How Beatles of them? But significantly less good. Only 2 listenable tracks on the album for me: What Goes On (which I enjoy) and After Hours. Murder Mystery Party had potential but quickly felt like “more of the same” and I lost interest.
Holy man wails, batman. I can appreciate a good man wail but wouldn’t typically listen to a whole album of it. The hits are great of course, although I realized I only really like the chorus of “It’s The End Of The World As We Know It.” My favorite song on the album is easily “The One I Love.” The beginning of “Lightnin’ Hopkins” felt like a skim milk version of The One I Love.
This album was an intriguing listen! I really enjoyed the brooding and intense, but overall clean sound and balance of the band. The vocals had what I’d call a “searing” quality or tone that I’m a big fan of! Turns out I’m a sucker for British bands with a goth sound and dark lyrical content. 🤷♀️
Diving into stand-out songs, of course Spellbound and Into the Light great, but the songs that really had my attention were Arabian Nights, Halloween, Night Shift, and Sin In My Heart. Arabian Nights and Sin In My Heart will be repeat listens for me and Halloween is going on my playlist for October! I was disturbed by the lyrics of Night Shift so I looked further into it, and it sets the tone of the Yorkshire Ripper’s reign of terror in the late 70s. I’m a “Crime Junkie” and “Murderino” so hearing a song depict the effects of an infamous serial killer earns bonus points for me!
A lot of this album sounded like it was going to be fun, interesting, and funky, but proceeded to let me down a little. Most of the songs felt like watered-down Billy Joel to me. Ironically, I really liked “East St. Louis Toodle-Oo,” which is arguably the least Steely-Dan sounding song on the album. I also enjoyed Charlie Freak, but the rest didn’t leave a strong impression on me.
The only song that hooked me was the title track. I was enjoying listening to it until I got to about the 5 minute mark and realized there was much more song to go.
I really wanted to like this album, but as soon as the vocalist opens his mouth, I can’t stand it. The rest of the band is great but the vocalist sounds like a drunkard with chronic diarrhea. The only tolerable song to me was Metropolis, and I don’t know if I actually enjoyed the song itself or just the reprieve from the singer.
I really enjoyed this album! Standout songs were Witch Hunt, Tom Sawyer, YYZ, and Limelight. Classic rock is not typically my genre of choice but this album had me rocking out.
My ears are bleeding. I suddenly have a newfound appreciation for The Velvet Underground.
This is probably an album I’d like more if I knew the film it came for. It was pretty solid background music at work though!
I enjoyed this album. I especially liked Heaven and Hell and Tattoo. I don’t tend to listen to tracks from live performances if there’s a studio version and I probably won’t revisit the rest of the songs, hence the 3 rating, but it was nice to have in the background.
Great album! 4 stars specifically for Superstition!!
Eh, not my favorite of Leonard Cohen’s.
Songs were too long, and a just a lot of soft noise
Great album! I was rocking out while taking my mandatory corporate compliance courses. Of course, Sweet Child O’ Mine and Paradise City were favorites, but I also really enjoyed Nightrain and My Michelle.
Solid balance and instrumentation. I liked Bigmouth Strikes Again the most, followed by The Boy with the Thorn in His Side!
I HATE to have to give a country album a good rating, but unfortunately, Grievous Angel gives you everything you could want out of a country album. Great vocals and instrumentation, charming duets, songs that will have you out of your seat and dancing, a nice ballad. It’s a shame Gram Parsons didn’t live to see the release of this album.
This was, le bad. I had hope in the first track but it quickly went downhill. The style of Eau d’bedroom Dancing reminded me vaguely of Alvvays, but not enough for me to want to like or add the song to any of my playlists.
Faves were Imagine (of course), Oh My Love, and How Do You Sleep? Everything else was meh.
What a great album! California Dreamin’ was my favorite, of course, followed by Monday, Monday, I Call Your Name, Go Where You Wanna Go, and Straight Shooter! While I didn’t “save” (like) the rest of the songs, they were still a fun listen, so I’d consider this to be a very solid album.
I enjoyed the smooth jazz and r&b in this album, and particularly enjoyed Ruby Baby, Green Flower Street, and Maxine! Funny enough, I think I prefer Donald Fagen’s solo work to the music of Steely Dan!
This didn’t actively annoy me, but also didn’t do anything for me.
I was very impressed by this album! I’m giving it a 5 because I didn’t dislike a single song. I love the singing, balance, instrumentation, and style. This reminds me a lot of Michael Jackson, but not a dollar tree imitation- this album was created with great quality! My favorite song on the album is Who’s Loving You and I really enjoy the penultimate song and how gritty and earthy it is. I also enjoyed If You Let Me Stay, Wishing Well, I’ll Never Turn My Back On You, Seven More Days, and Let’s Go Forward. I like how nostalgic the album is with sampling of Wade in the Water and nods to Return of Mack and the Rain, Rain Go Away rhyme.
Upon my first listen, I thought I wasn’t into this album, but now that I’ve relistened, it seems I just wasn’t in the mood that day. I listened today while working out and actually appreciated a few of the songs more, like Violet, Jennifer’s Body, Doll Parts, Softer, Softest, and I Think That I Would Die. The messaging in I Think That I Would Die is painful having read more about Courtney Love, her marriage to Kurt Cobain, his addiction to heroin and their battle for custody after Love was accused of shooting heroin while pregnant. Speaking of Kurt Cobain, I can definitely hear some Nirvana adjacent chord progressions and her speaking voice reminded me faintly of Gwen Stefani, both of which I enjoyed.
I do enjoy Son of a Preacher Man, but the rest of the album was meh.
10/10 no notes. Fabulous album to listen to while working. Minus 1 star for making me crave Olive Garden breadsticks and an evening at Jazz TX because I can’t do those things all the time.
This was actually terrible. And I don’t say that lightly. His voice sounds like the Tasmanian Devil from Looney Tunes trying to sing (and failing). I had to skip every song because I CANNOT with his voice. Can’t even speak to the rest of the band because his voice distracted from anything good.
Pretty good! Faves were Supervixen and ofc, Only Happy When It Rains!
I know this album’s a classic but the only song I cared about was “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” 🫣😅
