit for his work tbh. I just am not invested in Billy Corgan as a person at all and his voice unsettles me, sue me. I listened to the album in it’s entirety though and am very thankful I never have to go see them live, cause that sounds like my nightmare.
Custard Pie - 5.5
Like the descriptions kind of say, very bouncy and full of sexual innuendos. It’s a vibe though. The guitar is obviously pronounced and steals the show
The Rover - 8
These songs are way easier to listen to and have on. Even if I’m not totally locked in on them, they are still a fun listen. The guitar in this one is funkyyyy I love it. I’ll probably add this one tbh. This is a good vibe. Talking about roving around to find this great lover that maybe isn’t always so good, but he can’t help it.
In My Time of Dying - 7.5
11 minutes Not loving that off rip before I even listen to it. So this one is kind of a cover? Bob Dylan and Willie Johnson have recorded this before. It has a very gospel feel like it probably would have had in 1927 (Johnson). I like the way these guys play their instruments. Even if the vocal isn’t something I typically follow along with, this guitar and bassline is insane. Yea you can tell they just had fun and went crazy on this one. Is a good song, I will prob not relisten too too much. I just can’t invest for thissss long of a song. The outro is kind of going crazy though. I like all of the changes within the 11 minutes to keep it somewhat fresh. Is he “dying” at the end here, kind of feel like he is lol. I want to listen to the Dylan version now cause ik it’s going to sound sooo different. “cough” HAHAHAH.
Houses of the Holy - 8.5
I like the rhythm in this one. I’ll prob add this one too. Houses of the Holy being their shows and how their music can make other people feel. Solid song with a solid vibe. I like.
Trampled Under Foot - 8
Car sex innuendos niceee. It’s SO bluesy though which I like. It’s nothing too complex or hard to grasp. The verses are filled with innuendos then the refrain switches to “talking about love” explicitly telling us what he’s talking about. The keyssss on this one. Funky and bluesy and great.
Kashmir - 6.5
Something is sounding super familiar with these strings in the beginning. This one is POPULAR popular though so maybe I’ve heard it. The horns sound super powerful. I see why it’s popular, its just long asf.
In the Light - 7
This synth kind of sounds like a bagpipe (complimentary), what a funky sounding instrumental. I feel like they are WAY more experimental than I gave them credit for, and it all mostly works? Like they aren’t just farting around, they have a pulse on what is going to sound and portray their vibe well. Idk I feel the pull to relisten to this again, but it may be a grower for me. I like the last chord progression to that high note. Catchy.
Bron-Yr-Aur - instrumental
It’s so soft and gentle and acoustic?? I fuck with that contrast. Has a very emotional melody too, like there is something there
By the Seaside - 7
This also has a gospel feel?? Maybe it’s just the keys. I like how different this is from the front half of the album. Like we were going crazy in the front half and now we’re relaxing. It’s full of imagery and has a chill vibe. I like.
Ten Years Gone - 7.5
This one is good too. About juggling dreams and relationships and if you have to sacrifice one to have the other. It seems like he left this relationship to chase his dreams cause he’s remembering how things were, but he had to do it I guess as he says he been gone for ten years now and he might’ve seen her for the first time in awhile.
Night Flight - 6
A Vietnam war song. The bridge slaps. Kind of forgettable in this lineup of songs, but is no way a bad song.
The Wanton Song - 7
Fire riff and guitar hook (of course). Yea that one was good.
Boogie with Stu - 8
Who is Stu? Okay blues. Like this is was I mean about them being experimental in a way I was not familiar with. Playing on an out-of-tine piano? I love the vibe. I love how different this is from what you would typically associate with LD. This one is on the lower rated side of this album, but I fuck with it and am prob going to add it to the playlist hehe. Way to go Stu
Black Country Woman - 6.5
Love the backbeat and meaty rhythm here with that bluesy flare. I’m kind of confused about the title. I like how the last line of each verse comes back with this bite to it. Harmonica soloooo yes. Solid percussion in this track, more pronounced than I’ve noticed in other songs.
Sick Again - 7
Ahh life of a groupie. I wonder what it was like to be a groupie in the 70s and 80s cause it had to have been a TIME. Maybe not as hard hitting or powerful as the other tracks, but this is still a great song. I don’t think I disliked a single on this album.
I like how I got to know more about this band and there is an easy to follow through-line. A great introduction in LD in my opinion as this fully subverts my initial thoughts about them. They are experimental in such a smart way. They sound great and take perfect risks. This album makes me want to listen to it again as well as explore other LD, I can feel some tracks growing me for sure. There is so much character and story with intentionality with this band and I heavily fuck with it. This has easily been the best surprise of this whole thing so far. I still hate that the one song was 11 minutes long as that was insane.
Hmmmm I’m very skeptical. This is kind of outside what I would consider my taste or anything I’d even listen to. But ig that’s the point. Idk if I’m going to like any of these but hey we’ll give her a shot. Seems a little uppity and out there for my taste butttt maybe I’ll end up liking it.
Hidden Place - 2
I think she invented cursive singing. The song is about a relationship and the bond you have in that. Okay to me, I’m not understanding the choices she’s making regarding the music. Her voice and the production kind of don’t match.
Cocoon - 1
Ohhh this one is weird. The first verse immediately being about sex. The background instrumental is like a Lofi beat. I kind like that. Just her voice off puts me. Not dissimilar to how I felt about the Smashing Pumpkins guy. It just is not easy to listen to. I don’t like that it doesn’t follow a rhyme scheme, it has no discernable rhythm, and the breathy thing at the end. Who likes this bro. It’s a sweet message I guess but it’s really not for me.
It’s Not Up to You - 3
A message about being perfect and having control and leaning into what comes. I just don’t like that the backing sounds and the vocals do not match. Like she’s not singing to the beat she’s producing, I don’t understand that. She did come onto the chorus on a beat though, which was probably the most redeeming part of this song. Pretty strings in the back.
Undo -
Yeaaa this album sucks = DNF
Bruh. Another Rolling Stones. Is it too much for a girl to ask for a little a variety? Jesus Christ. I do feel like I know them a little better now, but what’re the odds bro come on.
Rocks Off - 7
Spoiler alert, the Rolling Stones are on drugs — a lot. I feel like this is a song about the high roller druggie rock n roll life. Weirddd vocal effect in the bridge, I do like how it resolves though.
Rip This Joint - 6
This one has like a 20s swing and southern vibe to it. I can see this one being so fun to hear live. Mick Jagger is def moreso yelling at me in this one. It’s upbeat and fast and very rock n roll.
Shake Your Hips - 6
Holy nasal in “…shake, babe”, but this is a cover I guess. It’s good. It doesn’t have a ton of dynamic to go anywhere
Casino Boogie - 6
They literally said they wrote it by picking lyrics out of a hat. I like the sax, feels very bluesy and adds a flavor to the song. Yea it was a vibe, kind of filler song energy but was still good.
Tumbling Dice - 9
Gospel?? This vibe is of my favorite types of Stones songs. Driving beat and rich melody moving the song forward, very bluesy and soulful but matches the guitar riffing. This is a good one. Adding this. A classic on this album for a reason.
Sweet Virginia - 7.5
Harmonicaaaa yes and acoustic out the gate. Very country feeling with the chord progression. God is this stupid project going to turn me into a Stones fan. I feel like I went from “hate” to really liking some of their stuff and feeling more comfortable listening to them. You just have to find the good stuff first, know the history and backstories and you can really get into it. Another drug anthem, but it has a blues/country that almost has you rooting for them?? Crazy feeling, but this one is good too. I may have to also add this one.
Torn and Frayed - 8
No intro here. Immediately into it. The songs on this album are significantly easier to listen to compared to say, Beggars Banquet. I love the driving rock and blues energy they have here. This one is about a man who loves music. I’d like to think Mick Jagger is singing this to the younger versions of the band’s members who would have gotten started in this industry for their unrelenting love of music. I think I’m going to add this one too.
Sweet Black Angel - 4
Okay respect the Rolling Stones’ polical stance here however, idk if this is my favorite — feels a little appropriation-y and idk if this the group who should be singing about this particular issue.
Loving Cup - 6.5
Okay the Genius background for this track is a little biased toward the Stones hahah, but I do think this is a good song. It has a very “we’re all friends at the bar vibe” in a way that supports human connection and love. It also likens a relationship to a good night out drinking (“what a beautiful buzz” to see a person’s face and to feel them kissing him). An extra half point awarded for the use of horns in this song.
Happy - 6
Keith Richards track? Ok king. He talks about how there is all these things that someone “should” be doing (i.e. working for the man, not taking candy from strangers, saving money) and he isn’t doing any of these because he wants his love to keep him happy rather than doing the conventional things. A little simple and has the vibe of a filler song, but good.
Turd On The Run - 4.5
Insane title. What in the world are these lyrics and how does it even remotely connect to this title. It has a very southern vibe to it. Very short, kind of repetitive, and doesn’t really make sense to me, but maybe I’m missing something.
Ventilator Blues - 7
I would also have the blues if I were on a ventilator. This one is unique to me. Basically saying that everybody is going to die, and to make that process better you may consider being a good person to reflect well on your life in the end. A very “Man in the Mirror” moment at the end too where they’re asking are you going to fight that? If so, what’re you gonna do about it.
I Just Want to See His Face - 4.5
I feel like I just started coming into consciousness with this one. Little gospel-y. The song bio talks about this being more of a jam session with a couple other musicians and Jagger came up with the lyrics then and there. Very religious message here calling out some hypocrisy in religion. Saying that people don’t often want to walk and talk like Jesus did, they only want to “see His face” and have a very surface level relationship with religion (to presumably use it against people or for their own gain). Also noticing that in the verses they are accusing others of doing this (“You just want to see his face”), but the title is named “I Just Want…” soooo interesting, is this a callout to himself? Kind of odd as a song in this album, I’m not quite sure how it fits. But I think it calls on the musical ability of this band to a very stripped down (jam seshy) level. Similar to an acoustic feel.
Let It Loose - 6
I guess the main character in this song is entering in a relationship that he’s not really invested in. He’s just kind of there. It’s actually kind of draining him, but its become a crutch of sorts. HORNS again, that is how RS is going to keep me invested in their music tbh, how many great horn sections can they include. The end of the song is that relationship ending and him needing to end it for his well being.
All Down the Line - 8
This one is fun. I like the fast-paced and upbeat tempo. This is the only one I’ve added in the back-half of the album. THis style of Stones song is my favorite, like the pure rock with some blues and even jazzy elements.
Stop Breaking Down - 6
You and me both Rolling Stones. What is this instrument off the bat. This is the other cover song on this album. It’s good.
Shine a Light - 6.5 maybe 7
Aw this one is another song about drugs, but about the drug use of Brian Jones and how it really effected him up until his death and this song could kind of be “I wish you the best” and also a memorial song for him as he passed just before this albums release. What this song in a movie? It sounds kind of familiar.
Soul Survivor - 7
I like the play on words here. This is a super fun closer to a rock and blues album. It’s gonna be the death of me and the song is titled “soul survivor” yeaaaa super fun.
Good album, I’m def seeing the progression and fame level rise here from the considerable bump in quality and lyrics. Idk if I’m getting stolkholm syndrome or something because I fear I’m becoming a Stones fan. Smh.
Little Fury Things - 2.5
The screaming makes me really hate it. Almost turned it off. Hated the beginning with the screaming BUT then the rest of the song was a totally fine rock song. It circled back to the noise at the end which I do not enjoy.
Kracked - 3 (maybe 4)
Hate the just noise guitar part. I would prefer a more detailed instrumental imo. It’s not a terrible song though, oddly enough I like the lead singers vocals the best out of anything. It reminds of a Daughtry tone. The instrumentals just are not my fav.
Sludgefest - 3.5
Crazy transitions into this one, very seamless. And the instrumentals are the best in this song so far. Lyrics are a little on the simple side but I think this one is the best in overall composition so far. HATING the music at the end. Seriously takes the number rating down a little for me.
The Lung - 3
Best intro instrumental where its not just noise. Very simple in terms of lyrics and the instrumentals are fine. Overall kind of mid to me, reading very filler.
Raisans - 4
Wtf is this word. Idk what this moan-singing bridge is. This one is giving a man who won’t let it go (derogatory) like its seeming he likes a girl and she really isn’t giving him the time of day and he’s just kind of staying around hoping proximity or whatever is going to change his mind. Sounds pretty good though. Stylistically, this is one of the best in my opinion.
Tarpit - 2.5
Bass is good in that intro. I liked hearing a deeper tone versus the homogenized noise. This one sounds different from the rest of the songs so far in a good way. I kind of like this one in a “I want to add it way”, I like how it has that rock vibe but isn’t overwhelming and conveys seemingly genuine emotions. The instrumental part 3 minutes in is losing me though - I see no reason for shit like that. Will not be adding now. I HATE THIS guitar? Noise? idk but it seriously is tanking the song for me.
In A Jar - 3
Immediate vibe shift from the last song versus all of the transitions we’ve had so far. THis one was meh, kinda forgettable.
Lose - 2
this one is giving male complainerrrrr. Don’t love it.
Poledo - 2
Very different prodution than the others. Almost scary? I don’t like it.
Just Like Heaven - 3
This one is a cover? Interesting. This one sounds the most like mainstream rock but of course we cannot do without the screaming in the bridge. I like the writing in the verses (but it’s a The Cure song so idk if I can really give this band credit for that). Very ubrupt ending.
Ok I will say this was better than I was expecting. I thought it was going to be the men screaming at me for the entire songs. But it had a little bit more depth to it than that and I actually found myself liking the lead singers vocals more than I thought. I liked the transitions in between songs and some of the pure guitar instrumentals were solid. I even enjoyed some of the writing when I could tell effort was put towards it. They lost me on the noise music of it all and it got screamy in some parts which I just musically do not get at all. Still prob is going to be a 1 star rating for me as I don’t see myself coming back to any of these, BUT I didn’t even think I’d finish this one, let alone find positive things to say. So all is not lost.
I like the album as a concept piece and as an overall work of artistic expression. Relistenability and straightforwardness was a little wonky, but I think it was a cool idea with interesting sonic elements.

Backlogged here. Read note for full analysis.
Classic disco vibe with one of the most famous songs ever (We Are Family) and for good reason. A solid listen.
Very edgy, I like the raw guitar that you can hear throughout the tracks. It sounds like something that would accompany a Gilmore Girls episode or on the 10 Things I Hate About You movie. I added a couple songs and can appreciate the authentic experience being conveyed
